How to bring an 80 brat back to life
superu replied to superu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
COOL beta, thanks for the info, kep it coming... The tranny is a D/R standard, both engines are EA71 . the mounted one had probs so the guy baought another running on, then its been sitting for 10 years... -
I might get an '80 brat EA71 for free... What would it take to make it fuel injected, and convert it to CNG? It'd be cool to have an efficient, clean car for around town... thanks for all your beta!!

hmmm, I don't think so.. 95 is when they changed stuff (those pesky engineers).. 95 started the outback, but they got way better for 97-99 and on... I'm sure someone else will pipe up, but i don't know that outback struts (any year) will just bolt up to a 94

OOoohh man!! I'm stoked to see how this turns out!! What'll your final gearing be 1:52? ooooooooooooooo, gotta go now. . . .
-
NICE!! I'm down with the low-cost factory lift of outback struts!! Fit some bigger tires under there too, and get a touch more... I think i'm at 9 at the cat too, and maybe 9.5 at the rear diff?? Are you thinking of higher (after recovering from the strut swap blow $$)? check out this impreza (for inspiration) http://home.att.net/~rsmash/

True that, but burrying the rear in dirt on a level shoulder, when the ground's next to frozen I guess bald tires don't help either. . . . No dice on pulling her out though... she was gone by late morning

Isn't the brighton the same as an L, only w/o the power stuff and cruise? I've got a '95 Legacy L sedan (stick). I did the outback strut swap (+2 inches) and switched for cooper discoverer 205x75 14s (+1 inch), for 9+ inches at the rear diff... body line is at or just above centerline on the wheel... Mudrat will concur with the outcome of this combo

actually the cheapest way with decent sound and factory stuff is do the K&N flat filter replacement, but remove all the intake resonater stuff hidden in the fender well... it'll leave you with the box filter and a large inlet hole sucking air trough the fender NOT the slow-down-and-quiet-the-air deal that's in the fender.. So always on the search for more... I then did a K&N custom size (6 inch base, 7 inches long and 4 inch tip) and a custom fabed mount to keep the sensor... But in hind sight, with factory pipe and muffler, the K&N box filter with the intake resonater removed is fine...

It takes a special kind... yes that is the paint stripe for the shoulder of the road... allbeit it was icy and i can see sliding off the road, but it is a 4x4, c'mon!! Maybe the owner will give it to me when I pull them out with the superu

stock 95 legacy L got 25-28.. i once it got 400+ miles on a tank, BUT.... now with 205x75 14's, intake, 2.25 exhaust, and ouutback strut lift, i get from 19-23... like 200-275 miles on a tank... suky But its got lots of power, sounds and looks good!! hooray

Lights mounted on the bumper
superu replied to LoyaleFan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i think i remmber seeing it too, just don't remember the name to it either.. were'nt the lights black, round and close together?hmmm -
Josh... Its a stick and my daily driver But there might be an 80 brat on the horizon to tootle around town in... my landlord's got one i think he's gunna donate to me.. I just need to find a next-to-free way of getting it running... hmmm... Noah... so is the RX tranny, when center locked effectively a 4x4 (like those silly spitefull trucks), just with not as hip of a low range? is the 1.19 the low range or the 4by gearing for all 4? I'm not too hip with the RX, or most of the subie lingo for that matter.. I'm actually a subie newbie with this legacy... though i've already made a pretty unique one out of it Anyhoo, i'm interested in the dual rnage, but as a student and not rolling in the money.... as you can imagine, already took a mega hit with the stage 2 clutch, outback struts, intake, exhaust and bumper... But it is damn fun!! BTW, are you the josh and noah i emailed pix to?

I put this in the retrofitting string too... So i got a mudrat tube bumper on my 95 legacy this x-mas... Talking to John (and I hope he replies as well as others) what all would it take to convert my 95 legacy L 2.2 liter, AWD to 4x4 with low range. I'm not super familiar with all the ea (older engines, gen 1 and 2?), ej (newer enjines, 2, 2.2, and 2.5 liter?), lingo of subaru-dom, but i'm learning... I assume this conversion would make it a Front drive when not in 4 wheel drive... John, i know we spoke briefly and you can do it, but when you were running over it with me at 11.30 PM, it was going in one ear and out the other... I understand my AWD is controlled by the tranny, so to get low range i'd need another tranny (i think you said from a late 80's car), and some adapter plate for old tranny to new engine. Could i keep my stage 2 cluth (since i spent a fortune on it Has anyone else done this duel range conversion on a 95+ roo? Do ya have pix? (working on adding the evolution of my project superu to the site... i've got some stock ones up now with more coming...) Lemme know, ooh great wealth of surabu wisdom here in!

John, i know we spoke briefly and you can do it, but when you were running over it with me at 11/30 PM, you were kinda speaking a little french to me... and here's more... Not sure of the roo lingo, i'm assuming OBS is outback sport? if so, check out this site http://home.att.net/~rsmash/

i have a high final drive (i think i had 3.9:1), so i didn't end up losing as much as i thougt i might... send an email and i'll send pix...

Yea you need to do the 4-wheel allignment when your done, the height changes angles... My speed's only about 4-5 MPH off. It reads slower now... I lost some power from 5th , especially on hills, but then with the intake and exhaust, it cruises around town like stock tires, or a little faster... I lost some top-end but that's okay since i need to slow down some anyway... -mark-

I swappwd my stock struts for 97-99 outback struts and got about 2 inches of lift. It was an unbolt and bol-on deal, now i'm running 205x75's on my stock 14's, which gave me another inch.. now my 95 legacy is about 9-9.5 inches to the rear diff, and with a mudrat bumper lookin' bad-o!! WELL WORTH IT!!!
-
Andrew, I've had my 95 legacy for a year, and have now tweeked it (which i'm sure will shorten its life)... i've done the outback strut swap, added 275x75 14 all terrains, done the K&N intake and a cat-back exhaust through 2.25" pipe and a magnaflow muffler, plus a spec stage 2 clutch... This december i got a mudrat tube bumper made (check the image gallery for one on a baja) It looks and sounds super-sweet, but i know the way bigger heavier tires will wear on the engine... I've got an oportunity for an 80 brat (with a sopposedly rebuilt engine) from my landlord... Kinda thinking of (as cheaply as possible) getting the brat running and using that as my daily, round town car and use the legacy for road trips and such... What's your 2 cents there? I've already put in a bunch of money (that of corse i didn't have) in the legacy (so i'd rather not undo all that), but i understand making the brat an off-roader would probly be the better idea... so i'm kinda stuck... opinions anyone??

I've got a 95 legacy L that i swapped for 97-99 outback struts.. its a simple pull 'em of and bolt 'em on deal, instant 2-inch factory lift... it made my stock 185 14s look super-lame!! I was able to easliy fit 205x75 14s in the wheel well on the stock rim, which added another inch... so now my legacy's about 9.5 inches to the rear diff... have fun!
