Chevy Small Block questions
Qman replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
This has two options. One is obvious, rebuild the original motor with the original intake and either rebuild the carb or get a OEM replacement. Option two. Remove the original motor and place it in the corner of the garage, under cover. Place a crate motor in it with a basic Edelbrock intake and carb of your choice. I prefer Holley but others do not. Considerring he has already stated that high performance isn't his thing. Keep it simple and it will be very enjoyable for him. -
The rust looks to be migrating inward. The running gear, 5 lug stuff and other doodads are well worth the $500. It may not be too bad underneath either.

They sold the Justy didn't they. J/K This debate is so old. The bottom line is the aftermarket parts usually do not work as well as the oem replacement. Thermostats especially. I have found over the years that PCV valves are another part that does not usually work as well from an aftermarket source. Use what ever part you are comfortable with but do not complain too loudly if it goes bad prematurely. Or doesn't work right to begin with. I will continue to buy the OEM replacement for most of my parts. Internet pricing is usually cheaper than at the parts counter. Try to order your parts from a good online source like Jason @ Scarff Subaru in Auburn or Jamie @ Subarugenuineparts. You can say "Ken sent you" to both of them when talking to them on the phone. And be sure to ask for "internet pricing".

Talk to Steve at Pacific Import Auto. They are the shop of choice for most in the South sound. Steve has been working on Subaru's for over 30yrs. He knows the product as well or better than anyone I know. Anyone I send to Steve is taken care of with respect and always returns for their next service need. They are not just a performance shop. They can handle all of the needs of the average owner for recommended periodic service as well. Pacific Import Auto 13311 Pacific Ave. Tacoma, WA 98444 ph. 253.536.0389

Here's the equation so some may better understand. $40k for a STi. Add $30K in mods for Bigger turbo, bullet proof bottom end and forged internals, meth injection, etc. $1K for head and turbo work. Oh yeah that is hella affordable. The difference between old HP and new HP is night and day. A boost controller is cheap. But beefing up the motor so it doesn't detonate isn't. I can direct you to many who have tried to build cheap hp for the old EA's. It just doesn't work without dealing with the whole package. I'm not tryng to beat anyone up or belittle anyone either. It is just a different ball game when dealing with big power.

Stock spec cams will do nothing for you. That's why I asked about your intended use. You need to call Delta (Toll Free: 1.800.562.5500) and ask for a set of torque grind cams for the EA82. Start with SPFI blanks and have them grind those. It will work better. Talk to Jon and tell him Ken told you to call him. Tell him exactly what I wrote and he'll hook you up with what you need. Are you using a 32/36 or a 38 for your Weber? What diameter is the exhaust? That thing is nuts! I would suggest that you add in a diagonal brace to your hoop. It will add structural integrity to the design and better protect you in the event of a sideways rollover. I would also add some straight bracing from the upper corners of the hoop to the windshield. Better safe than sorry. Looks like fun though.

Actually Brian, that is affordable horsepower. But then are you happy with your 150 BHP? I have seen over 500whp STi's that are just flat nuts. Cams give them the option of even more power at the bottom end where turbo's fail. Can I direct you to the little triangle shaped box with the exclamation point in it? If you have a problem with a post use that to alert mods and admins. That would be our jobs! And we are more than happy to deal with that so you can go about surfing the website. You might be surprised how many STi lurkers we have. We don't all buy old EA's. Glad you decided to edit... He wasn't advertising so much as letting the new gen know. There will be many articles to come. Jon gets very excited about his products. I wish more vendors of performance parts(for all Subarus) were this passionate about their jobs and products. Now, thanks to McBrat, it is in the vendor forum and you guys can go about your business.

There are three profiles for the EA82c Carb, SPFI and turbo. I would need to know what you are using the engine for primarily. The cam is important depending on usage. There are also aftermarket alternatives as well. Let us now.

I may have to go south. It won't get cancelled but it will be wet.
