This is completely true... on a vehicle that is not maintained properly. Sorry folks but this is fact. An engine that is not maintained properly will leak oil, water, blow headgaskets, etc. Once an engine is overheated ALL the seals should be replaced. I have done many reseals over the years. Most have not had any issues after said reseals. Most times gaskets get replaced by people who do not have "extra" money to do the job right. Bottom line is this. Just because it is an EA82 does not mean it will or has to leak oil. Fix it right and it will not leak oil. Depending on how you drive it though it will use oil. I have zero leaks on my EJ25 and I go through about 1-2 quarts per oil change. Drive it hard around redline most of the time. :-\ So, yes, you can replace the seals, o-rings and gaskets and keep the oil where it belongs. It doesn't have to cost thousands to be dry!

WOW! Doom and gloom. 1. The coil does indeed get weaker over time. As does any electronic device. Aftermarket ones are indeed viable replacements. They do work well with Subarus. I have replaced every coil in all of my EA and ER equipped Subarus. I have not heard of any bad coils lately. Accel had a run of bad chromies a few years back. Maybe you should start a thread asking how many people are running aftermarket coils. Might surprise you on the results. 2. TOD, many long-winded articles have been written on this subject. And, a lot of bad info has been given over the years. Two things cause this(as Gary wrote). Bad oil pumps or seals. Weak or bad HVLA. Hydraulic lifters do not go bad very often. The TOD is caused by low oil pressure. This can be repaired by replacing the oil pump or by the seals, in most cases. However, this does not always solved the problem. I each head-cam assy there is a small spring and check ball. This allows the lifters to pump up before sending oil to the rest of the head. If this spring weakens the pressure will not be reached and the lifters will tick. You can order a new spring or try to "stretch" the old one slightly. Beware that you can overstretch the spring and cause it to need too much pressure. Seafoam does work as an internal cleaner. Follow the directions on the can. It works in the engine and the fuel system to clean out the gunk that plagues. 3. Cats, another long-winded subject. Again reaping loads of bad advice from those with no clue. You can replace cats. You can replace two cats with one high-flow cat. You can swap in a "test-pipe". But it will not regulate the emissions. My Imoreza has a catless system and will not pass sniffer. Add the stock cats and it has almost zero emissions. I am not getting into the enviromental side of this as I will not be hypocritical(sp). For a non-registered vehicle I assume it will be used offroad only. Hope this helps clear up some of the myths.

Sorry Jared, as of right now, I am out.

Funny you should ask. Zap asked me if i had aired down yet. I was at 20psi at the time and you couldn't tell .

Nice shots guys. I had a good time as well. Nice meeting some new people. Looks like the Hatch Patrol mentality will live on!! No pics from me though. (Dead batteries)

Yes, it is a stock item. Many have had it. I have had about 5+ that had it. Looks to be in pretty good shape for sitting in the yard. Does it run?

Very nice!

And thanks to that Rubicon I got the broken taillight to prove it! If that Toyota got buried to the frame I doubt too many 'roo's will be going to the wall.

'98 and later Outbacks are roomier. By this time they should have had the headgaskets done along with the timing belts. We just got a '98 and love it. I do not understand why anyone would swap a 2.2 for a 2.5 though. We now have 3 2.5's in our family and have had zero problems!

'Yota...Subaru needs repair...still :-\ Besides, I hear that the wall trail is a bit tougher than before. That is where I want to go while we are up there.

Starts hard, runs rough, ECS lite on, runs great

Sounds like a temp sensor. The computer is for the feed-back carb. Fix the problem. Check the codes for other issues as well. -
Why can't things last forever
Qman replied to woundedbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Chances are the small plastic retaining clip broke. Biggest problem will be getting the panel off. Takong the seat out will help. You may be able to get a replacement clip throogh a auto body paint supply shop. If it is the clip they should be the same as the EA82 cars. You will have to tear into it to find the true problem. -
HNY to all and bring on WCSS10!

Sadly, the "ride" is over...
Qman replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So, basically, you're dropping this back into the hands of the person who sold it to you. That is BS! Contact the apt complex or just look for the tow company signs posted in said complex. It is not OK to have a car impounded that you bought and did not fullfill your responsibility by tranferring the title. I sure hope they have proof of sale and can throw this back on you! Yes, I too have had lowlifes pull this on me. Step up and take the responsibilty for this! -
1988 Gl Value Part 2/pics
Qman replied to silverracerkh2005's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry Tim, looks like you get me instead! This whole saga smells of BS. I am not faulting you for putting that much money into a Loyale. But to brag about it is rediculous. It also sounds like this isn't the first time you have been called out. How about taking a different approach to the forum and try settling in before you try to impress those who have actually rebuilt/restored the vehicles from the ground up. When I saw rust repair I expected to see holes at least. Clearing surface rust has been done by just about everyone here. I will not beat you up in public like others have done(this time). Just try to fit in. One rump roast in the family is enough! -
Maybe you should have before making a rediculous statement. Start your own thread and leave the OP's thread alone!

People fear the 2.5 motor. They probably shouldn't now though. In the early years they were prone to bad headgaskets at or around 100K(some sooner) That has been remedied with an updated headgasket. I have 3 2.5 liter cars in my family now and love them. Most of the information you have been getting is good(most of it is most of the time). The early Legacy is the best platform to start with for room and comfort. The Impreza is very good as well. The early 2.2 motor(up through '96) is a non-interference motor. Meaning if the timing belt breaks the motor is not destroyed. After that they changed to an interference design. Still not an issue if you follow the suggested maintenance intervals. The Legacy Outbacks will give you the most bang for the buck. The early ones will be up to $5K +/- 1K for a good low mile one. The 2nd gens will be up to 8K for a good one that has had all services done to it. The Outback sports are all good. They all run 2.2 motors and are available in manual or automatic. The sports are not raised like the Leggy Outbacks. Something to consider. They are slightly smaller outside but still provide enough room for a larger person. I am 6'4" and 230lbs and fit fine in them. Whatever you decide on should be a good experience for you as long as you do your research and have the vehicle checked out prior to purchasing. And for all the new gen haters. Realize that it may not have a D/R in the states. It does not have the classic lines of old. But it does have more power and creature comforts for those who have matured and want a little more out of life. Good luck with your quest!
