1) remove the negative battery cable 2) Under the center arm rest, there are 2 screws, remove them and the shift panel will pull up. Do not remove it, but shift it aside. 3) Remove the ash tray and the 3 screws that hold the slide plate in ( 2 on top and one in the back) 4) Remove the cup holder 2 screws. Now the CD face plate should come out 5) The CD changer is held in with 6 screws (before you remove them, place some rags at the bottom to catch the screws that will fall. 6) Carefully pull the unit and mounting brackets fwd and unplug the connectors. That should do it. Not tough, but care is needed. Note this was for my 98 Outback, but I believe yours is the same. Larry

I have them on mine, no problem. Check the www.nasioc.com board the WRX guys pull them all the time. If you watch, you see them go for $200 and up with less than 5000 miles on them. How are your old rims? If they are in good shape and you're going to sell, let me know. Thanks Larry Lmdew@hotmail.com

Warning, www.apb_auto.com I purchased some Legacy door panels from APB Auto online; they have a couple of email and are located in OH. They said they were in stock and would be shipped the next day. Two weeks later they showed up. Turns out they were shipped from another yard in WA state, to OH then to me in CO. The panels were damaged on top of being late. I returned them to the WA yard at their request and my costs. Two months later, still no refund! I should have known, as they did not take PayPal credit card payments! I would never purchase part from them again!

I picked up a 92 2WD Loyale wagon with a bad Auto Trans. I can push it forward in neutral, but only a foot or two in reverse and it locks up. Also the starter will not turn the engine, but I can rotate it through by had with normal resistance. I think I could unbolt the torque converter and that should free the engine from the trans, but I could still start the motor. Will it work? I want to check out the engine prior to doing the auto to manual trans swap. Ideas? Thanks Larry

WANTED: Body panels for HATCH...
lmdew replied to Allouez's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Several hatches in the yard by me. They get 30 per fender. The rear qtr. will have to be cut out, won't they? Add shipping from 80919, Colorado Springs. -
As far as I know it should work fine, but if anyone has tips or problems solved please let me know. Car I'm fixing 92 Wagon 1.8 3sp auto trans FWD is bad. Found a 88 GL wagon 1.8 5sp MT FWD I did this swap on a 93 to 92 Legacy but not the older Subarus. Things Needed: Trans and aft mounts Shifter and trim Clutch/brake box and pedals Clutch cable Clutch Kit flywheel and bolts Starter Speedo cable That should be it as far as I know. I believe the swap is straight forward. Thanks for the info

Make sure the bracket that holds the water pipe is not bent. If it is, the pipe does not slide far enough into the pump. A shop that did my headgaskets once spent a week trying to fix the leak. I finally got the car back and a week later it started leaking. After pulling a pound of RTV off the pump and pipe and fixing the bracket which they bent, life was good.

Timing problem ?
lmdew replied to Mr2old's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Make sure you check the marks after the tensioner has been able to do its job. I just did a 2.2 belt and triple checked the marks. All looked fine even after turning it over by hand a few times, but it ran just like yours. Pulled it apart and the marks were off. Reset the timing and Life was good. Good Luck -
Do you still have the Car? I need a good 2WD Auto for a 90 Loyal. Lmdew@hotmail.com Would take the whole car if you think it would make it to Colorado. Thanks, Larry

The waterpumps have two weep holes. The one on the back side, you can't see until its pulled. If the pump is leaking, you may be loosing a small amount of coolant and it's not be sucked back in from the overflow bottle. You'd run fine until the coolant got low and then you'd see the overheat, but the overflow bottle will still be full. Good Luck!

The speedo shaft has a nylon gear on it that strips. There is another gear on the passenger side output shaft. You can pull just the pax side and change the gear/gears. It's a pain. I don't know if its worth it to fix the trans. You can change to a manual trans, but its considerable work also. Have you had a shop give you an estimate? That would be a good first step. Good Luck!

Everything went right in. Just make sure you remove the top Trans support when you are going back in with the lower engine mounts. I left it connected to help support the trans while the engine was out and it held the lower engine mounts about an 1" fwd of the holes. Once I pulled the bolt, life was good.

**Update** 5/20/04 passed Colorado Emissions test without a problem. I've driven it a couple of hundred miles and the ECU showed no codes. I like the combination very much and for a $125.00 for a used engine you can't go wrong! Just did a 2.5 to 2.2 swap on a 98 Legacy Outback. I'd picked up the 2.2 with 52K on it and then watched for a Outback that needed an engine. The swap went well (thanks CCR Inc. for the information). I only have to trace out the vac. lines, as there is one extra. Also will make some brackets for the power steering lines, as neither set will bolt up. Anyone need a 2.5 as a spare? Just pulled a 2.5 motor out of a 1998 Legacy Outback Wagon. It was missing on one cyc. The Shop thought it was a Head Gasket. Good Fixer, 109K was running fine other than the miss, when I pulled it. $550+shipping. Lmdew@hotmail.com

Is the coolant being drawn back into the radiator, when the engine cools? If not you have a leak somewhere, most likely the HG. A leaking HG will force the coolant into the recovery tank, but many times will not draw it back into the engine when it cools. Check the fluid at the rad. cap when its cool and see if its full. If not find the leak, HG or otherwise. Good Luck, Larry
