Take off the manifold.  Clean the faces. Set it in place, try a feeler gauge to see if you can pick up on how flat the faces are lining up to each other.  You might need to use a set of gaskets while doing this, depending on clearances,  etc.  Maybe lightly installing a couple of the bolts

    ah! of course. thanks dave!

They are not supposed to be into the coolant.  Even if one [of the 2 near the coolant port] was drilled too deep, it would intersect a head bolt.   The outermost one - on each end, those might eventually hit a coolant passage if you were to drill deep enough, but they do not connect in a stock head.  The head bolts are not really sealed off from the crank case, but the head bolt and washer make it not really open either.

In a stock head, if there is coolant in the space around an intake bolt, it is coming from a failing intake gasket, or crack or warp in the manifold.

ah thanks dave. I've struggled with keeping intake gaskets from leaking on this engine. I've gone through 3 sets in the last year alone.

They fail in the same place every time, drivers side intake bolt closest to the front of the engine.

Totally possible the intake is warped.

  3. Haha yeah I know the procedure. It’s crazy though. I was using a 7lb hammer and a 2x4 and couldn’t get the thing off.

guess I’ll smash harder and see what happens. I have another as well. I’ll take that apart and see if the outer joint removes easier on that one.

maybe the one I have is just stuck.

  4. It seems for the life of me I cannot get the outer joint off this axle! Inner joint, no problem. A couple of rings and it came off.

I read you just have to clamp the axle and "smash" the outer joint until it pops over the c retaining ring. Welp. I've been smashing and smashing but this thing will not budge.

    What's the deal? smash harder?

  5. Hey Ya'll I've been looking for pictures of people who have Two Tone painted their Old Gens and found a thread from...2006.

For those who have been around here, ya it was post photo bucket collapse. All the photos were gone besides Miles Fox's. It was not a  kind of thread.

So I'm here to start a new one or be pointed to an existing one!

Post your Two Tone photos here!

I'm painting mine in the next two weeks. I'll post when it's all set.

    Cheers y'all!

  6. Hey hey -

Swapping the heads on a forester right now that had a couple belt valves from breaking a timing belt.

my dog, a doof, stepped on the timing covers while they were off and broke them!

I know people run open covers on the EA82, I do that myself, but I’m wondering if anyone goes without the covers on the EJ25.

Gotta finish the job today. What do y’all say? Okay to run this forester w/o timing covers?

But that coolant dosen't just disappear, if you aren't burning it in the exhaust (white smoke on start up?) then it's going into the oil and those bearings will be hating life.

It's hard to tell because it's been so hecking cold in Chicago (-20), but it believe I'm getting a lot of white smoke on start up. It seems to go away after a couple of minutes and I'm definitely smelling a sweet smell to the exhaust. Could that be some failed intake gaskets? I did change them when I got the car because they were leaking. I think I used some chepo gaskets.

I've only seen coolant in the oil once.  Very blown headgaskets.  Not the early initial stages when the coolant just keeps disappearing, or small bubbles in the recovery tank.  I've been down this road a number of times.

My experience with the coolant level you describe - it may have been drawn down by a slow leak anywhere - to the outside of the block, down the intake.  But the level low in the radiator + over normal temperature [does not have to get into or even near the red] has always lead to failed head gaskets, it might be 6 days, might be 6 months.   I never had one consuming coolant down the intake at a high enough rate to show smoke [steam] in the exhaust.

@DaveT When I first got on here i remember you saying to use good intake gaksets because the non-OEM ones are bogus. Maybe this is what's causing my problem and not Head Gaskets....my engine temps seem to be normal to me....what do ya think?

  8. Hey Ya'll

Just checked my coolant levels last night and the reservoir tank was empty. Checked the rad and it was low as well. I'm fearing the worst...head gaskets starting to fail...got some sludge on the oil cap and a bit on the dip stick....

I've also heard it's possible to get these symptoms with a failing intake gasket...my hope (of course) are that the intake gaskets are failing to keep the coolant passage closed.

In everyone's experience what do you think?

I haven't noticed any major overheating, but the bit of sludge on the dip stick really has me worried.

Is it possible to get these symptoms with a failing intake gasket?

    Thanks!

Plus the Tercel, 505(?) and the Magna of the same era - very close back in the day but easily distinguishable apart today!

I still Iove the L series and it’s shape. I also love the fact that I can choose what computers to put in it. Currently it has one for the EJ. It’ll stay this way too.

    Cheers

    Bennie -

Do you have an EJ ECU and an EA82 engine?  I didn't realize they were compatible like that.
