  1. So I just finished putting my engine in my 1987 GL wagon. Mounted the Weber adapter and got it buttoned up. She fired right up, and then steam. Water was pouring out of the carb adapter front screw. Took it all apart, and sure enough the previous owner drilled too deep right into the coolant passage. Is there any way to fix this without buying another intake manifold? Somebody please help!!!
  2. Best part of felpro permatorque is no need for retorque. I'd replace all the head bolts. They are $2.40 a piece. For less than $44 it's good insurance to make sure a head does not lift. Also if you do the headbolts, grind slots in an old bolt to make a thread chaser. Finding a thread chaser is next to impossible for a Subaru thread
  3. Rock Auto has good parts, when cross checked. I bought alot of better ea82 parts for cheaper than what I would have spent at AutoZone. I even got a free Camry timing belt once and I don't own a Camry! Customer service has always been great and half the time I get my parts the next day because I live 2.5 hours from the distribution center. I think we need a part and part number thread just for rock auto! This way we can add what has (only worked) for our suby.
  4. Felpro permatorque for gaskets. Use only Subaru intake Manifold gaskets and cam tower o rings. Easy job make sure engine is warmed up to avoid breaking bolts like I did
  5. I'm with dee2. I had #1 spark plug wire hooked up at #2 and vice versa. It started, Ran and then died. After looking at my trusty (untrusty) Haynes book I realized plug one was front passenger bank, and number 2 was front driver plug. Simple fix. Also be sure you set ignition timing between 14-20°. Factory is 8 weber carbed subies like 14-20 depending on elevation. Remember when setting ignition timing the vacuum lead to the distributor must be unhooked. Also make sure you put fresh gas in. Good luck and let us know!
  6. The three timing marks are on the flywheel. There's an Access cover right behind the intake manifold. Should be a rubber cover. Pull that and rotate engine till you fine 3 lines grouped together with no numbers. The numbered lines are for the distributor timing. The in marked three lines are for the timing belt timing
  7. I would be looking for a major vacuum leak and also make sure timing belts did not jump. One tooth off mine wouldn't fire. Check the codes as dee2 said. Sorry about your trip but I'm glad to see another suby owner headed to Arizona, I'm in prescott up north of phoenix by two hours.

  9. Thanks for the prompt response. I do see what you are saying now.
  10. So I bought the subaru with the heads already off. I have long and short bolts. Was told short go in the middle. Which holes are considered middle? Anybody have a picture or drawing? Was told not to put short bolt in long bolt hole because it will strip.trying to do this once and right the first time. Thanks in advance
  11. I had similar problem. Had to replace all vacuum hoses and put a genuine subaru pcv valve in. Also make sure the idle stop screw is adjusted just right. To top it off I had to set the ignition timing, which a lot of mistakes are made doing that as the vacuum hose has to be plugged that is going to the distributor.
  12. There are timing marks with numbers and three individual linea seperated. You need to line up on the 3 small lines. Do back belt first. Turn engine to middle of three timing lines. Install rear belt with timing dot straight up with mark on timing cover. Rotate engine one full turn. Now rear belt timing dot will be facing down. Install front belt dot straight up with timing cover marks. Rotate engine again and it should be aligned
  13. Yeah its great especially for new manual trans drivers. I found a diagram I will be taking pictures as I do it. Hopefully I can get it to work
  14. I would by a direct Subaru intake manifold gasket. Before I bought this car off my friend he went through 3 sets. I bought some from my subaru dealer for him and they worked without a flaw. If the surface is flat on a machined part to a machined part then sealant should not be needed
  15. I am going to connect the hill holder on my car as my wife will be driving it and she needs some help on the steep hills here in northern Arizona. How do I up hook this bad boy up? I know cable from clutch for to holder mechanism and that's about it. Is there supposed to be a bracket to hold the cable from moving around? Is there supposed to be a spring to help the mechanism go back? Any pictures and any advice would be great.thanks in advance
  16. So it has began. I bought this 1987 GL off a friend for $250. Engine had cracked heads (into the valve seats), a copy weber swap (ran good for a copy, even with cracked heads) and interior is covered in grease from him not caring. So as of right now I have the intake manifold water passage welded closed, a weber 3236 knockoff, and the heads are being milled and a valve job done as I am typing. I also got all new head bolts and bolt washers. I used an old bolt to make a chaser and clean the threads. Engine block still has cross hatching and not out of round so bottom end isn't being messed with. Felpro gasket set with subaru factory o rings and intake manifold gaskets. So hopefully over the weekend I will have get started. Here she is.
  17. Mr2 electric pump may work as long as you limit pressure and also have power steering cooler. Then you need a Power rack to work. Then custom linkages. This all can add up to over $1500 real quick.
  18. I noticed you did not mention a water pump, has this been replaced? Mine did the same, sluggish and got hot on hills. I timed mine to 10° btdc and also had to replace water pump. Make sure your heater hoses are all correct, and the heat issue seems vacuum related to the controller. Also use only distilled water as hard water can take only days to build deposits, especially in over heating situations. Think of boiling water in an all stainless pan until its gone, residue builds up as the water evaporates.
  19. Finally 6 months after buying my suby, I am almost ready to assemble. For the head gaskets, does the blue on the felpro head gaskets go up or down? Might seem dumb to ask, but those were a pretty penny. Next, I want to give the sources I used for my parts. Rock auto.com- felpro head gaskets-can't remember number, somebody help me out here. 1stsubaruparts.com-- short head bolt #800211060, long headbolt-#800211050, headbolt washers-#803011070 Ill add more later. Just know head bolts cannot be ordered at autozone and want to help others out
  20. I am buying a revolution electronics fuel pump control unit. $70 and its definitely safer. Ran one in an old kit car. Has a relay for pump, shuts off when coil shuts off. Also can be used with a ford inertia switch so it kills fuel if involved in an accident that doesn't kill the engine. Pricey yes, but a neck of a lot better than fuel dumping everywhere and being a fire cause
  21. Your timing is way off if engine rpms drop below 700. Get a timing light and time it. Disconnect vacuum to distributor and move until it reads 8° btdc.
  22. I got new ones ordered, dee2 provided accurate part numbers and match perfect. I know to clean Block with a thread chaser as original bolt holes are gunked up. I also always oil my bolts before installing. Thanks for the help peoples!
  23. No parts stores carry them. Auto zone, O'Reilly or napa. Im hoping for a Subaru part number lol
