Swap done ! SVX cv axles, SG A-arms and HotBits coilovers is a great combo ! Did a test on a lift with the wheels dangling, 2nd speed, no vibrations, no noise. And I now have a 2cm larger front track !

Did you find out what makes your motor rough ? O2 sensor ? -

Well, I think so because I had the same symptoms and found out it was a bad signal from the O2 sensor, of course after I had tried the MAP, the coil pack, the spark plugs, etc...! -

Maybe a faulty O2 sensor ? -

Seems that non oem thermostats don't work on Subarus, had cooling issues because of that but all good since I changed it. -
Anyone else in the Subaru offroad comunity tried SVX axles for more angle ?

Some news on the SVX axles...they have the tripod design. The shafts are not compatible with the Forester, Legacy, Impreza. The splines and OD are different, bigger. I brought the outer cv's to a machine shop to take 3mm OD off to suit the Forester's dust and bearing seals. It was impossible to take the shafts apart from the outer cv's. Changed the boots and reassembled the axles then fitted them to the Forester. All seemed to go well but I had an issue...the SVX axles are 1 cm longer compressed than the Foresters and that pushes the tripod against the wall of the inner cv on the last 2cm of the suspension droop. I think that the solution will be to change the SF "A" arms for SG's as they are 1 cm longer. Subarus are Lego's !

Subaru SVX front inner plunging CV's are bigger and take 30° vs 25° for standard Subaru axles. And they were built for a heavier and powerful H6. And the splines are compatible too...

I answered giving the lengths but could've also said "no" ! When I change my front CV axles, I unbolt the control arms from the chassis, 3 bolts (no swaybar) and no need to re do the settings on the strut bolts. -
Found some interesting information. Subaru SVX 3.3 have larger inner CV joints compatible with standard male EJ gearboxes. The outer CV joint is larger too and can be compatible with minor modification using a smaller dust seal on the Forester wheel hub. Another solution is to swap the outer CV joint for a standard Subaru (Forester, Legacy, Impreza...) The SVX inner CV joint can take an angle of approx. 30°+. The only concern is the plunge, 40mm vs 45mm for the standard tripod type but as it is, I think, a ball type, it should be ok (less angle on the cage) Haven't done the test but will report as soon as I have 2 axles, only have one yet...

Heri are 690mm compressed and 740mm extended. NTN (oem) Forester SF are 685mm compressed and 730mm extended I'm just back from the wreckers and found one SVX 3.3 front axle, much larger inner and outer cv's. The inner cv takes about 32°(!) but has less plunge, 695mm compressed and 735mm extended. I looked for '89-'92 legacy front axles to see if they are ball or tripod and measure them but they didn't have any in stock. If anyone has some sitting around, would be great to share the info ! -

No, the longer lateral links are not stronger... Talking of the sliding axles, do you mean the Heri front shafts ? Not sure that using a sliding axle with a plunging CV is compatible, don't think I will ever try and haven't even counted the splines to see if it could fit. Or are you talking of the rear CV axles ? If so, I have the oem '98 Forester SF's with SG lateral links. -

Wow ! Beautiful suspension kit ! Why do you fabricate front control arms, aren't the oem's good enough ? Rear Forester SG lateral links are 15mm longer than Forester SF lateral links. And Impreza WRX are 10mm longer than Forester SF. This may help for more space between strut and body. Thank you very much for the front CV axle measures. I'll go to the wreckers to find some early Legacy/Impreza. -
What will you do next ? No other option on the market...

Seems the job done made a good improvement. How did the suspension work ? Not too harsch on road ? And a little question, could you measure a front OEM Outback CV axle for me (compressed/extended) to compare with my Forester OEM's (because the Heris I have are nearly shot...) -

Did you drill any hole in the housing ? I did that on the Proflex inverted coilovers with a hose and a fuel filter that I later replaced with a bladder (soft container) so there wasn't too much over/under pressure in the housings. -

It will be perfect for rallying ! Have you tried to lubricate the bushings (PTFE) with fork oil ? Made a huge difference for my application. -

Nice custom built struts ! What rate are the springs and how much travel/stroke do you theoricaly get ? Did you fit any seals ? -

jf1sf5 replied to pontoontodd's topic in Off Road
Yes, you need to fit a seal under the upper and the lower plain bearings otherwise the oil will only lubricate the lower plain bearing. High grade fork oil should be better against leaks for your application (no damping) -

I have a monotube standard design (HotBits DT2), not an inverted like yours or the Proflex evo 2 I had before. You probably fit seals above and under the plain bearings to keep them lubricated ? Do you have any drawings of your design ? -

What oil are you going to use for the lubrication between housing and shaft (shock body) ? I have tried different hydraulic oils (LHM, ATF Dexron 3, motor oil, fork oil...) and the one that really works great is Motorex Fork Oil 2,5W (you can mix with higher grades). Have'nt tried other makes though. For the seals, I use PU (polyurethane) because they don't stick like the NBR do (Nitrile). Hope it helps ! -
