well here is a little update of some destruction, cutting out all of brad's hard work... before after m4d l3akz y0: more random pics The little tcase that could, soon to be 6.5:1 gears:banana:
-
makes me want to hurry up and finish my solid axle gl wagon... soon very very soon...
-
I am curious to know how much down travel you have with that setup... I have some 4.444 geared diffs from my old setup if you would be interested, one is lsd....
-
Well I have lifted the rear a couple times testing the revolver shackles and have noticed how much the body wants to flex and twist... Doors? who said anything about doors lol... Suppose they would be nice for winter... Anyways, I have some 200+ feet of 1.75" that I will use for stiffening and caging... I am certain that will be enough to fix all the flex spots.... Sorry there has not been and update, I really haven't had the time or money to be workin on it right now, I have to order a front axle rebuild kit before I go putting that back together and fabricating it up... Anyways thanks for the support and I hope I can get some mroe done soon and post some pics up...

Frame or no frame gusseting is still important, in this particular case probably more so but its nothing difficult....
-
I know they do not look very strong now, however I think after proerly gusseting everything I think they will be plenty strong... And once I get the front axle mounted I will go ahead and flex it out with the forklift and post some pics....

Ok guys I made a little progress on the build, basically got the rear axle all tac'd in place for now, since things are still subject to change... I am in no way try'n to be a perfectionist when it comes to this build, just try'n to create something functional, cheap, and keep everything simple... So please keep that in mind before bashing or criticising... After the STi, bike, school and all other bills I dont have much for this so I am working with what I got... Tire space uncut vs. cut quarter panel... Front lear mount and fear leaf mount for the rear leaf springs... Rear Craddle designed to nestle into the frame rails, will host the rear mounts for the rear leaf springs, bumper and possible winch... Best friend who is 6'7" standing next to wagon I am somewhat concerned about the axle width with the tires mounted being far to narrow, however I am going to be purchasing some steelies with far more backspacing and through in some 1.5" wheel spacers, shoul extend the width a good 6 inches... Of course the monkey with a tape to the rear of the unibody 35.25" from ground level...
-
The rear axle should be completely under the car tomorrow minus the shocks, brake lines and some gussets... I shouuld have some better pictures of the design and mounting of the leafs tomorrow evening...
-
yes I am most definately extending my wheelbase, I dont remember what the rough estimate was that I had but it is obviously quite a bit longer... I am going to try and finish up the leaf mounts this weekend, so long as a friend and I can get a front SAS and rear SOA done on a clients Xterra...

honestly that welded 3rd will not stay in there very long, I have a spare 5.29 third that is just waiting for a locker, just haven't found one for the right price yet...
-
I have a 95 Impreza coupe I would like to lift if this one goes well:banana: ...
-
Not really using a frame rather only what the unibody and subframes provide to make mounting points for everything I will need... So far the rear is looking good other than a place to mount the shocks, due to the gas tank; I hope the front will be as kind to me... But i think I may have solved the shock issue as well... Just wont know till I get more fab'n done...

well after about of year of debating and collecting some parts I have finally started my solid axle swap on my 89 gl wagon... when I picked it up, it looked a little something like this, thanks to brad... As of now the rear is completely torn apart, did some cosmetic work to the quarter panel and the solid axle is rolled under getting ready to be fitted... While this project is far from finished and I still have many unanswered questions, I am very excited that its becoming more of a reality... So what I have so far are: - 5.29 yota axles; weld front and lock right rear - 3" Rancho Springs - homade revolver type shackles for rear - rancho 5000 shocks - 35" Pro Comp Xterrains - Sammy Tcase There are plenty of other things I plan on adding including an EJ22 swap and some crawler gears for the tcase, however my main goal is to get everythign fab'd up and rolling around... Figured I would just share with the community and get some feedback/advice... Maybe if I find others are interested I will be more motivated to work on it as I have been is a lazy mood as of late, lol... -caleb

