  2. I think that a Subaru could be a force to be reckoned with at this event. http://24hoursoflemons.com/ Subes are inexpensive and fairly indestructable and some of you on this board know how to make them go fast! It looks like it could be a lot of fun.
  3. I know a guy who was planning to make some cash by waiting outside by the lines for the new video game systems this holiday season and selling hotdogs. This would be the perfect vehicle to roll up to the best buy parking lot in!
  4. excellent call. on a similar note, whats up with the resvoir bottle? Is it leaking or cracked somewhere? That was the problem in my Jeep. Luckily this is a very cheap fix.
  5. Coincidentally, I once worked at our local ski hill and was driving home one night. At a stop light I noticed billowing white smoke from the tailpipe. Also, there was absolutley no heat and the temp guage was nearing the red zone. All of this happened pretty quickly. I got that cold sinking feeling and thought I had finally killed the sube. By incredible luck, it turned out to be this little coolant hose that was out of sight. Upon replacement, the car ran like a top. Some times you get lucky. If your car is heating up on you on hills but not losing coolant, it might be your water pump giving up the ghost, or you may have a buble in your coolant. How is the heater working? I had to burp the coolant in my Jeep once. It did the trick though. I didn't have to get a new heater core. good luck.

  10. When I had my 86 gl wagon, I had busted ther front axles and was too broke to make repairs. I pulled the 4wd lever and drove around in real wheel drive. When I put it in low and dumped the clutch, I thought the front wheels were going to come off the ground. By the way, this was a terrible way to treat such a cool little car. I was young and dumb. Makes a good story though

  14. In 1986, what model would Subaru have chosen as a factory sponsored rally car? Did Subaru participate in rallying back then? I have seen old pics of rally prepared Subes I just did not know if they were backed by the manufacturer. When I was 19 and had my wagon, I always had images of a rally prepared 1986 wagon. It doesn't seem like a logical choice given the weight to hp ration and everything. Does anyone know if wagons were raced in the 80s? Thanks. -Jack

  17. Its been a while now and I can't remember exactly, but I had assumed she was saying that they were in 4wd all winter, not just had the hubs locked.

  19. Dude! I bought my 86 4wd D/R GL wagon with 90k on the clock in 1997 for $400. Granted it needed exhaust and a headlight, but still, that price the guy gave you is unbelieveable! Does it come with a side of Range Rover? Serioulsy, if you find an 86 you like (and the other guy was right, the carb it came with does indeed suck) check out the cv joints, ball joints, motor mounts (these were the things that broke on mine) and all the typical Subaru stuff (tick of death, cracked head, etc...). For the record, I loved my 86. One of the best cars ever. I put 100k on the odometer and sold it for $800. It still didn't burn any oil on the day I sold it.

  22. This thread brings up an interesting question that I have been meaning to ask. I listen to the radio program "Car Talk" on NPR. One morning a girl from Alaska called about her 86 4wd Subaru GL wagon. She said that her father and her brothers all put thier trucks in 4wd in October and left them that way until spring. She had been doing the same thing in the Sube. I guess she had heard not to do it and was calling to find out if it was bad for her car. They told her that if she operated the part time 4wd on dry pavement, it could cause the car to flip over. I have heard reasons why you aren't supposed to drive in "real" (not awd) 4wd on dry pavement, but never because you will flip. Have you guys ever heard this? Oh, and for the record, I used to drive 4 hours home from Harrisonburg in 4wd when it was snowing/sleeting/raining, usurally averaging around 70 mph.
  23. Very interesting. I have been discussing this with my esteemed collegue (my golden retriever). We have decided that there is no way that this could work without a flux capacitor.
