So, my buddy's 99 forester, fried an alternator a while back, i helped him replace that, no big deal. The problem is, when the alternator was going, his speedo went all the way around, past 120, etc.. and pegged itself back to 0. So now whenever he drives around it is stuck at 0, because of the peg above it (where it usually sits on top of the peg). His mechanic said he needs a $200 part... i'm thinking that's a little much... can't we just undo the speedo cable, open up the dash, set the speedo back to zero (bring the needle around the face again) and plug the cable back in? Any ideas?

Noah, replacing the clutch pack & solenoid shouldn't be that hard, i've actually read that you can do it without dropping the trans, just disassembling the read end of the 4eat... I have to do the same thing w/ my impreza, lack of power to the rear end... can actually make the front end slip... The local tranny place near where i live in NH said they would do it for $400 bucks... but i still want to do it myself

So i have a friend stranded in VT, his alternator is dead. Will the alternator from a 97 OBS work in a 99 Forester? the OBS has a EJ22, and and forester has a EJ25. I'm guessing they won't bolt right up, or might have a different amperage if they do bolt up. We can hook him up to an optima red top, and have him drive on a dead alternator and suck down the red top for a while. any idea how far that will get him? Any ideas? Oh yeah, he's off of I-89, exit 4 mobile station, VT... if anyone lives near there & wants to make fun of him....

Here's an electronic trick for yah. Take some 10 gauge wire, slap one end of that puppy on the negitive terminal of your battery, and take the other end, and slap that mofo onto your engine block (un bolt something, & bolt it on w/ a ring terminal, battery & block of course). That's made a world of difference in shifting w/ my 4eat

I persanally am not a big fan of the FM modulators... they always just... suck... in my OBS i just kept a tape deck adapter in, and used that... but in the OBXT i have the problem of not having a tape deck... so the solution you may ask? well... i havent' done it yet, but i'm going to tap into the FM signal, on the audio control board, and throw in some JFET's to switch the signal from the FM radio, to an AUX input... if you want to have fun w/ electronics you can just cut some traces, wire in your own circuit, and away you go! only problem.. i have no clue about the workings of the inside of older radios... just learning about the 05 radio right now...

I don't plan on finding out the impreza is going to be turned into somethign that shouldn't be driven on pavement anyhow

nice deal for 450 dude. for the gas poper thing, you should be able to get at the cable if you full the fender liner in the back wheen there, if you can get to it, take some cable lube and get it worked in the liner there, you should also be able to get to it from where you pull the lever. As for struts, it's really easy to change them, but if you're going to do 2, you might as well do all 4. i think there's something like 2 bolts & 3 nuts to remove, and out comes your strut here's something i wrote up about lifting a roo' but it's the same as just changing your struts. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50268 i dunno if you can lift the OBW with just suspension mods.. you could of course get some king springs under there for like.. 450 bucks or so.

i have the same car, i'm going to swap on some Dunlop Graspic DS-2's on there, 215/60/R16, from the 225/55/R17's it's roughly the same Dia. I had those snows on my impreza, and they would go anywhere, i'd rank them up against blizzaks any day. AND tirerack.com has a pretty good deal on that size, something like $81/e I'm going to throw them on the forester alloys i have...
