Just picked up this 87 GL-10 today for $500:banana:... Has all the bells and whistles and is redicuously clean for a 20+ y/o car... Has 98K original miles... There are a slew of things I could say about this car, I really think I got a killer deal for the price... Within a couple weeks I hope to have my D/R 5spd swapped in and driving it daily so I can sell my honda and finally have the cash to get my Ver.4 STi back on the road... Once I get the STi back running I plan to fab up a custom lift, bumpers, half doors, just about anything else I can think of... I'll do my best to keep everyone posted... This is my previous 89 GL that I began a solid axle swap on but never finished:-\... Hope to get my new one back to a similar state and drive it every day... -caleb

thats what I like to hear ... thanks..

Another question just to clearify... The 87 that I am getting has a digidash/gage and my 89 has the analog, will the speedo cable cable from my analog(89wagon) connect and properly work the digidash?
-
I wont see the car until tuesday when I pick it up... Assuming dave is right then it will be a 3AT... Honestly I dont care what it is though as it will be getting swapped soon...
-
Thanks for the info... Definately didn't cause any problems, infact that just made my outlook on doing the swap a hell of a lot better... And thanks for mentioning the cruise control because I completely neglected to think about that!!!

thanks for the input guys, its really clearing things up for me... Honestly I used to know the answers to most of the questions I am posing but I got away from these models for so long that I guess I have forgot... Really can't wait to go pick up the car... Will post pics when I do... Thanks again...

thanks for the info... I dont have a rear diff, axles or driveshafts from the donor car... So as long as teh drive shaft from the auto GL10 will work I can still bolt everything up and run FWD, just being careful never to put it in 4wd... I will run the numbers on the trannies to find out what FD they are but does anyone have any assumptions as to what final drive might be in the auto and in the manual trannies?

I am about to purchase an '87 GL-10 that is for the most part perfect inside and out for a 20+ y/o car. It is has an EA82T with a 4spd auto tranny. From what I am reading this is a full time 4wd car, correct me if I am wrong. It will not engage reverse, thus only has forward gears, that do work and drive nicely. My goal is to remove the D/R 5spd that I have in my 89 GL wagon and swap it into the GL-10. The 89 GL is basically a scrap parts car now so I am sure I have the majority of what I will need and I have several salvage yards close by at my disposal. So now onto my questions... From what I understand splines on the transmission ar different from the turbo/no-turbo cars, thus I would need the non turbo front axles or would the turbo axles infact work? Iis it possible to swap the axle stubs between the two transmissions? From what I understand the GL-10 is just a luxury package and there wouldn't be a differnce other than accessories between a GL's and GL-10's... Thus, is there a difference in the final drives between nonturbo and turbo or auto and manual? And is there any actual difference in the drivesafts? spline count, length, etc.. I figure so long as I can get the manual swapped in and have the front axles correct, I can just drive around in FWD until I get everything figured out with the rear. I dont see any concievable issues with this, am I wrong? The GL-10 has the digigage. Is there any difference in the speedo cables or anything else that I should be concerned with? I am sure I will have more questions to come but I figured I would start with this and see what feedback I get... Feels good to know I will be back into an EA82 scoob ... Thanks in advace... -caleb

Pretty insane, would like to know more about it...

This was my wagon when it was still independent suspension.... These are pics with the rear solid axle mounted without wheel spacers adn and without aggressive backspaced wheels; Good friend of mine he's 6'5" on a bad day... G'luck with your build, hopefully you will raise the bar for the rest of us...

There are sami's out there with everything from stock built axles to fully linked suspension with 2.5 ton Rockwell axles... http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1114373961053245731ckyoKL

From what I have found Toy parts are the cheapest way to go, since they are most plentiful... But if you are going ot do it right it will not be cheap by no means... Also I ran a sami tcase because of the many regearing options out there and compared to other tcases the prices are pretty reasonable too, only bad thing is the tcase will most likely be slanted to the passanger side... This will be perfect for the toy front but not so good for the rear...

If you have the skills to do so, link is definitely the way to go, next time around I am definately going with links...

Toyota solid axles worked realy well for me width wise... When I had yota solids under my wagon they fit damn near perfect, I had wheels with 3.5" back spacing and some 1.25 or 1.5 inch wheel spacers... The tires were 35x10.5 r15 i believe and about half of the tire, 5"s, stuck out on each side... So minus the wheel spacers, adjust the backspacing, and run thinner tires and the width should come out pretty close to stock...

92 sedan lifted! Look!

haha glad to see your back in the game, feel bad not finishing the wagon like I had planned... I have those 4.11's BTW -
well it seems like this project will come to a stand still and most likely be parted out... I have worked really hard on this but I have come to some realizations in life, as to my priorities... I know if I so desired I could continue on with this project however it would just take far more energy than I really want to despense... Frankly I am tired of being tired:confused: Hope I am not dissappointing anyone to much, other than myself since I am so close, but I promise I will be back and do another rig far better than the potential this one had... And hopefully in the meantime others will continue to push the bar higher...

if your going to do coils dont leave the axles centered in the wheel well, I would push them as far towards the front and rear of the vehicle as possible, makes yorue approach angle alot nicer... if you do want to have the axles in the stock location then I would suggest using coilovers, they cost a bit more but hell with the kind of money / time you want to put into this thing going for coilovers isn't to much more cost wise, might even be able to get away with airshocks depending on how streetable you want this thing to be..
-
COST.... thats why I am going with leafs... a 4 link is much much nicer and would probably work 10x better but its the cost that scares people away... I always hear people say we dont wheel subies cause we have lots of money... I am try'n to keep my cost down as much as possible so that maybe to influence others to do it... Either way this build will be very interesting and i cant wait to see it rolling...
-
mine still has a suby engine and tranny so I consider it a subaru thru and thru... I mean zuks swap yota axles under them all the time and they are still zuks... I guess to retain being a subaru I could swap independent suspension back into it ....
-
yeah i would really love to do a brat someday...
-
I hope come the end of this weekend to have my wagon somewhat driveable, center of the body is around 30 inches or so from the ground and I will be roll'n on 35's... I dont know if mine is, or will be the largest, but if it is I hope someone comes along and shows me up...
-
oh and I just finished putting together the front axle, full locker and nice 4 pot brakes... it should be under the wagon come the end of next weekend once I have some more time to work on it... I have wagoneer springs and the ranchos ready to go just need to fab up the mounting points, and the front brake lines are there too woot woot... I think I am going to fab up some system for the rack and pinion just so I can have the beast be mobile until I can get a yota hydro assist gear box, anyone got one ?...

if you want a 6x6 then you should probably go with rockwells, inwhich case 3 rockwells with bigger tires would outweigh any subaru lol, guess it would give a great low center of gravtiy... 6x6 would be interesting though, hmm...