Well honestly I must explain myself too... Before the tear down I was running the dual rangetranny with a suzuki tcase with 4.44 gearing front and rear, had a rear diff up front just to prevent all the ?s of how I got 4.44 dearing into the tranny... I was running 30"x10.5" Super Swamper TSL's Back to the reason for a tear down, I am swapping solid yota axles front and rear and will also be going with a crawler tcase and an EJ22 eventually, but with my gearing I dont think the EJ22 is anything i need immediately... I just told him not to worry about what others are saying because it is total preference to what someone wants to run, and if its not going to work then he will find that out eventually...
-
Dont worry about having 30's on the brat I am about to have 35's on my gl wagon,
-
These are the guys I roll with... I hear nissans refered to the special olympians of 4x4, dont know what that makes my subaru but I guess we all have to stick together lol...
-
Also to DeathHatch, I was wondering if you can tell us more about the rig... What axles are those? Toys? and what type of gearing you are running? Any lockers or LSDs or welded diffs? What tcase? I am in the process of solid axle swapping my 89 GL wagon that is already Tcased... Should have the rear axle in it within a week... I will be running Toy axles with 5.29 gearing, rear welded, front detroit and a sammy tcase, also going with rancho 3" lift springs... It will be a bit of time before I have the front axle in and because of that I haven't quite put thought into the steering and was wondering if you cared to share what you are doing for yours? Your rig looks great, Im really excited about getting mine up and running, maybe they will spark some more interest in SAS subies... To bad we are on opposite sides of the country be sweet to see what they can do together on the trail... -caleb Edit'd with a pic of my rig as it used to sit...
-
They are ridiculously huge, because of clearance issue I would imagine... Looks like 33" Xterrains, thats alot to clear when considering the small size of the wheel well...
-
Haven't given the ebrake idea much thought setup wise, im sure I could figure something out... As for a frame, it has a full one now so I might just go that route, I just think it takes more away from the vehicle, less like a suby but then again its wont have to many suby parts left when I am done... Eithe way will suffice I suppose but I will cross that bridge when I get to it...
-
Orignally I was going to do plates but I have thought better of it, considering I will still need to have something to support the Tcase... So most likely it will be 2 subframes or just one miniture frame tied inton the unibody; this will provided mounting points for the rear of the front springs, front of the rear springs, and the Tcase... Then other mounts for the springs will be incorporated into the bumpers most likely cause I see no reason for them ever to come off, but if they do it will just be a little extra work... Ive tried to think through as much as possible but alot of the fabrication will be based on what is best at that moment, ideas change as well as necessity so I wont know whats what until the time comes, especially the steering lol
-
dual ebrake was an idea for the front considering I probably wont be able to get a locker right away for the front and I am not sure if I want to run welded in the front neither...
-
You sir are correct, it does have a sammy tcast and coupled with the D/R 5spd low gear is really nice, i am thinking of regearing its to like a 3:1 or 4:1... Dont know if I am very worried about onboard air as the other guys I wheel with have it but it will definately be somethin to look into...
-
Not really a mod that adds to its offroading ability but just put in some Suzuki seats I got off a friend... Yes I know, they are pink but the theme of the vehicle is going to be and STi pink and black... Exo cage, bumpers, sliders will all being pink maybe the rims too... They are surely not STi pink but its as close as I can get without spending to have them reupholestered...

Well rather than stir up an old thread I thought I would make a new one... I finally got a hold of some toyota axles and 3" lift springs to get me going on my SAS... Now this is going to take a fair amount of fabrication and considering I am about to go under the knife next week I doubt I will make much progress anytime soon... But none the less I have what I need to get a good start on this project... Eventually I am going to have the solid axles with lockers, 35" tyres, custom tube bumpers and sliders, and hopefully swap in a EJ22/EJ25... Probably some other other custom things, but I want to get some ideas of other mods or things I can do... I just noticed the thread on the dual ebrakes, really liked the idea and I might try that too, but none the less I just want to here any other idea yall might have that I could incoporate into this build... thanks, caleb
