Hi Mike thanks for your reply.....I had posted this problem on a forester specific site in Australia and received a reply saying that there is no sensor on the early foresters from a subaru mechanic

Steve Siladi Very early type. Lots of ecu failures back in 98 with them. When removing the crank sproket dont damage the teeth
