then we added Suby sliders straightened the pinch weld, scuffed the paint to bare steel every 13" for 1.5" then welded 1" angle iron against the pinch weld, inside and out. Then hammered the weld back against the angle iron and welded it down. Next to wire-wheel it , prime and bedliner it. Maybe silicone b/t he welds then cover it up with liner

At the top of Lockhart Basin trail in Moab... more to come

If they're like the RXs (and folks chime in if I'm wrong) then they're open center diff with a push-button locking center diff option. Locking the center diff makes it 4x4 vs. open center diff AWD. then with locked center and Low range you have a dual range push button 4WD.

YES YES Bennie, it is awesome (eventually I'll get around to updating stuff on offroadsubaru and ausubaru too !! It was quite a trial of patience and trust, but it all worked out in the end and I think everyone is happy! I don't remember actual timing, but maybe 6 weeks or so. Mostly b/c it stalled out in Singapore for more paperwork and it took weeks to get Taza, myself and the shipping coordinator to communicate together and figure it all out. And that was all months AFTER he said he'd dropped it off originally. . . . .there's another story. But it took me 3 hours (solo) to pull and strip the old tansmission then my friend helped me just stuff the dualer in the car, then the next day I buttoned everything up solo again. So maybe 6 hours or so... I still think i need to adjust the clutch (yeah it's still on cable clutch). Taza sent all the gear to swap it into a hydro clutch which I hope to do eventually, but after all the trials and tribulations I just wanted it IN the car so I could drive it!! But year, it's pretty sweet! the hill I'm rallying down in this video ( ) I was able to just idle UP in lo range. In fact I could've gotten OUT of the car, walked alongside steering it and it wouldn't have stalled climbing this hill at idle!! Its a gen 1 forester. So 4.11 axle ratio and 1.44:1 low. Straight swap with a decent low range. I know about the GL low swap (and crown wheel grinding) but just wanted no-hastle awesomeness! Right now I have a 20.5 crawl ratio in first gear, low range with 4.11 axle ratio. Not too shabby for a car!!

This was a gen 1 Forester (per Tarran, it is from a 98 Forester with approx 124K miles) dual range, so yes, straight swap even a 4-bolt main (like my 95 leggo's stock 5MT was) I researched and researchd for YEARS, then committed to getting one and emailed and forumed to see if someone down under would be willing to do the leg work, then found some who was, then it was an exercise in patience and effort for all involved to get it over here. AND it all worked out!

Sooo, long story short (reviving a WAAAY old thread, from waay before I knew much about roos I have a DR Ej 5MT now!! :headbang::headbang::headbang:

HOLA JesZEK!! You should do some more research on the LADM imprezas. It is possible they have 1.59:1 low gear. Those wew in Australia BUT very hard to find. That low gear is the same gear reduction as EA82 GL wagons and is very good. It will probably be in a 3.90 final drive 5-speed, BUT that's still almost 22:1 crawl ratio with a 3.90 axle ratio. if you swapped a 4.11 crown wheel into an impreza with 1.59:1 low (with monor grinding to the crown wheel), you'd have 23:1 crawl ratio in a full time AWD EJ -powered 5 -speed!! THAT would be very nice!!!! My brother-in-law says he might look into the Honduaran Subarus and see about trying to get cars or parts (if so it would be a LOT easier, faster and cheaper than how Imported my trans from Australia) At any rate, see if you can get more information on dual range EJ imprezas from the LADM! Thanks, and great posts!!

Turns out the black steelies look even better than the aftermarkets... i thought they wouldn't but they do. I'm not sure exactly what, something like just plain, solid, durable, but a little sleek b/c of the form of the holes... anyhoo, I like the steelies! And yes, ROWL out all the time!!! black out is sooo, "car" :-p You should swap that ax for a pulaski, and how do those tool fists mount to the rack? I've been thinking about tool mounts for a while but don't want to buy a whole set (basket, x-bars, tool accessories, etc.) and would rather use what I have.. cheers!

it seems the forester is the least pricey of the bunch and the XV may be in the low to mid 20s. The non manual transmission will be the CVT, not a good choice for off-roading, and the manual will be sweet. If you can wait 3-5 months I think you can start getting 2013s by summer/fall. I thnk it'll be a pretty sweet rig, longer WB and wider track than the big forester, shorter and not as tall as well. good interior storage and passenger space (since the new IMP is the size of a gen 2 legacy)
-
yup. I speced one (from car quest) for my 95 leggo (cable) and one for my wife's 03 OBS. They were like $80-$100 different, but the part numbers were really the same. I called the manufacturer (exedy) and the tech in the warehouse said the specs are the same and they are the same materials and parts, save a minniscual spec difference for the 2.5 engine (although no differences in torque or HP spec), which amounted to allowing them to charge more for it... So with caution you could get on for a gen 2 leggacy and save money, or go for your particular car, or go for the 99 OB spec... you shuold go in and ask them to spec out all of them and have a laugh
-
and rear diff too no doubt? So that'll be a 4.11 axle ratio!! You will be in LOVE, compared to a 3.90 with tall tires, off road!!!
-
Umm, YEAH!!! Might need a camber kit for the rear too, looks a little caddywompuss. Me thinks you may consider a touch of driveline lowing... Doesn't all that push you a touch over 2" greater than stock? Looks awesome G! the tires are gunna be full sweet sickness!
-
THAT is going to look SIIIICK with the kings!! Might need a tint too
-
Yeah copy that!!! I'm 3 months out on my rig. needs timing kit done, has a baaaad coolant leak and needs some resealing too... But I'm waiting on an Aussie kid to send me a fun bit, then I'll do it all together! Then you'll REALLY need to swing by Moab some time!!! Bring your bro and I'll get Jim from Flagstaff up here in his rally car too! We'll have LOADS of fun!

you going resealed EJ25, and sticking with an EA dual range 4x4 I hope?

Yeah they're full time AWD! I researched this for like 7-8 years and shopped for 6-7. I toyed with the idea of an EA82 4x4 swap but woul want it geared to 4.11 for my oversize tires, BUT i really love AWD and didn't want FWD. It's a tossup b/c it won't be a locked center like an EA box, BUT it'll be full time AWD and a low gear. It should be like USDM forester gearing (with a nice 5th, when compared to our gen 1 OB's high-spun 5th), but with a decent low. Sure, not as awesome as an EA82's 1.59:1, but not as lame as the typical 1.19:1... AND it's a bolt on application. You could get a loyale 3.9 FD or a 2nd gen OB or FOR with 4.11 FD but they'd have 1.19:1 low, then you could swap in 4.11's AND 1.59:1 low, but you're cracking and marrying 3 transmissions to do it. This way it's a really good combination and no opening to do... :confused:umm yeah, its a penny to ship, a pretty penny. a little over a grand As far as I know it's like the 3rd DR AWD to make it over the pond. I found a shop in Canada with 2-3 but he wanted waaaay too much for them, plus shipping. Also there's this shop that builds them, but again they wanted like $815 for a used one not gone through, plus about a grand shipping... http://www.alldrivesubaroo.com.au/ anyhoo, it's supposedly being shipped out Monday... I've been working on shipping since November. But we're getting there

they're AUDM, JDM and SADM spec, pretty much anywhere but USA. Older (gen 1) foresters were 4.11 FD and 1.44:1 low, pretty much all the others (OBs, gen 2 and newer foz and all legacy/loyales) are 1.19:1 low EXCEPT the rare impreza that's 3.90 FD and 1.59:1 low. legacy/loyales and OBs vary from 3.70 to 3.90 to 4.11 FD but are all 1.19:1 low
