Convertible update?
Jack in Norfolk replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good to be back. Didn't a friend of yours buy one in CT? He was a young guy right? And I think it had round headlights . -
Robin SUBARU Vs. Honda

That's awesome! have you ever seen the subaru scooter; the "rabbit'? Its like a vespa. they are pretty rare but I've seen a few on ebay. -
That is lame. There are not many cars that can handle Alaskan terrain or winters and still make operating a vehice possible w/ Alaskan gas prices. What a thoughtless waste of a sube. I used to work on a ship out of Seattle that went up to AK every summer. When I went to Shoreline for my fire training, one of the cars that we had to practice extiguishing was a Sube. It looked like it had been an A/T 2wd 4door sedan, 86 or newer. It was probably scorched when they got a hold of it, but it still bothered me to see it set ablaze every day. I guess its for a good cause if it is helping people to learn safety.

Does Skip have one of these in his Brat go kart? -
Its been a while since I have checked in on the Subaru board. I was just wondering if there are any new developments in the convertible department. I know ritchie had one. I thought that there was another convertible owner or two on this board up in Connecticut. I recently saw the 4wd turbo convertible from Lake Tahoe sell on Ebay: wow! That thing was awesome. So I am just wondering if anyone on this board has made any progress as far getting thier conv. in shape. Any news pics to post? Thanks. -Jack

Can you fit the grill and headlight assembly from a 1980 in the palce of the grill/headlamp assmbly on a 1982 car?

There is one in the market place, but it sounds like it is a done deal. I was just wondering if anymore have shown up since the last time I checked in on the board (12/03). Richie- what is the status on yours? Any recent pics? Will there be a converible featured on the calendar?

Favorite tools and other "must haves"

I had a friend that did a lot of work on my old sube. I told him that I wanted to take advantage of the adjustable ride height (you can crank up the torsion bar and the struts). He pointed out that they were rusted solid. Another guy that is in the Navy was in the shop. He went to his truck and got this can of spray. I dont know what it was, but had seriously heavy fumes. I was 5 ft from the car when he sprayed it on the front struts and I still winced and my eyes watered. It was almost instant. The rust just melted away. Forget about soaking it in liquid wrench or using a wire brush. This stuff was amazing. He gave me the can. It was "military issue" so I used it sparingly. If you can get your hands on any of that stuff, by all means do so. -Jack -
I was just thinking the other night that this would be a great way to come up with money for the board. I put up the VW magazine's calendar every year (I've never owned a VW, yet:D ) I think that you might be making a mistke by offering two seperate calendars for offroading and classic subes. I think that you should make one and fill it with all sorts of coolstuff that makes us ooh and ahh. Everything from the US Ski team wagon, to a super built Hatch patrol pic to a nice shot of some cool sube models/toys and the elusive convertible. I personally dont need to see a whole lot more Modern subes (wrx etc...) but that certainly wouldnt disuade me from picking up a calandar and it is just my opinion. Another plus of not making two this year, is that you will have that many more shots left for next years'!! go for it dude. Let me know if I can help in any way. Again, I am strongly in favor of this project benefitting the board financially. -Jack

adjustable ride height?

and its my understanding that it isnt all that hard to switch from auto to 5 speed, right? does the trip computer still work if you do that switch? -Jack -
diff lock, years available?

4 lo on the beach is a bad idea in any vehicle, Jeep, Sube, ATV, or hummer. You go straight down. The only time I would use it on a sube would probably be at the boat ramp if my boat had a lot of water in it, or maybe on a steep snow incline. -

so is it true that they were only available on automatics? -
I have been told that the pneumatic suspension is bad and to avoid it because it is very expensive to replace. I have also read that it was only available on auto matics (at least on the GL10s) Is any of this true? -Jack

so the full time 4wd is all but useless off road? can you explain that one a little better? It just doesnt have any low end torque (hard to imagine any sube with that problem) or what? I was thinking about getting a Gl10 wagon and trying to decide if the D/R or diff lock was better. Also contemplating an rx swap so I could have D/R and diff lock. I would be using the car on road 9-% of the time. My off roading would probably be the beach (which 9 times out of 10 I dont need 4wd in my Jeep) and maybe some easy trails. I would not be building this one up with a lift etc... I'm not wild about running full time 4wd. Seems like a waster around here since it snows like once a year and you have to go out of your way to find somewhere you need 4wd. But I would like the turbo and all the features that come with the gl10 (trip computer etc..) So given that application, what do you think? -Jack -
what years did the diff lock come in wagons? were they ever in Loyales? What was the last year the GL10 was offered? -Jack

If you are paying a grand for 4 tires than you have bigger problems than dog pee!!! I got 4 BFG AT KOs (31") for just over $500. Most of you guys cant even fit decent size tires on your vehicles. Is this dog peeing on more than one of your cars?

I think the ony one who may have had more fun in my 86 wagon than me might have been my dog. He loved that car. We went to the mountains, drove on the beach, and all sorts of other places in between. He barked at many an odd species through the windows. Down in Corolla there are ferrel horses, pigs and goats that run free around the dunes. He loved to bark at them. I think he even sniffed noses with a horse through the back window of the sube. He could stretch out in the back seat, or if I put the seats down, he could really get comfortable, but his favorite place to ride seemed to be the front seat. He and my girlfriend did not see eye to eye on who should be riding shotgun. Whenever I left him in the car, he would always sit in the driver's seat until I got back. I actually thought about letting him drive until I saw that other Geico comercial where the black lab drives the truck into the lake chasing a squirrel. I know he would do the same thing if he saw a duck!

I did not mean for this to be a personal attack on any one. I was just adding my two bits. Sorry to put anybody on the defensive.

RedRX- I'm glad somebody got the point. I couldn't agree with you more.
