1980 GL Wagon "My quest for something different"
83subaruGLchick replied to Rallyru's topic in Members Rides
I love your build, so happy I got to meet you in person keep up the good work. Can’t wait till mine is cool like yours -
SIDE NOTE: My exhaust also broke off on the passenger side at the heads, the studs actually broke off of the head altogether...not quite sure how I'm going to fix that yet

Alright guys, I'll upload a few pictures here in a little bit of the trip as well but this last weekend I took the ol GL on quite a journey on this pretty hard trail to these very remote hot springs here in Nevada called the E Carson River Hot Springs I believe. REGARDLESS while the GL did fantastic now she needs some help before shes safely road worthy again. The following now needs immediate replacement: Tie rods, Ball Joints, Rack and Pinion Boots, CV Axles(front), and all the shocks aren't as important but they have been going out so I think I'm just going to do them now, while I have the rest of the suspension apart. That being said I'm going to do some research as well but should I just go OEM replacements with the shocks and struts? I plan to install a lift kit here soon and I have no desire to change my hubs to 5 lug so I mean that will fit OE because I like my drilled out original hubs to the 6X5.5 pattern Any advice you guys have will be greatly appreciated, like I said after this entry I'm going to do some digging of my own as well. Thank you!

This was the other day I drove it up a mountain we have here called Peavine. I flexed her out a little sadly the tire got so stuck in the front fender. I have big plans for this car I should be buying some goodies for it here soon and I’ll keep y’all updated!!!

About a week after I bought her back I drove it to Subiefest in Los Angeles from Reno, it did amazing it just overheated a little on the long hills but if you know these cars you know that’s a normal thing. I also had trimmed my fenders and I like the style that we decided to do it because you can’t tell really

Here she sits with the new shoes on!!! Okay so the guy that bought it from me then sold it back did these upgrades: center console\dash upgrade to install a voltmeter that works and a stereo fan shroud(I had installed an electric fan but never made a shroud) block heater(this thing HATES cold mornings and it gets cold here) 6 lug conversion fixed some miscellaneous broken interior trim replaced front seats LED headlights working gas struts on rear hatch

I hated the Toyota wheels so in about a days time I bought some 15X7 Cragar D windows from summit racing and went and got some 205/60/15 Mastercraft a Glacier-Grips II these are the only aggressive treads I could find in this size and honestly I love these tires so far not loud on the road and get great traction. This csr has no lift I just have the springs turned all the way up for now, a lift is coming soon

Fast forward 3 years from that first picture and this is the day I bought her back. I had sold the car for about a year because at the time I really needed money but I sold it to a guy that let me buy it back which I’m forever grateful. I was the one that put the roof rack and tint on, he did the lug conversion along with quite a bit else I’ll go over.

SORRY FOR THE HORRIBLE PICTURE QUALITY THEY DONT LET YOU UPLOAD GOOD QUALITY SHOTS

This is the day I first bought the GL. Bought it with 375K miles on it. Unsure if the the original motor or trans all I know. Is it is a 4 speed dual range and an EA81.

Hi! My names Ivy and I figured I should start a build page for my GL this way I can keep track of everything at the same time sharing it with all of you!! So a quick background on the car..I originally bought this car for $150 dollars out of Truckee CA, the guy I bought it from was building up a 2 door wagon and this was his daily driver while he built that. When I bought it the brakes made a horrible noise, the volt gauge didn’t work, the shifter has insane slop, no rear wiper, and that’s all I can remember right now. It was 100% stock and needed(still does) a lot of little things to make it all good again. It runs and drives, but like I said needs work.

I’d be very interested in knowing how much you’d get rid of the DOHC heads and intake manifold for. -
Largest tires w/o lift (trimming fenders)
83subaruGLchick replied to BRATATAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
1983 Subaru GL 15x7 wheels with 4 inch back spacing and 205/60/15 winter tires(wanted most aggressive tread possible) had to trim the front fenders because they stick out a little. LOVE HOW IT LOOKS -
Hello all!! Sorry if it’s already written up on here but I can’t seem to find it...I’m planning on lifting my GL Wagon soon and I’m going to replace the shocks and struts when I do so as well they’re pretty BAD. I found stock replacements but I’m wondering if anyone knows of an upgrade option even if it’s off of just another car....wany more of a coil over style in the front and the rear if that’s even possible. TIA
-
1983 Subaru GL stock height wheels are a 15x7 4 inch backspace and tires are a 205/60/15 which I believe are just short of 25 inches tall although they do stick out of the fender so I think that’s why I couldn’t go bigger and I had to trim on the back of the fender.

Not saying this is all of it, but these engines are also pretty dang gutless when it comes to hills, I have an EA81 as well and hills are hard for them. That aside the back firing and such does to me sound like its just choking on fuel, when timing is off it does not have that affect(as far as I know).

Heres my GL slowly getting better and better looking my instagram is @ivykathryn13 if anyone is interested! -
Hello all, I bought an older 83 a few months back and am fixing her up. I decided for the time being(who knows it might be permanent) that I'm going to run 4x140 to 5x100 adapters. There actually is a guy here locally in Reno Nevada that will make them for 280 dollars for all 4. If anyone on here is interested I can get you into contact with him. I got into contact with him because my friend that builds trucks here in town uses him for custom wheel spacer/adapters. Happy Subaruing!

4x140 to 5x100 bolt pattern adapters
83subaruGLchick replied to matts87glsedan's topic in Products for your Subaru
I desperately need these as well and would be able to pay for them if they can get shipped to 89431...Studs aren't a problem on my end. Thanks -
There aren't many options out there honestly, your best bet would be to get the 4x140 to 5x100 adapters or re-drill your hubs to the 6x5.5 I believe it is, unless you go through one of those companies that can custom make wheels. Let me know though if you find out there are still options on 4x140 out there.

Hello all, After reading through this as far as I understand you guys used GC8 Knuckles but XT6 calipers ETC. I have an 83 GL Wagon(4x4) and I have a 99 Impreza outback sport(AWD) the impreza has rear drums I was wondering if I can just use the complete set up from the 99 on my 83 because the 99 I'm parting out so luckily I have it just sitting right there with the parts ready to be swapped... TIA
