My 1996 2.2 outback has been increasingly intermittent when starting, to the point where it may take 20 minutes of trying to start it. Battery is good, starter does work when it gets the signal. A think the alternator is good, as I have never had a dead battery. I hear a clicking when I turn the key, would that be the solenoid trying to engage? The second phase of my issue is that when it does crank it will not fire. It died on the road the other day. There's a whirring type noise when it does crank, does not sound good. I'm just a little stumped on where to start with checking electrical things. There's also a delay to when you turn the key to the start position before it will crank. The click will be immediate, but the cranking takes a couple seconds. I apologize for how random all this information is, but hopefully one of you guys will understand it. Thanks!

I've been reading a ton about the lifters, piston slap, tension pulley, and rod knocks. Now I want to run my sounds by you all to try to narrow it down. It's like a loud tick or clacking. It seems to be either driver side or middle of the engine. Definitely does up and down with RPM. It clicks at idle as well. Hot or cold, its there. Its on a 96 outback 2.2. 212xxx miles. Just changed the oil to Castrol 5w 30. I have not yet tried the MMO approach yet, I just got the car. What does it sound like to you all? What would be the most direct way to determine and fix it? thanks!

I thought this dead horse could use a little more beating. I would like to lift my 96 Legacy Outback. With the intention of putting on larger tires, as you do. Currently my 205 70 15 tires are about a 1/4" from the rear strut spring perch. (i think that's what it's called). Which year struts should I use for the front and rear? Would a small wheel spacer help? I figure if those can get me a couple more inches i may get some 235 70 15 under it. Thanks!

DaveT, you've been so helpful! Yes, there is coolant leaking down the passenger side exhaust. The pipe was quite full of coolant and oil. Also, the exhaust pipe was broken off below the turbo mounting flange, which explains the smoke in the engine bay. Do you recommend a place to get heads? I would probably do it with the engine in.

89 gl turbo. I'm having a leak somewhere on the passenger side rear of the engine. Close to the turbo. I just replaced the turbo gaskets and coolant houses under it. I was thinking exhaust port cracked? It overheated before I worked on the turbo. It's billowing white vapor from the engine bay and exhaust. Especially when giving throttle. Thanks for the help everyone!

Hey guys, 1989 gl wagon turbo, I just replaced my turbo mounting gaskets and (pita) coolant hoses. Now, it won't start, though it ran great right before. I could faintly smell fuel, though I'm not ruling fuel problems out completely. It did sit for about 3 weeks. I'm not getting spark, nothing to the dist, and nothing to the coil. I do have power in and out of the 4 fuses next to the battery. Where do you estimate I'm losing power from the fuses to the coil (bad coil?)? Is it an ignition switch? Some solenoid? Any ideas on what to check for would be appreciated!

I just noticed that it's leaking coolant out of all the gaskets on the turbo that connect to exhaust. What does that mean?? -

I'll give it a shot! Do I need to replace those gaskets when i put it back together? Are there any oil lines i should be worried about? -
Hey everyone, After a brief overheating, my Subaru, 89 gl wagon turbo 180xxx miles, has begun billowing smoke/exhaust/coolant from under the turbo. It seeps a little from the gasket on the bottomside leaving a white residue. But that doesn't account for the cloud that is created from somewhere under the turbo. It smells and tastes sweet, with a touch of regular exhaust, delicious. Also, I want to replace the coolant hose, as that may be spraying on the exhaust. Do I need to remove the turbo? How do I do that? Oil was low at time of overheating, it's a leakaru right now, but a bit more than usual. And obviously, the coolant goes down FAST. But,the oil is clean and the coolant is clean, so I don't think it's a head gasket issue.. knock on wood. Any advice would be great! To clarify my questions: What's the best way to replace turbo coolant hose? What would cause such a massive cloud of coolant steam/exhaust? Assuming I replace the hose and fix the exhaust leak (whatever it is), what else would cause coolant to be burning and going through the exhaust? Thanks a lot! (and yes, I've been researching and youtubing like crazy, but im stumped.)
