EA82 overheat - hypothetical....
Qman replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You really shouldn't be able to hear it "spinning up". Check for looseness(bearings) and freeplay(easy to spin). -
*...Need Help! Brat Stolen!!...*
Qman replied to bakerman1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No they did not. However, (not sure if this is the one) but Ken has an EJ powered Brat. I don't remember if they added the AWD or kept the D/R. Glad to hear that all ended well even though it cost a few(many) bucks to recover it. -
EA82 overheat - hypothetical....
Qman replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There are two types of waterpumps. One has a cast impeller and one has a pressed and formed one. The cast one is the hit. The only other issue may be in the clutch fan if it is still equipped. -
Even more amazing is seeing the same things get said over and over.

I don't recall the ratio but the .035" sounds about right. Ideally, you want to measure a roll of dimes. You'll see that they differ by as much as .010".

Not true. EJ22T harnesses will work for the conversion. Need to add a couple extra wires and it's good to go. David, if you are considerring this swap you really need to talk with someone who has done it. Not those who think they know the answers. If you are serious and need info and people to talk to pm me for that info.

I did post about shims back when I built the ER27. Shim thickness does matter as if you go to thick the pushrod runs the risk of bottoming out. I did use dimes for my shims and told Delta about it. Chuck Sand told me about the dimes as he used them in his XT6's as well. So, when Delta tells you that they get used in race engines they are speaking the truth. Get a roll of dimes and a caliper to measure with. Get 16 dimes that are the same thickness. You will find that a roll of dimes produce about 3 or 4 different thicknesses. Find them install them and forget about them. They do not move once you install them but make sure that you do not go too thick as the oil cavity will not line up and that will cause issues with oiling. Good luck, look into some sort of engine management as well. Are you still running mega squirt?(iirc) Note, They do not just regrind the cams for the EA82's. They weld up the lobe and grind the back side down the same amount as they build up the front. The cam case is the reason for this. If they just regrinded them the lift would not change and you wouldn't get much increase in duration either.

All EA82's use the same tank. Yes, trans and crossmember, driveshaft, rear diff, axleshafts, rear hubs and brakes, rear shocks. Now the swap is actually pretty easy. You just disconnect the brakes lines and driveshaft and remove the whole rear sub frame. Something like 16 bolts I believe and it will be sitting on the ground. The electrics will need to be added for the trans. Change the shifter and it should be ready to go. Now all of this depends on how easy the bolts come out. Considerring your location it may be a bigger challenge to get the bolts out than it will be to do the swap. You will want to also swap the front axleshafts and struts(4wd is heavier duty than 2wd). Have fun

They were used for 4 of my Subaru motors. Two 1.8 OHV motors, an ER27 and an EJ25. All had excellent results. Tell them(Scott and John) that Ken sent you. You'll pay the same price(which is low for custom cams) but they'll make sure you get what you need. They have sponsored my rallyx'ers and have been part of the West Coast Subaru Show for 3yrs now.

Some of your statement is right but not all is accurate. Being that I have also had both designs that are being discussed. The "hollow" blocks that you speak of are strong 1/4" steel blocks. They will bend however. Do not believe that they won't. I have bent 1/4" blocks, Broken bolts and pulled out captive nuts(that was due to rusty undercarraige though). The only way to insure against breaking something offroad is to stay on the pavement. Oh, and not driving like Rick. I saw your car and I can't believe you drove it back home that way. Must have been a fun ride to say the least.

Freeing it may be the easy part. You will probably have to remove the head to fix it. It can be done in the car but increases the difficulty level 10 fold. You'll need to check the valve guide for damage as well. Or the alternative method would be to lightly rap the end of the valve and try to dislodge the valve. This may be a result of high revs or weak springs. You may be able to temporarily unstick it but it should be taken apart to repair it properly.

8 bolts as Mr Northwet has stated. The case is sealed as well as bolted. Gently place a screwdriver or small pry bar between the case and head. Key word here is gently. You will see a couple places you will be able to apply pressure to seperate them. This happened to my bro-in-law once. He had a stuck valve and the rocker fell off. Good luck with it. NOTE: Make sure all bolts are removed before attempting this as the case will break.

super ultimate hp gain ground wire?
Qman replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
LOL, funny, people all have an opinion about grounding. While most will agree that grounding is good. How much is a good thing is the question that remains to be debated. I have run those "extra" ground kits before. While 12 hp is a stretch. Better spark and freer flowing current has to add something. And if I want more HP I will just add a couple of decals!! -
exhaust making a puttering sound
Qman replied to cndymyfrnd's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Carb is not the problem! FI only in '93. Know your product before you give advice. Chances are the belt(s) is off by a tooth. That or the timing was set incorrectly. There is a procedure for setting the timing other than just adjusting the distributor. Who did the work? Were they a Subaru shop? -
Using Diesel to increase octane ratings...
Qman replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Maybe in the south that math would work. We in the PNW have 3 tanks at our stations. Better yet, maybe you could show us some documentation to that effect. -
Using Diesel to increase octane ratings...
Qman replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I too have been really broke and thought I might save by using lower grade fuel. Never diesel or kerosene and wouldn't. Those are both used for cleaning parts and maybe, just maybe, that is the benefit of using either one. Go read some octane boosters in the parts store and see what they are made up of. Think of this though, @ $.20 a gallon for a fill up of 10 or even 20 gallons is only saving $4.00. Is it worth the frustration and poor performance? -
Nope, not Skip.

