yup... I've done me a lots of research on gearing, here and elsewhere! But yeah, thanks for the info... In fact I'm sure I got some of my learning from you along the way! This is exactly where I'm at... Is it worth all that to get less than a tenth of a percent gearing difference... It might be in the long run, but then this might just dedicate my car as NOT the highway/road trip car

My bad:-\ It's just that it's from your neck of the woods, so I thouhgt I'd just come straight to the SubaruAlliance thread

Cool, do you (or anyone) know if the clutch kit spec'd for a 99 OB 2.5 is "stronger" than a clutck kit spec'd for a 99 OB 2.2? The carquest guy said all the part numbers were the same, but the 2.5 was like $40 more..... If the 2.5 IS stronger (for the 30+ more HP), then I'd go for it, but if they're the same and it's a badging scam, then I'll go cheaper @$167... thank chux... BTW, I still need to respond to your last PM, from like a year and a half ago

I just saw this legacy in Moab yesterday... Just wondering if anyone knows the owner. . . If so we should get some coffee before he/she leaves town!! Here's my legacy, I live in Moab!

Right, but all other gears are equal (from the subaru tranny chart which floats around), from my 3.90 FD 1-4 and the 99 OB 4.11 1-4, just the 5th is different... So given those numbers, I'd suspect that with the 5th from my legacy (.780) instead of the 5th in the 99 OB (.871), I'd have a better highway overdrive, with the 4.11s... The chart shows foresters and imprezas (OBS and RSs) have the same 1-5 as my legacy, with OBS having 3.90 and newer RSs with the 4.11s. So I think all else being equal, the taller 5th from my legacy in the OB tranny would be a good setup, combined with the 4.11s... Does that make sense or is there a critical factor I'm missing, which is entirely plausable?

O.K. edit... I have more info now.... either clutch kit would work for my rig, either the 99 OB kit speced for a 2.2 or the 99 OB kit speced for the 2.5 (both are in stock at my local car quest), BUT with identical part numbers (as per the guy looking up hte parts), the one spec'd for the EJ25 is like $40 more... At any rate, i found my bearing inner diameter difference. Apparently the quil (the shroud from the bell housing that the bearing rides on) has been retrofitted with a steel sleeve which changes its diameter from 33mm to 35mm... So I'll just reuse the bearing that came with the tranny and buy the EJ22 spec'ed clutch kit for $161... And i should be good to go... Can verify that the clutch kit spec'd for the EJ25 is in fact stronger than the one spec'd for a 2.2

I've got a 95 legacy with 5MT, 3.90 nFD and am swapping for a 99 OB 5MT with 4.11 FD, BUT it looks like reading other posts, folks don't like the 5th gear in OBs. Looking at the numbers: my 95 leg, foresters, impreza RSs, etc. Most 5MTs run a 7.80 5th gear ratio, but Outbacks have a .871 5th gear ratio. I've read on another forum someon swapped an RS 5MT with 4.11s into his OB to get the batter 5th/overdrive gear. I'm turning 27" tires and the 4.11s should do that better than my 3.90s did, but I'd like to keep a lower RPM in 5th. currently I do like 3K RPMs at 70 MPH (although witht he tires I'm actually turning 75MPH), and my wife's 03 OBS with 3.90 FD does 3K RPMs at 70 MPH too. So it would be nice to keep around 3K RPMs (not 3250 or 3500) at 70 MPH with the 4.11s. SOOOOO, how involved would it be to crack these trannys open to retrieve my legacy's .780 5th gear and put it in this 99 OB 5MT to keep the better overdrive?

So I have a 95 legacy with EJ22 and 5MT, cable-actuated clutch. Great car, lots of posts and pix and and elsewhere, blah blah blah. I lost reverse about 6-7 weeks ago. It started with a weird sort of whining, then sort op rubbing, then BIG BAD thunking! It kerchunks the whole front end and makes the front wheels pop and jiggle whenever I tried to back up. So I don't do that anymore... I got a 99 OB 5MT and rear diff to swap into i0t, A: for reverse and B: (a long-time want) for the 4.11s. I've pulled the rear end and tranny (boy that's fun, since I've never done that before) My rig is cable-driven clutch, the 99OB tranny was behind an EJ25 and was hydraulic-clutch driven. I swapped the clutch cable bracketry from "old" to "new", swapped the shifter stay rod from old to new, swapped the VSS from old to new, swapped the throw-out bearing fork from old to new, and repositioned the pivot ball in the 99 for the cable fork, no problem. The starter mounting bolts in my 95 have a pass-through nut and bolt on top with a stud and nut on the bottom. The 99 starter was held on with 2 pass through bolts, ergo the bottom hole is NOT threaded as it is in my 95 5MT. problem But here's the latest catch, the 99 output shaft is like 55mm for the throw out bearing and the 95's was like 53mm, so I'll have to use the 99 OB bearing.. So, since I have it all apart anyway, and my 2 year old clutch got fried (trying to position a pop-up camper) last year, I need a new clutch anyway. So are my questions. Do i get a clutch kit for a 99 OB with 2.2 or 2.5? Do I need a flywheel for a 2.2 or 2,5? I'll make a thread for this swap too... but until then I'd love some input from the crowd who's put an EJ22 in their 96-99 Outback, or anyone who'se put a gen 1 OB tranny in their gen 2 legacy running an EJ22.

