I have a 2001 Forester with 85k on it. Bot it used 2 yrs ago. Very happy with it. Expect to need to replace the front 02 sensor. Have the dealer put in their coolant additive to extend your HG warranty to 100k miles. You are probably about due for the passenger front axle to be replaced also as the inner boot cracks every 5 yrs due to exhaust pipe heat. Use these reasons to bargain him down to $7500.

Brilliant suggestion to use the old wire boot as a hand tightening guide before applying the the ratchet. Wish I had not thrown my old wires out! I ended up just gently hand tightening with the 4" extension without the ratchet on it to be sure I wasn't cross-threading.

Are you getting any CEL codes thrown? You can pretty easily change the basic stuff like fuel filter, plugs and wires yourself for a start to see if that cures the misfire. Is it when engine is only cold or only warm or all of the time? Or intermittent? give us more specific observations.

I agree, I think this is the normal quirk of the car's transmission design. My 2001 Forester 5spd MT is the herky-jerkiest car I have owned. I still like it, willing to deal with it.

That first gen Tribecca is ugly. But look at the bright side, it will probably get better from here. I just wish Subaru would learn from Toyota.....they offered the Rav for years with YOUR CHOICE of either 2wd or 4wd. I would LOVE for my 2001 Forester to have just fwd.

1982 GL Wagon. 132k miles, and she's fast cuz she's a RED one! 36 mpg routinely on flatland. She is trying to rust out on us, but we won't let her, cuz my bro the mechanic says this engine will simply NEVER die.

My 2001 Forester had its clutch replaced due to slipping at 75k because the previous owner rode the clutch too much. Cars that I have owned never get clutch replaced. But then, I am flatlanding and not towing, no heavy loads etc.

Hmmm, interesting thread. Now that you mention it, I bot my 2001 Forester used, 2 yrs ago. It has 84k on it and no sunroof. I noticed the head of the bolt and front bracket that holds the driver's seat to the floor were rusty. I sort of watch it to see if I ever spot puddling etc, never do see any. I have painted the bracket with rust-preventer paint. I chalked it up to the previous owner's getting in and out of car in rainy/snowy weather with wet boots.... Who knows?

THis brings up a good point. One car got both HG's replaced under warranty...even tho only one HG was leaking. The other car only got the leaky HG replaced. Any consensus on: 1) Whether the car SHOULD get both HGs replaced at same time no matter what? 2) Whether dealers will make you pay for the replacement of the ok HG if you ask them to do it at the same time? thx.
