  1. man, sounds like you should invest in some of those deer whistles. I bought some after a couple close calls when i worked at massanutten. I guess they worked, because I didnt have any more close calls.
  2. here's a dog story for you: When I was younger I used to lifeguard in VA in the summers. Pretty easy gig except when we had noreasters. So its a summer weekend and all the tourons (tourist morons) are out in full force (why is it that when people go on vacation they dont pack thier brains?). Its been a slow day, a couple of lost children and one heat exhaustion victim. From out of nowhere comes this dog trotting up the beach. I am a little annoyed because dogs arent allowed on the beach. I expect some idiot to be right behind the dog. Nobody was there so I called the dog up to my stand and he came. Upon closer inspection he looked like an emaciated hound dog. He started vomitting seawater. He was in bad shape. He was a lost golden retriever. He looked worried. He was well trained and he sat there under my stand for a while. I gave him the rest of my water. Regrettably the rookie guard the next stand down reported it on her radio (the same frequency that the dog catchers use). Veteran guards learn not to do this the first time they see a dog hauled off to the pound. I started calling friends and my girlfriend to see if anyone could pick the dog up before the dog catcher got there. No luck. I figured I could keep him in my yard until somone responeded to an add or adopted him but it was not to be. He was put in the truck and hauled away. Dogs in the VA BEach pound have 10 days to live. I had to be back in the mountains at school in 7. I already had a place leased right next to interstate 81. Not the best place for a dog. I asked that the animal control lady call me if nobody picked him up. She said she would. I told my parents and my friends about the dog. I got no call from the pound. I went up to school. 2 weeks later I came back to fill my subaru wagon up with a second load of furniture and other crap. Before I got to my house I saw my Dad walking a big healthy looking golden retriever. I stopped the car and got out. The dog ran over and jumped up and started licking my face. He must have remembered me. Lucky for him, and me, my mom and brother went and got him on the last day. The lady never called. My mom put an add in the paper. A guy called and identified him. He told her his name and that he would come and get him. That was about 6 years ago and we still havent seen him. The dog is right here next to me. He has turned out to be a great companion. He weighs about 100 lbs and he can almost look me in the eye when he stands up (I'm 6'3"). He is the biggest pure bred I have ever seen. It turns out he had been wondering the resort strip lost for 2 weeks when I found him. He got down to 60lbs on that big frame. He has a few unique traits that he must have acquired when he was lost on the street. He knows how to drink out of water fountains. He never loses a fight, not even to my cousin's pit or my old roomate's rot or the two black labs down the street. I dont let him fight, because I know he may not be so lucky with other dogs, but when he was younger he didnt listen as well. Also, whenever he sees me in the water, if my head goes under, he immediately starts barking and charges into the water (even in 6' hurricane surf) to "rescue" me. I'm not sure why he does it. Anyways, he has certainly earned his keep. In college he lead me home from parties when I had a few too many. He caught a guy trying to break in to my truck. He attracts more women than any lifted Jeep, and he's nice to have around when you have to walk through a sketchy part of town after dark. Not to mention the countless number of tennis ball recoveries he has so fearlessly performed. I'm not trying to guilt trip anybody. I do not lecture on this board and I dont get negative. I just want to say that I love dogs. People get emotional on the board when we talk about whether hondas are cooler than subes. I got a little upset when I read the posts celebrating injurring and killing animals. C'mon guys, there are so many better things to crash into and run over (like hondas ) Its tough being a dog. They were not designed to live up to impact with a subaru. Life is hard enough running from dog catchers, tolerating negligent owners, constantly defending the house from the mailman, and trying to find that damned ball, without having to worry about gettin mowed down. So next time that obnoxious dog chases you down the road or runs out in front of you, or craps on your lawn, just remeber. That might be somebody's friend. It might even be somebody's ONLY friend. Most dogs that do stuff like that arent stupid dogs, but they do have stupid owners that dont train them or pay any attention to them. This has dragged on entirely too long, and for that I appoligize. But if it made anyone slow down or stop, then it was worth it. As for the deer, um... well if you must hit the deer, at least make some venison jerky:lol: -Jack
  3. I'd like to go. I dont have a subaru to drive at the moment, but I think I can borrow one. Or maybe I will have bought one by then.
  4. How hard is it to put a windshield and the glass for the front passenger door in an EA81 4 door sedan?
  5. almost forgot... what is this? is it easy? is there something that makes it undesireable for off road use? Just wondering why everyone is cruising around on pugeot wheels if you could put some 5 lugs on there.
  6. do you gys use a strut tower bar? i dont know if the car came with them or not or if anyone makes them, but It seems like the subes i have driven would benefit.
