Have a problem on a fresh rebuild. Coolant is leaking into the oil from the block around the head stud. How do I seal the threads ? Loctite 243 ? or is there some other way to fix this. Any info would be great. Thanks

78 brat flywheel pilot bearing problem
DPM replied to DPM's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Radiator is out and I lifted the tranny up till the axel touched the steering assy. I will try using more grease and have a jack under the engine this time. Thanks -
78 brat flywheel pilot bearing problem

Yea I thing you a right. Matching the engine to the bell housing was more than a little struggle. I have done this before on other cars with no problems, so I assume this bearing needs more TLC. I'll try it again this weekend and be more gentle. Thanks for the in put. -
78 brat flywheel pilot bearing problem
DPM replied to DPM's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Your correct its the pilot bearing. I installed it using a socket on the outside edges. I assume that its made in japan because its a OEM subaru part but I will check when I get home. I don't think the bearing is a 40 year old part I think that part is still used on some of there late modle cars. Subaru part # 806212030. Thanks -
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but this is the second flywheel bearing that has gone bad on my 78 Brat. The first one came with the clutch set and it only lasted a few weeks before it started making noise. The next on I got from the dealer hoping it would last longer. I drove it about 10 miles and it is making noise. I pulled the engine last night and that bearing cage is off and there is grease on the clutch plate. Any ideas on how to keep this from happening? Thanks

Are heads interchangable on 1978 Brat?
DPM replied to DPM's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Sweet that hepls Thanks -
Hey guys I have assembled my EA-71 block with new pistons, rings, and bearings. Now I see that there is a crack in one of the heads. Is there a right and left, or can they swap. I looked them over and I don't see any differance. Thanks for any help.

This may be a dumb question, but I don't want to screw this up. I have a new cam shaft that I want to install on this re-build. I assume that you have to press the cam shaft out of the gear. Do I have to heat up the gear before I press it out? Thanks for any info.

I need a little help on a EA-71 rebuild. I split the case, had the cylinders punched .020 over, and the crank polished. All the bearings fit flush to the case except the thrust bearing. You can feel a high point on both bearings where they meet the case. Not sure what to do. Any sugestions would be great. Thanks

Does anyone have a picture or drawing for the firing order for the EA-71 engine ? I am trying to get mine to run, but I think the wires are wrong. The firing order is COUNTERCLOCKWISE 1,3,2,4. I'm not sure where #1 is located on the distributor. Any help would be great. Thanks

Hey guys This may be a dumd question, but why is the outside end of the axel drilled and tapped? Is it for install? Thanks

1978 subaru wagon 5 speed in Brat
DPM replied to DPM's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I went and looked at it and it looks the same as the 4 speed, but it does have 5 shift positions and a reverse and the 4WD shift lever. Should I buy it? Thanks -
Have a question about a 5 speed transmission from a 1978 wagon. Will it fit into a 1978 Brat? The guy selling it says it will, but I an new to this so I want to be sure. Thanks for all of your help.
