  1. I don't think it's the brakes, but I will definitely check it out. I'm not sure what the temp to look for is though.
  2. I'm not trying to shift though. It's more like...say I'm in first or second and accelerating to keep the pace with slow traffic. So I get to 3,000 in first or second and traffic is slowing down so I let off the gas without shifting in order to coast or slow a bit. this is when I'm getting the engine breaking or jolting feeling. Is it just me then? Instead of just letting off the gas at 3,000 and staying in the same gear should I just shift it into neutral and coast, then shift back into gear when it's time to move again?
  3. -----SKIP TO 2018 POSTS FOR THIS FIX------ Hey everyone curious if you could help me with something I've been pondering for a while concerning my 88 GL. Generally if I am in a high rev range say 3,000 and I let off the throttle the engine breaks really hard. so much so that my body is jolted a bit inside the car. I feel it most in gears 1-3, and less in 4 or 5, but it's happens in every gear. This is my first manual transmission, in other (automatic) cars have driven when you let off the throttle, no matter the speed, you just kind of coast. Is what I am experiencing normal for manuals or GL's or older cars? Is there something i am doing wrong like reving to high and staying in the same gear? Any advise would be valuable to me right now, I feel like I'm doing bad things to the engine and I'm hoping senior dog will last for a long while. Let me know what you're thinking. Thanks
  4. I had thought of this. I'm going to swap out to the old intake soon and see if it's just my imagination. I do like the look of the new intake though and cleaning or swapping out the filter is a much quicker process now which I also like as well as the engine space and overall de-cluttered feeling of the new filter. If there is power loss I'm sure it's negligible, but yes I agree it could be my imagination. I'll update with results when I swap back to the old intake...not sure if I actually want to cut up my hood to vent hot air when summer comes, which will be absolutely necessary with this new set up.

  7. okay say worst case senario I had to order one off say Rock Auto. anyone know which size would be appropriate? 33.40" 33.50" or 36"? anyone educated guess? Also looks like my VIN wont register on "parts.subaru.com"....

  9. Hey ya'll looking to replace my clutch cable and I'm seeing two different sizes when I look up the part. 33.5" and 36" will both sizes work for the 88 GL? I don't want to take mine off and measure...looks like it's at the end of its life. If anyone knows which size or if either would work lemme know.
  10. Hey ya'll just wanted to share a recent upgrade to my 88 GL. Swapped the old air intake for a short RAM. I welded the MAF adaptor plate myself and right now it's held in place (temporarily) by a modified hack saw blade (it was what I had laying around the house). So far I've been really pleased with the results! Getting way more throttle response in 1,2, and 3 (increased acceleration) in 4 it seems a little slower to get up to speed, but not much and 5 seems the same. I haven't noticed any increase or decrease in gas mileage, but I also haven't charted it out and I'm not really concerned. Best part is the acceleration for sure, it used to be so slow to get up to speed, not anymore. It's winter here in MI so I haven't had to deal with venting hot engine air yet....waiting on that for the Summer. I have noticed though that the acceleration is slower once the engine warms up a bit, but still better than it was before. I'll be looking to get a water shield for it soon as well, but we have had some rain recently and I've been driving it around. The engine bay stays dry so I'm not to concerned about hydro lock. If anyone wants me to weld up an adaptor plate for them lemme know!

  12. Alright I was told by someone that you couldn't re-seal them, but I figured that probably wasn't the case. anyone else feel like chiming in?
  13. Hey everyone looks like my hill holder on my 88 GL is leaking from a seal. I was curious if it's possible to replace the seals in these or if it's necessary to just get a new hill holder which is proving difficult to find. I'd rather not remove it and have to route more brake line wanna stay stock unless someone has good reason to persuade me otherwise (open to options). I'm loosing about 2TB of brake fluid every two weeks as it stands now. So yeah....possible to repair this thing? Anyone have any solutions for deleting it and maybe a MC upgrade or maybe that's not necessary? Lemme know what ya'll are thinking. TJ
  14. Hey ya'll wanting to replace my old brake lines and I'd like to go with a little upgrade so I'm thinking about stainless steel lines. Can anyone point me to a site? 88GL wagon.....everywhere I am looking right now is only offering rubber lines. Thanks.
  15. Only things I can think of off the top of my head would be the Idle Air Control Valve, Throttle Body Sensor, or something to do with the throttle plate.
  16. HELLO BACK AGAIN with solutions to problems.... Okay so as for the first issue posted in this thread. the alternator and battery issue was actually just a crap alternator right out of the box. wired the new one up the same way and it's working perfectly on all fronts. Now i was having an issue with the car idle and it turns out that was due to a really dirty IAC (idle air control valve) took it off and cleaned it and it's working perfectly. I was also having an issue with the car starting and it turned out the spark plugs and ignition coil were just in bad shape. wanted to let ya'll know everything is working perfectly now and I can finally enjoy my GL! it's been great to drive. thanks for all the help everyone!

  18. yeah that's what mine is right now, but only when the clutch is engaged. Once it's in gear and driving it idles fine, as soon as the clutch is pressed in to switch gears or when stopping it revs to around 2000 or 3000 rpms..... ideas?
  19. anyway to clean the IAC without taking it off the car or should I just not be lazy and take it of for a good cleaning..... < - - - maybe this method?
  20. the car just idles really high. around 2,000 even when it's been sitting over night in 10 degree weather.....hey it started this morning though and the new alternator seems to be charging the battery! so that's good news.
  21. alright this is what we found out today. there is spark to the engine. also gas to the engine. switched out all spark plugs and ignition coil...still wouldnt start...wanted to turn over but wouldnt quite make it ever after HEAT. Finally somehow it started just craking it. ran for about ten minutes at around 2,000 RMP.....then stalled out and wouldnt start again. I'm thinking it's something with the idle air valve or throttle position sensor that isn't letting enough gas or to much or whatever to let it start consistently. gonna clean the idle air valve tomorrow and see if that helps.....fingers crossed.... any ideas yall? I'm open to suggestions for sourcing parts.. cleaning parts.... or whatever you're thinking.
  22. I'm pretty sure the wiring is right and there is something else up with the car. charged my battery over night and it still wouldn't turn over. getting some help with it on saturday. I'll post results here when i get them.

DaveT, The two wires from the original plug are the white w/ red stripe and the black w/ white stripe what I connected to the new plug for the Nissan alt..... one is around 16 the other might be a 12 or something close to that. just attached them with the spades you see in the photo to the new plug from the nissan alt.....think this is wrong?