  7. i'd love to see pics of the woody. (that sounds really bad, but i think you know what I mean.)
  8. http://www.rallyclassified.com/detail.php?cat=18&de=155 where would you get wheels like that? Who makes racing cams for an ea82T?
  9. Is there an scca class for people that want to rally race? Do you have to have a roll cage and stuff? Are there local chapters or would I have to move back to seattle? Do any of you guys do it? I used to go to scca autocross races with my friend and flag corners somtimes. Is there anything that entry level for rally racing? I had seen a few announcements for "road rallies" on the blue ridge parkway when I was in Harrisonburg, but that is a different thing from racing; that seems like more of an exercise in navigation. I get enough of that at work:banghead: :madder: !!!
  10. wait a minute, I didnt follow your story. was the maxima a diesel, or was the 300D (a benz right?) the diesel in which you left them all behind? I didnt know nissan made a diesel, but I just assumed they must have because a naturally aspirated benz may be the only thing my old subbie GL wagon ever blew the doors off of.
  11. are you noticing your engines running cooler? any deviations in oil pressure?
  12. yeah, while we are on the subject, does it matter how big your air intake is? All of the tuner catalogs sell specific size for specific cars, but does it matter? Cant you have as big and as many intakes as you want? As far as cool air induction, here in my whopper of a dumb idea for the weekend (i get them from time to time). Why not direct the cold air from an AC unit into the air intake? I know that the ac robs a lot of power (especially in a subaru) but I was just wondering if it would be worth it. -Jack
  13. I messed around with this on my 86 gl 4x4 wagon. It certainly was not ram air, but cold air induction. I found a way to snake a hose around the radiator and to the grill so that air was blowing straight in. I never noticed a difference, but it wasnt that straight a shot for the air. As a matter of fact, I never noticed any difference with hotter plugs, or the k&n air filter I added either. Oh well. It never hurts to keep that engine cool. Why not just drive around without a hood:D ? I never felt like I had done a good job at installing cold air induction, but it think it is a worthwhile pursuit. go for it.
  14. what happens when you add it to a turbo?
  15. one of my buddies switched from oil to synthetic weel before 100k and he had leaking probs on an old integra (what ever years the first body style was.) thats why I was curious.
  16. Archimitis- it may not be dragging, but volvo sets records routinely outrunning performance gas boats with thier turbo diesel racing hydro planes. Snowman- I was in alaska all summer on a ship (sitka, seward, kodiak, anchoarge, homer). I did not make it to haynes although I would like to. I hear they have an awesome 4 event contest every year (surfing, snowboarding, hunting, fishing). Anyways, I was wondering how routine it really is for guys to guy way out with only one power plant? Most people I know have some sort of ack up, even if its a gas kicker outboard. Redundancy seems to be key on ships/boats i.e 2 compasses, 2 generators, two engines, props etc.... just curious. -Jack
  17. when if ever is this a good idea? I have heard stories of people switching later in the car's life and having probs w/ oil leaks. I was wondering at what point (milage) people switched, and when was too high of miulage to switch. Also, what about synthetic diff lube? -Jack
  18. how do old subies take to nitrous? I started thinking about how light the old ea81 turbo cars are and my mind started to wander. I started thinking about4 wheel traction, less than 2000lbs, a turbo charger, and nitrous??? wow. I guess that is how they ended up with the wrx. Does anyone have nitrous runnin in an ea81 or ea82? Can they take it? Just wondering how and aluminum block and head would take all that compression. -Jack
  19. sounds good. although I thought that a brillo par might be a little harsh? But if you guys say so. -Jack
  20. how do you clean alloys? How clean can you expect to get them? These have been sitting in a junkyard for a while and have green algae like stains on them.
  21. but you can swap in an LSD into an EA81 car, is that correct?
  22. ok, now that I have thoroughly confused several about the center locking diff, what's up with the LSD? I thought that these were common on sports cars. How does it work? What is the advantage off road? Is it the same thing as posi traction? If you havent got an LSD, what have you got?
  23. ?????? you mean weld the gears together so they wont slip?
  24. ok, let me get this straight, the diff locking mechanism is in the tranny? So if you have a car that came with a locking diff but not dual range, you cant just swap in any dr tranny and keep the original locker? I'm am just rying to make sure I follow you. This sounds alot different from lockers on Jeeps and other trucks.
  25. I have only seen this once in real life (on a sube anyways). Which diff is it that locks? What are the advantages? Why arent you guys swapping this into your hopped up brats and hatches? Just curious. Also, could you get diff lock with the DR? -Jack
