  1. Probably as long as you want..but from what I've heard it's not worth it it's not going to save you anything on gas mileage so it's better to have it in
  2. Thank you so much. Yes I know all about the torque converter. I'm just afraid if I jostle the transmission while putting it in, it'll come unseated. I plan to push and turn and push and turn until that thing is seated full, I have already learned a hard less on this with an 01 outback I had. As for the cross memeber I'll just use a good heavy 1/2 in socket with long ratchet and creep it out. A little out and a little in back and forth with the blaster or kroil oil.
  3. I have decided I will be removing my transmission, probably within the next six months and I'd like to tackle this task from the bottom so is there any major things I want to look out for taking on this task from the bottom? Should I unbolt the engine will I need to tilt that or anything, or, Will there be any problems with the big bolts that anchor the transmission to the body are they known to strip or have a hard time coming out? Thanks, keep me posted Subaru family.
  4. Nope didn't fix it, but slightly noticeable difference with the redline heavy shockproof
  5. Likewise, but I would definitely use the product in a good differential, and the slight improvement is a clear diagnosis, if the sound wasn't enough already, the front diff is BAD. https://youtu.be/KUoE_tAFxyE
  6. Well like Rex told Andy, "hope is a dangerous word". But you know, I don't care. I bought some Redline heavy shockproof and I want to see what it does, and there is this, a trip to the Flemish cap if you will.... I won't spend $48.00 on a 12oz bottle, but I'd like to know of anyone who has tried it.. See link. I do plan on a video after I put the Redline in. One way or another.
  7. Well here is a vid of the noise, I'm hoping it will quiet this.. https://youtu.be/mvgfsWPXER0 Here is a video I found with a sound very similar to mine, although mine is not nearly as bad as this. And I don't get any noise when I'm off the gas other than that we have a very very similar sound here.
  8. Sounds like a path to he11! What did you pay? Subaru's are just cool. I wouldn't mind owning a 90s sub, I still think they have a great almost Porsche like interior design, I never get tired of seeing them in the junkyards around. I also drive and own a 99 Camry. Its on standby if the 2003 LL BeanOutback I drive dies.
  9. As some of you know who read my posts on here, I have had a front howl/buzz, which reverberates through my automatic gear selector a bit, from what is presumed to be the front differential, since I bought the car some months ago. The noise is only persistent on acceleration after 30mph, immediately goes away when you let off the gas. Has not gotten any worse in 3k miles or so now. I've added Lucas 75w 110 to the front, but no change in the noise. As a last shotgun hail Mary I'm going drain a court and dump a quart of Redline heavy shockproof gear oil in there. Anyone ever try this stuff?? I'm not sure of its compatibility with my diff, but I'm willing to chance it. It's supposed to flow like 75w90 and have the thickness properties of 75w250. If I have any success I'll post a YouTube of the reduction of noise. Maybe it will hush some phantom noises I have too... But that's another story...
  10. Sorry I threw this thread up in a hurry. It doesn't do it every time. I'll try to catch a recording on it, I'll quote all of you in a reply to get your attention. Thanks for all the replies, and grossgary, the always complete response with detail and concern, appreciate it.
  11. I've noticed a couple times after I shut off my outback bean and put her in park, there is a sound that vibrates through the whole car and it sounds sort of like a rusty door hinge opening... Does not last bit a few seconds at most, kind of hard to catch. Wonder if this is at all related to my regular differential whine?? Maybe steering rack and pinion....? I'd like to know how to properly drain thesteering fluid and refill with clean fluid...thanks
  12. I did read his thread, it inspired this thread! I drive mine regularly. By the time the transmission fails, I might Just have a good JDM on hand... Not any YouTube videos on the tear down of this transmission. Just starting to learn about preload and backlash, seems complicated for sure. An amazing YouTube video would be to see someone attempt this .. Like the forester guy said, once you lay the two trans side by side and see it for what it is, seems as though somewhat simple, and like you said, just put all the pieces exactly how you found them in the donor..
  13. If I pull the transmission on my 2003 automatic L.L. Bean Subaru outback H6 I'm going to try to rebuild the differential using parts from the junkyard, and while I'm in the junkyard, give myself a course on how to take the differential apart. I turn to the forum to ask what tips if any can anyone give me on rebuilding this particular diff?
  14. Well, the dealer was not much help, so I am embarking on an extensive search to determine what year engines and transmissions are going to be interchangeable with my auto 2003 LL Bean Subaru Outback. Transmissions particularly, since this is what I will be needing soon. What are the key things I should be looking for to match things up right? Does the Long white tag on the trans with numbers and letters tell me anything? I have an H6 motor on standby that worked perfectly in my 2001 VDC H6, will it plug up the same in the Bean? Ebay leads me to more confusion. I see second generation motors and transmissions are advertised separate, for example, 2000 to 2002 and 2003 to 2009 for JDM transmissions and engines. Although they all look quite similar, is there an electronic component that's different or something? I need a pretty good expert to help me sort this confusion out.....
  15. I've been searching high and low on YouTube and Google for any information about a bad axle making the noise I'm hearing in my original differential noise video. You might call that hoping for a miracle . The closest thing I found was a video by Eric the car guy replacing axles on his 97 Subaru Legacy , but all that really corrected was some hesitation, which I don't have... Then I found another interesting video by Eric the car guy where he attempts but fails to correct anything when he adjusts the preload on the same car, and I'm definitely not crazy enough to try that ..not even really sure if that has anything with my problem
  16. I agree, ANY aftermarket axles are junk. That first does not look like a Subaru axle. The rubber on the boot looks old and cracked. I might replace it with a junkyard Subaru one just for the heck of it.
  17. Don't let them do anything to it unless it is free. Try a different computer. It should unbolt from under passenger side rug. Get a used one cheap if you can, ebay or something. If it does not work, resell it, take a small loss, but get a free diagnosis in your computer at least. Or keep it as a spare. 2010 is too new for it to be a starter, I'd think the dealer checked fuses, check if all things electrical are working too, could be a short. Check relays.... Talk to people here on the forum, some are very knowledgeable mechanics. I am not.
  18. Not sure, I'm not the first owner. So much crud I can't tell. How about the play on both sides though?
  19. So the saga continues with the whining noise on acceleration after 30 mph coming somewhere from my transmission, so I got up underneath the car again today and shot a video, and I think I found the culprit. I'm a novice mechanic, so I'm not really sure with a lot of applications what's normal and what's not normal. I gave my axles a good shake today, and I don't think what I found with my car is normal. Some Subarus I have found in the local junkyards don't have any axle play, especially like what's in this video below. The video doesn't show it, but on one side, the gear looking/ toothed load setting adjuster ( or whatever) where the axle plugs into, moves a little when I have the car jacked up and I am turning the front wheels while they are off the ground. My question is, can any of this be fixed without removing the transmission and how long may I get away with this? https://youtu.be/wjw5mhqNBzE
  20. So I'll be grabbing a JDM transmission when the one in my 03 outback bean finally explodes. Hopefully I'll get a year of driving out of it.., I wanted to know, which automatic transmissions will work in this car? Thank you people of the forum! This is my Subaru : https://youtu.be/k6Bt5qKo0hc
