  1. I did initially consider a current gen Impreza with the FB20, but between the oil consumption and reduced power output, I wasn't that interested. I still haven't done a test drive though, so maybe the power thing isn't a big deal. What's your take on the FB oil consumption issue? Is it a money pit?
  2. Thanks for the detailed response. I'll have to look into the details further. I should add that it's not the risk of being stranded that concerns me, it's the greater than zero probability of a very expensive repair. Having advance warning isn't really that helpful (to me) because either way the repair needs to be made, and it's going to cost a buttload. I can immediately resolve the issue, paying by credit card at the small cost of interest, or save up and do the repair a few months after the problem surfaces...either way it significantly reduced the value equation for the vehicle compared to one which never needs an expensive repair like that. But...this is all a moot point if the particular engine isn't even likely to have an issue. Anyways, I appreciate the detailed information and I think I still have more to learn before I can comfortably buy a Subaru with a predictable risk-profile.
  3. One more thing, the 2010's evidently have the bad head gasket. A lot of conflicting info on this issue, but LLC Motorsports paints a pretty dismal picture... Anyone here have a 2010 or similar 2.5 that's made it above 200k with no engine work? How'd you do it? I'd like to ask the stellar the right questions as far as what they've done for maintenance that might head-off the issue. Not going to buy the car if it's likely to have such a serious problem http://www.licmotorsports.com/blog/2014/01/30/dreaded-subaru-head-gasket-issue
  4. Found a 2010 Impreza on Craigslist with 87,000 miles - owner says its in good shape and I have reason to believe them. http://madison.craigslist.org/cto/5703849301.html Assuming it checks out as problem-free, what would be a fair price target? Also, any recommendations for a reputable shop to perform the inspection in Madison, WI? Thanks!
  5. Wow thanks for all the responses! I guess one big attraction is that so many people love their Subarus - that's what I'm looking for. Good to hear that overall they're reliable. Might have some more questions later but just wanted to say thanks the feedback so far!
  6. I'm just starting to research the Outback Sport model after noticing a few out on the roads. I'm looking for a new car in the next few months, and was looking at a Honda Fit initially (which is definitely more cost-effective and would satisfy 90% of my needs) but I'm longing for my old 4Runner. A full-size SUV is out of the question these days but I can see myself in a smaller Subaru. I really like the Outback Sport from what I've seen/read so far; it seems like a good mix of ruggedness and practicality for basic city driving. If you guys can help me out with some questions if really appreciate it! To get the budget question out of the way, I'm comfortable spending $15k and could stretch to $16 or $17k if it's really worth it. Don't care about features but I'll gladly take them of it doesn't heavily increase the cost. Stick or auto, and somewhat picky about the cosmetic condition (no rust or big scratches or dents). Based on this, I think I'm looking at somewhere around a 2009 to 2012 model with between 50 and 100,000 miles. Am I in the ballpark as far as what I can get within my budget? I'll own the car for at least 5 years, maybe a whole lot longer. Besides the head gasket, are there any expensive potential issues? Any problems which can't be detected before purchase? Approaching 100,000 miles, what would need work? what do you guys generally spend per year? Some feedback on this would really help me decide if the Outback Sport is the right. Thanks!