I am beginning to think that my DSL modem acting up may have been the best thing to happen to me. Thank you all for the accolades and the criticism! I have some things to say. Both good and bad. First the good. This years Vendors and Sponsors were top notch. Subaru West, John Hubach came up big for us once again. The Outback Angler for his chile and all the others who helped with that. Prodrive/Worldone, wow, what can I say about them. Gave everyone that purchased their merchandise an excellent discount(25%). Not to mention the really nice set of wheels that they let us raffle off. Audio Integrations, it was a pleasure to meet you and have you here. The enclosures are sweet. And thanks for the pod for the raffle. Kakumae(sp?) for bring us some very nice pieces to check out and letting us know where to get them. Pacific Import Auto, for the m/cyl bracket and lightweight pulley. Mike Scarff's Auburn Subaru and Chaplins Subaru, Thanks you for your contributions as well. Superior Import Repair, thanks for the shirts!! Rallitek, thanks for the trophy/plaques! Delta Cams, for the shirts and decals. I hope I didn't forget anyone. While this years show was very difficult to put on for many different reasons. It seemed to come off as one of the more memorable ones. Many people are to blame(thank) for it. Eric, for without you it wouldn't have come together. I wasn't able to manage the new dayshift and ALL the planning and you stepped up big for me. Thank you. I know it was difficult and very tiring. Corky, once again you provided an excellent service for all of those people who took advantage of the early registration. Considerring what you had to deal with during that time you stepped up huge. Thank you. And yes, you are right. Ann, Linda and Bob all put things into perspective for me. They all have a permanent spot in my heart. And also showed me just how twisted we all are. Ed, probably the single biggest reason we all managed to continue this. Your words of encouragement and willingness to do whatever was needed at the moment dramatically show the goodness in your heart. I thank you. John Alley, these simple words can not truely signify my feeling but I will try. First, for those who do not know John I am sorry. He is the person I always look forward to talking to no matter how I am feeling. Every conversation I have with him makes me a better person just for hearing it. All of us that know him will agree. But, as for the show. Without John's help and assistance this Hood River show would have been just another meet and greet. John is the biggest reason Hood River is such a great place to visit. He does so many things behind the scenes that it is hard to describe how valuable he is. He always makes the right decision for our needs while keeping the best interest of the park as well. John, Thank you for all your help and for just being our friend. Richie and Lisa, Tex and Monica, thanks for just being there. You made it better for me and everyone else. The bigggest thanks has to go to our families. Not only do they put up with our hobby/obsession all year but then once a year they have to deal with this event. And tolerate the fact that we put alot of energy into the planning of the show all year long. We all owe you more than we can repay. Also, thanks need to be given to the volunteers who helped out behind the scenes and up front during the show. Tex and Noah for the Mugs. PK and Tex for the artwork and graphics work. All my deputies, you know who you were. Thnak you for the help. Jaymie and Billy, my kids, came up big for me as well. They helped run the mudpit with Eric. Thanks to Jaymie for staying up late to make sure the place didn't burn down while I was gone. And thanks to all that assisted her in doing so. Brian(Monstaru), yeah buddy, were square! I would like to address some of the criticism as well. While every show is a work in progress, we try to improve on the last. Some things could have gone better. Some people could have been in better control and not vomitted all over the bathromm and left it behind for some one else to deal with. Thanks again Craig! (free admission really doesn't cover it) To all the people who decided that 3-4AM was the right time to quiet down. BTW, the reason MY daugther was still up was because I asked her to keep an eye on things while I was gone. Yes, due to a monumental bad decision on my part i had to drive back to Bonney Lake to get my trailer and back to Hood River Saturday night/Sunday Morning. ~8hrs on the road was delightful only to hear the reports that were given to me. I am pretty disappointed to say the least. To the locals which we let in to our little shinding. Some of you were good sports('yota's) some of you will be made examples if we return (Fords). To the STi's who were so nice to impress us with their exhibition of speed and power. We have your plate numbers and some pics of you. You will be shamed when they arrive in my inbox. While the bad in no way outweighed the good it did still happen. I hope in the future we can have these shows without the drama afterwards. It does take away from it. And one last thanks has to go to all the people who came to our little party. Without you none of this matters. Thanks for taking time out of your busy lives to hangout with us. -
West Coast Subaru Show #8 date and venue decided.
Qman replied to ezapar's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Depends on who they are! J/K, talk to Eric when you get there. I don't have an issue with it as long as the space is paid for with the fairgrounds! Anyone wanting to save a spot will have to pay for it at that time. The spots are fairgrounds money not the shows!
