85 Brat Transmission Swap
ajslacker replied to ajslacker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I do have the separate center console and I already took that out. I'm probably just going to take as much as possible and use what I need and junk what I don't need. It actually has two ea82 engines one in the bay and another in the back. I'm guessing they were going to replace?? -

I have an 85 Brat with the 3AT. I also have an 89 GL parts car with a 5 speed D/R. I want to put the 5 speed into the brat but, I have to get rid of the GL by this weekend, so i wanna pull the transmission and other stuff I need. My question is what do I need to pull from the car for the swap? If the list is somewhere on here just post the link. If not please help!

Thanks to everyone for the help. I'll be working on it everyday after work except Saturday because it's supposed to snow. I'll just keep working at it and maybe eventually I'll get to drive it.

My oil pump shattered and it's stuck in the engine. Here's the back story: I was replacing the oil pump in my 85 Brat when, while removing the old one from the engine, I turn around for a second and my dumb friend decides to use a mallet to get it out. The oil pumps are know to shatter and naturally it did. Unfortunately the worse case scenario came true and part of it is stuck in the engine still. It will spin but refuses to come out. I've tried everything. I even drilled a screw in it so I had something to pull. Any suggestions?? Pics attached https://ibb.co/foXbjx https://ibb.co/hbnnrc https://ibb.co/dMoABc https://ibb.co/mPqe4x

I installed the new distributor and after a little coaxing it started up but promptly died. It will start without me having to hit the gas pedal or anything and will idle smoothly for about 8 seconds then it starts backfiring and it dies. What exactly is the sound the fuel pump makes? Mine is a Spectre replacement i got off of parts geek.

Well it started for a few seconds when i put gas straight into the carb. Both fuel filters and the fuel pump are all new what would cause it to not get fuel? -

It has spark. I checked it by getting someone else to turn it over while I held all the sparks to metal. Im spraying a little carb cleaner into the carb and it doesn't make a difference. ???? -
85 EA81 Brat New Weber Carb New fuel pump Both New fuel filters New ignition coil New battery Brand new Distributor New sparkplugs gapped at .44 New spark plug wires. (Correctly ordered on the cap) New Distributor cap and rotor New PCV valve Timing is correct (checked nine times) New exhaust Did a compression test and it was good. Don't remember the numbers though Still won't start. I don't know why. Any advice or help?
-
No I understand that, I'm talking about doing two different kind of distributors/carburetors for the same engine is kinda dumb.
-
Ya I don't know why car manufacturers do that kind of stuff. So the one i have a link of is right? Just to be sure

Ok I will check for power at the coil tomorrow and found a refurbished distributor. Is this the right distributor for an EA81 Hitachi carb/distributor Brat? I ordered a cap and rotor from them before and it didn't fit, so I don't want that happening again. https://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/MC/322-07003437.html?utm_content=MC&utm_term=1981-1987+Subaru+Brat+Ignition+Distributor+A1+Cardone+31-810+81-87+Subaru+Ignition+Distributor+1983+1984&fp=pp&gbm=a&utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1JbPBRCrARIsAOKj2PlvvW9CSahNkLg2xXQaYVXN60mdBpujE9aQP1vnTaB1NL4LYb2Sy2IaAkxCEALw_wcB&ad=47584901292

Yes it does turn. I checked it

Alright i'll check tomorrow. I showed my shop teacher the movement in the disty and it does move enough side to side that blades of the piece that rotates hits the pieces of metal on the top. He said it might be enough to make it spark incorrectly and not start. No contradicting what you all said, just saying what he thinks.
-
I believe so. How do i check?

I have an 85 Brat that isn't getting spark. New plugs, new plug wires, new ignition coil, new disty cap and rotor. I pulled out the distributor and noticed the distributor shaft has about 1/8 inch vertical play and 1/16 horizontal play. Is that too much on both sides? Do I need to replace the whole distributor? Could that be why it doesn't start? Any info is appreciated.

I have a weberized 85 Brat with the 3 speed auto transmission. After a couple months I finally got it running. It idles kinda rough and i have to keep the timing fully retarded (literally) or it will stall out, but it does idle. I believe that there are no vacuum leaks so it shouldn't be that. My main problem is that it idles at about 1K and revs fine, but as soon as its put in gear the RPMs drop to about 500 and it splutters and shakes. If i give it any gas at all while its in drive or reverse it dies, no matter what i do. It seems as soon as a load is being put on the tranny/engine it dies. Does anybody know what would be causing this?

EA81 Brat Still won't start. Help!
ajslacker replied to ajslacker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I probably am gonna see if I can get lucky first and find one at a junkyard. Are there any aftermarket ones on ebay or whatever? -

I bought the car on Craigslist for 500 bucks. It wasn't running because of a bad carb, among other things. I might have screwed up the distributor timing at some point idk. Here's some pics of the Fuel pump control unit. It looks a little corroded on some points but if it got water damage I doubt I could fix it. https://ibb.co/cHhHz5 https://ibb.co/c0QRsQ https://ibb.co/m3wMRk https://ibb.co/kZc6sQ -

ajslacker replied to ajslacker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have developed a theory. I read up things that could make it not get fuel correctly and stumbled upon the fuel pump control unit. The little black or grey box that is on top of the hood latch. In a related story my windshield leaks, which is something I will fix later. When I went to check out the FPCU it had water in and on it from the rain. This has to be it. Unfortunately there are expensive and hard to find online. So im gonna try and find one from a parts car. I will send a pic of it after work, but its a little black box with a Mitsubishi logo on it. Any idea what the part number is for it? -
EA81 Brat Still won't start. Help!
ajslacker replied to ajslacker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ya that's what im thinking but the entire fuel setup is new. (Pump and filters) It does squirt fuel into the carb when i move the throttle wheel because I can see and hear it. Is it possible some stupid safety feature or something is not allowing the fuel pump to well...pump? The car will not come close to starting unless I put carb cleaner in it or if i pump the hell outta the gas pedal... -
