  1. So my head bolts are pretty rough. Does anybody have a part number for new bolts? Will I just have to use a thread chaser and clean them up? Can I retrofit different ones?( not logical but still possible) thanks for the input
  2. I have done oil in cylinders on countless subarus vws and even a couple Porsche engines, they all were spot on for the dead cylinders. Leakdown test is the best way, I agree but oil test is simpler. Just trying to help him out.
  3. Do it the easy way. Put 1-2 tablespoons of oil in the spark plug hole for cylinder not reading. Do compression test on that cylinder immediately. If compression rises you have bad rings, piston to wall gaps ECT and that cylinder needs repaired. Next if doesnt go up, do a leak down test and listen closely for air. It could be a head gasket, could be valves, could be timing belt jumped and not closing valves.
  4. Send me a spare set of you have a couple Subaru Scott! Lol
  5. Rock Auto I bought for $140 shipped. I installed, bled it and the handling is crisp compared to the old leaking stock rack. Just needs an alignment and we will be good to go
  6. Find a good set of heads. Machine work for heads can be pricey. I paid $150 for a good set
  7. Wire up choke using the old electric choke wire, it just needs a 12v switched power. Did you set idle stop screw? What are your idle jets? It sounds like the throttle stop is screwed in all the way, keeping it revved up.
  8. I will second mis-matched tires as well. My gl had similar symptoms, and all it was was the hill holder and also the parking brake hold up one caliper. The parking brakes are on the front so this could explain turning left
  9. Hey that's good, glad I could help. I always have to adjust that thing its a pain but it helps when I am teaching somebody to drive a manual, that way I know they won't roll back into somebody/something
  10. And then there's ways my personal favorite of car not moving when being pushed and in neutral, check the hill holder cable adjustment! It acts like a brakes are locked up because that's what it does, doesn't allow the car to roll back on hills meaning it locks the brakes
  11. Hey I had same problem. Linkage binded. I put a spacer bearing on the throttle shaft then put the throttle wheel on. It doesn't bind at all any more. After this I have t idling perfect and full throttle movement.
  12. I second the weber. In my high 5200 ft elevation I gained 4mpg and way more power to get through the mountains. If you do it right it is possible to keep all the emissions and pass, just make the original carb hat work with the weber. If its the carb, even rebuilt ones suck.
  13. How long again did you drain the tank? If things are gummed up then get a good fuel cleaner that aids in softening up things and cleaning them. If the car has been sittih for months on end, then the gas can be bad and that can make it hesitate.I did the same thing on my Chevy, inspected tested and replace only to find the gas was old
  14. I would do the easy test and open the oil drain plug and see if you get a milkshake looking oil
  15. I can't get the sound clip to play. The good news is lifters are available still. I'd pull the heads, get them cleaned milled and a valve job if necessary and new lifters. All the work including lifters ($10 a piece at rock auto) should be $300 max
  16. Is the sound hollow like hitting two PVC pipes together fast ( this would be bearings and rods hitting the engine block) or is it solid like a hammer striking concrete really fast?(this noise would be valvetrain related)? I'll try to get a video of my impreza up, it has a good rod knock to let you hear the sound of hollow knock
  17. Engine is a simple removal. I have never done it and since my car came with bad heads i decided i would pull it. Takes about 2.5 hours the first time. That means labeling everything and being uber care cautious. I hope you don't have the lifter tick of death
  18. If I have Scott redrill I can get a tire from like a Nissan hardbody pickup that should fit. Its a 195-75-14. That tire height is 25.6 inches. I don't need ultra big. My rescue truck is big, that's for the hard trails. My subs are going to be desert rats
  19. 13" rims with 175-70-13 tires. I really want some 14" wheels with light truck tires. Diamond racing wheels will get them for me, or I can have Scott do a 6 lug and find any size at the salvage yard
  20. I will take some engine pics after this weekend for the build process. The spare engine for the gf wagon will be getting a new timing kit and water pump before it is installed. The ea82 wagon is getting newer heads, felrpo gasket set, already new timing kit, weber 3236( replica but ran great). O eventually want a 2" lift and some 14 or 15" wheels and tires. I have a Chevy truck that is my wheeling truck but the sub's will be for the desert small trails
  21. Here's a few exterior of the wagons.
  22. Got a 1987 GL wagon d/r 4x4 ea82. Engine was in n pieces since its heads were cracked. I know it was running before I bought it because it was my friends. I have a the water passage welded and a weber 3236 carb and a 7mm spacer to clear PS and the hood closes!. Got new heads (thanks whirly), and plan on getting her running in The next 2 weeks. I will post up pictures tomorrow of her and her little sister which is my wife's 1995 GF8 Impreza
  23. Thanks Dave. Everything bolts up great. Have a carbed intake manifold all ready to go. I think I just might have to sell my new asv plates lol