RX Tranny Teardown (and rebuild?) WITH PICS
superu replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good readd, nice thread!! It's an interesting way to get an EJ D/r from USDM stuff... Wagonist, I've been reseaching Aussie dual range AWD gear boxes for a 4 years or so, and am again on a kick to try to get one.. Would you be willing to work with me on this? PM coming. . . -mark- -
Awesomeness!! You going to do the 215-65 16 grabber AT2s on that puppy?
-
Ditto!! ^ ^ ^ I like scrolling through my subscribed list once and a while to rehash old thoughts. Did anything ever come of this gearing wet dream?? Inquiring minds want to know

2500#? That's all?!! Shoot!!

Nice!! I must've missed the bulletin mentioning not to tow (a 1978 Coleman tent trailer) with a 5MT behind a NA 2.2, particularly sans low gears. Thus I melted my 9 month old clutch Ooh and boat ramps aren't the best either But it sure is awesome pulling to the take out in a lifted sedan with rally cross numerology, strapping on the boat and hauling outta there!! but, I digress. . . So, lesson learned... when you melt a clutch and need to replace it, THAT MEANS IT'S TIME TO UPGRADE THE TRANNY TOO!!

nice!! what are the plans for the brighton? waita second... I noticed in the second video, it was said, while rolling a cig. "pull the transmission, through the auto in it and sell it." Just like that, swap an auto for a standard? isn't that a bit of a bear?? Anyhoo, fun videos. It's like, "a day in the life of the Subaru alliance..." style I must say the 'ol trashwagon 10 sure has come together well!! How well did it pull the brighton? exceeding recommended towing capacity and all

Reference transmission code/labe thread: http://ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=111315 can anyone decode this one? It's a JDM/AUDM transmission 6J-TY757XRBAB I'd like to decode this one but don't have enough info from the mentioned thread's info. Perhaps that is a USDM specific thread? thanks for the help.

Good read. I appreciate the original idea, posting a specific wuestion to get a specific answer, but getting many tertiary posts redirecting the question, etc. But on the topic of 2.5-2.2 swaps and not getting running the OB as well as the torque-ier more powerful 2.5, how well or poorly does a 2.2 turn 4.11 gears? i'm curious about how a 2.2 turning 27" tires would do going from 3.90 final to 4.11 final, or even 4.44 final? would it have the power and torque to turn the gears effectively and use gearing to compensate for an upsize tire change? Its a question of lower output 2.2's ability to run the 2.5's gearset. I appologize if people feel this is a diversionary post, but this thread got me thinking of that question. thanks
-
Sorry for the diversion in this thread... There are a few write-ups on 5MT swaps around. With the auto you'll be able to wheel steeper and a bit harder than a manual, but with 200+K, a lower mileage tranny wouldn't be a bad thing. I prefer stick, BUT am limited by its taller gearing, which an auto's torque converter overrides... cheers!
-
28's on oB struts and minimal massaging! Nice squeeze!! Look at post #40 and you'll see we're twinsies Nice work on your sedan! Are you running 5MT or auto? This is my second set of 27x8.5 14's (BFGs first set and general grabbers this newest set).. I know folks sometimes find a mu terrain 27 14"... But i ze... think the cooper ssts are no longer made in that size anyway, I just wanted to chime in and give props on your lift, and props on the project for doing the additional 3" lift too!

+2, and my other questions from a while ago too !! Ooh and will we be seeing you at the rally cross this weekend? It's gunna be mad fun!! later dude!

mudrat in Eugen, OR This one wouldn't fit the first gen legacy, but he'd build you one that would!! http://www.oregonoffroadsubaruclub.org/mudrat_index.html
