Any electrical gu-ru's out there?
65stangy replied to 65stangy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This post is only serving to make me feel like a complete idiot!! Someone had indeed reversed the headlight plugs so that high beam was plugged to low and vice versa...I plugged the proper 3 conductor plug to the three prong lamp and like magic everything functions properly. Glad I didn't dump a hundred plus on an un-needed switch. Thanks so much TomRhere and everyone else... -

From what you say, something may be goofy, or I am wrong on my statement of which lights illuminate in which position. I am wondering if someone has switched the lamp connections, and/or put incorrect lamps in the wrong positions. I will dig into it this afternoon and see if there is something obvious at the lamps themselves. I really appreciate your description above as well as the clear description of wire colors. -

I am not sure I understand you. The inner two come on right now with the light switch, The outer two will come on when I switch it to high beam, but then the inner two go out. I know all 4 lamps are functioning, just can't get them to all 4 come on at once. I had not considered perhaps a problem in the dimmer switch, or related harness. Hopefully my FSM will shed some light when it shows up (Huge pun intended) -

I really need to learn to check the simple things first....There indeed was a blown fuse, but that fuse states it is for hazards, horn and clock. my horn functioned, as well as the clock, but the clock does revert to 1 O'clock every time that I shut the car off and re-start it the next day...maybe it will hold its memory now. The hazards indeed do work now. I am still stumped on the head light issue, and am considering just biting the bullet and spending a hundred and twenty bucks on a new switch....Don't understand why that thing is so expensive! -

Thanks for all the tips. I will dig into it some this weekend. This is my first subaru, so was not aware of a couple of those things. I am glad the headlights working only with the ignition on IS normal, and I agree that is a nice feature and maybe even ahead of its time. The dimmer seems to work fine on the dash lights, it does not appear that there is a switch for the dome light on the dash light dimmer dial? I had thought about attempting to just replace the headlight switch to see if it corrected being able to get all 4 lights to go at once, but its kind of an expensive switch for a gamble. -
I have a few gremlins that I believe could all be related on my 86 brat, but may just be a bunch of isolated problems: Headlights will not come on all 4 at once...will switch from inside lamps to outside lamps with the dimmer. Headlights also will only come on if the ignition is on...Is this normal? Hazard lights do not function at all, all turn signals are fine Dome light appears dim? As a side note, the factory radio was hacked out of the dash and all of the harness was cut to install an aftermarket. I managed to find a subaru manual for the factory radio and re-made proper connections to an original radio, and it seems to functioning fine, but I did see that there was a ground connection on the chassis of the radio that I did not have anything to ground it to. (but could run one). I do have a FSM on the way to me, and I am hoping that some electrical schematics may assist me once I have a starting point. I know that often times one bad ground can affect a number of different things, but the only obvious wiring tampering appears to have been the radio harness. Any ideas or guidance guys??

1986 brat (stupid?) question...

Hey 86bratman, I know life gets busy, but I could really use those mounting brackets if you are still willing to hook me up... -

Sending you a private message now that the site is back up... -
Hi again, I am putting together my jump seats one piece at a time, and have picked up the head rests and rails. It appears there is supposed to be a couple of plastic guide bushings that slide along with the head rests up and down the rails and keeps them from flopping around. It appears it might be fairly easy to replicate something that would work, but was wondering if anyone has a source for some, or maybe a part number in case they may still be available as new.

Okay, Thanks. I am headed out of town in the morning and will be back on Sunday. -
I found a copied manual for the Matsushita on ebay...The schematic that popped up on the clarion RF-4881 did not seem to match the wires on my radio. I will keep looking, and might go ahead and order the copied manual. If I learn anything exciting I will post it on here.
-
ummm... so I can now get both radio's to power up by applying 12 volts through the blue wire. Certainly not what I was expecting. The radios are two different models, one is a Matsushita model 786201560 ref # CR-KF121A The other is the one that was with the car and is a Clarion model no. RF-4881 I will google both of those and see if I can get a schematic to pop up.

I just got word from someone who is sending me some head rest rails, but no mounting brackets. If you have already pulled the ones from the junk yard, I will still take them, but if not, you could leave them for someone else. -
Thank you DaveT, and Bantum. I will see what I can trace out and verify. Both radios have the same blue wire with bullet connector, but one of them is fused, so your idea makes sense Bantum. I did attempt to get the radio to power up with 12 volts and a ground, and was not successful. My radio could be junk, but will keep playing.

The brat is an 86, I was hoping it would be more obvious when I started digging in, but it became more complicated when there was another radio in the bezel I purchased that also looks factory, and has all together different color combos....I am sure it must have been from a different year. I have today off, so I think I will spend some time with a test light and ohm meter and start tracing the vehicle harness for a start. There is no guarantee that this radio even functions, but I am hoping that because it was saved it might be good, I just wish they hadn't cut the plugs off.
-
Okay, I am probably posting entirely too much as a subie newbie, but...so when I bought my brat, the original radio was behind the seat, and I had a gaping hole in my radio bezel from someone hacking an aftermarket stereo into it. The harness of course has been cut, as well as the wires on the back of the radio. Can anyone help me identify the wire colors that I need to re-connect to splice the factory am/fm back in now that I have a replacement radio bezel? I will attempt to post pictures of my radio. I think the round cord plug might be for an accessory cassette deck?? Thanks in advance

great emblem! just what i need. How much would you like for it? Or we can wait to see what you come up with at the junk yard and settle up a fair price for all. Thanks so much for your help, I will have to pay it forward. -

I need the lower left brat 4wd emblem (sounds like you have one). I supposedly have a pair of seats and a frame from a guy near me. I also have a pair of head rests, but no correct rails to put them on. Yeah, the bumper guards seem to be scarce. I really appreciate your help. -

Great info. Thanks! If you would be willing to do that, I would be very much appreciative. No guesswork if they come off of a generation 2. I will pay you any costs and for your time of course. If you happen to spot a rear bumper guard, and a tail gate emblem, those two pieces have been eluding my recent searches as well. Have a great day! -

Good idea, I suppose the mounts from any brat generation 1 or 2 would work. I know of a 78 that is at a local wrecking yard, I will see what he will charge me for the mounts. Thank you! -

I noticed that they were not in the same location, and that they do not extend as deep in the bed as head rest rails. I was considering finding some of the wider rails and figuring out a way to use the existing attachment points to mount them. Maybe welding a couple of tabs onto them so I can off set them to match the correct location above the seats. Have you seen anyone try this? -
So, I know the rear jump seats were not available in the 86 model year (I still want to add them), so what were the narrow vertical rails mounted over the back window for if not for head rests?

EGR light is on constantly

SUCCESS!! A picture is worth a thousand words. More of a pain than anticipated given the lack of slack provided in the wires, but made it. Thanks so much everyone! -
