DIY Struts R&R?
Andyjo replied to blitz's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
guys.. you can rent that compressor from advanced auto, or autozone.. .same one pictured for like 50 buck or soemthing... and if you bring it back.. they give you 100% back... dont' risk killing yourself with freaking string.. lol... yeah.. those bolts are fun arn't they? when i lifted my roo' i ended up laying on the ground, feet up in the wheel well pulling on my breaker bar... get it on the 3rd try a neat trick i learned this weekend can really help with those too. you take you breaker bar.. and like.. sit on it.. or put alot of force on it... then have someone else hit it about 1/2 way up the shaft.. it's just like having an impact gun.. but less the air comrpessor.. works great the key is to keep the constant pressure.. and then hit it.. not just hit it -
Well.. as a result of my romping around offroad... (ie: offroad section). So the story... after playing in the dirt/mud/rocks the roo' got a funny shimmy in the front the... you know, no big deal, i play it off as just an out of balance tire... a few days go by lots of driving to work & back... i head north to upstate vt (~150 mile drive) and about 8 miles from my destination (st albans vt) i hear a 'pop' and the whole car shakes like crazy when i push the gas... so as any person who loves their car would do, i kept driving the 8 miles, shaking all the bolts out of the car get there... stop... think a bit, and look under the car, and yup, just what i had though... inner axle joint didn't like life anymore. So no big deal... run over to advanced auto, get a new one (GCK baby ) and meet up with the girl, and we head to the camp ground... now.. i forgot to mention the part where i didn't bring any of my tools... So i think.. eh.. no big deal.. make some phone calls... (good to have friends everywhere)... the next day (saturday) in the rain we have an adventure swaping out my axle in the rain.. needless to say, the 3lb mini-sledge is most likely on of my favorite tools now but wait... we don't have a good jack.. (i hate scissor jacks..) so i find a stump next to a hole... back up (read romp) onto that setup.. lift the front drivers side up.. continue to work on her. So yeah, everyone here hates reading, so here are some pics of the axle (none of the setup :-\ ) 3lbs sledge.. meet the end of half shaft... it really didn't want to come out of the bearing.. so we showed it who was boss So in this picture... the only thing really keeping the joint together is the remainer of the boot on the back side there.... later on we pulled the joint apart... just because we could So, if you were at lake carmi campground this past weekend.. i'm sorry for all of the metal-on-metal noise coming from us beating the snot out of my axle... So once we got the new axle in... found out that when we were beating the axle stub... someone nicked on of the studs... so one of the lug nuts wouldn't go on.. no big deal.. just have to fix that someday So all in all... if you're going to bust an axle like that... find somewhere where you have good friends with tools... and 3/4" drive sets So... Most valuable tool of the trip: 3lbs mini-sledge Most sucky thing of trip: pouring rain & scratched windshield from crappy wiper blades :-\

if you do it really slow, you can get really nice bends... took me a good 10 minutes to heat that bend on my snorkle. have to keep it VERY even, front & back sides, all around.

3mpg (or more) from a roof rack?
Andyjo replied to stephenw22's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i took the factory rack, and thule racks off, and i gained 2 mpg (27, from 25).. although an odd thing.. when i had the factory racks on, and the box, i would get 29 on the highway -
so it and let us know the results

to get it to come out higher like that i used a 45deg' bend that went right into the airbox.. then sealed it from there. to cut the hole.. that was the exciting part... i put some silicon on the 45deg. and then ploped the fender on where it would sit.. then pulled it off again, and there was a rough outline of the hole... i punched through w/ a 2" hole saw, and then used a dremal tool to clean it up, and make it fit perfectly. and.. the hole in the front there is when i tried to use 1.5" pvc.. just not enough air flow... use AT LEAST 2"... but whatever, you'll find out after the first hole :-\

Finally Finished with my lift! **With Wheels!!!**
Andyjo replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Off Road
Brian... i hate you... in that loving sort of way looks HOTT! rock on man -
a heat gun works really well too. (used for shrink tubing, etc..) as to the explain.... to bend plastic tube/pipe, you heat it (dont' burn it) until it gets to a point where it will bend.. that's about it.. then you bend it, and let it cool. It's best to work the heat around the plastic if you can...rotate it, etc.. to make a nice even bend. That's what i did with mine at least. You can see the bend here: I think austin did the same thing... but he may have used a blow torch I tried it that way first... kept burning the plastic.... ALSO, if you're going to paint it afterwards, be sure to wipe it down with some acetone first, because pvc comes with some greasey/oily coating which will make your paint not stick well.. and chip right off.
-
But also remember, if it's cold out, and you've had a bit much to drink..deciding to paint your snorkle could result in broken pvc joints all over your kitchen floor ......

Alot :-\If you can get someone in AU to sent you a set, it's like $220 USD If you buy them in the US... you can expect to pay something like $265-$300, depending where you get them. I got them from here: http://www.gforceautosports.com/lightforce.htm the best price i could find online really.. i also got some black lenses, from here: http://off-roadlights.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=4 They're very pricy, but man do they throw some light! Oh yeah, they sell a step large, and smaller of the same light.. they also have HID's which are like 900/e... but you know.. just for your information... i think 140's would be find for a subaru really.. but the 170's are.. well.. insane

Make titanium axles or at least cobolt

could have gotten some h20 in the steering yoke... mine siezed up... twice.. and it was sort of like that....

lol, i like the boxfan sandwich idea For a tig torch, the water flows inside the electric line, keeping it cool, the welder itself in this case has no water affiliation. They sell crazy adapters which get the water on the inside of the electric line (it just a tube w/ water in it, with a coax-type electric around it), there are also some small veins in the torch which the water goes through, cools it, etc... I'm not sure exactly what kind of temperatures the coolant will be operating at... but.. whatever I'll see if i can find an intercooler from the junkyard, this could be fun my dad said i could try using an old mini-fridge, and just run a ton of pipeing inside of it... and just keep the fridge running..but i don't think that's as good as a radiator idea... it'd use a crapload more electricity too!
-
Think i could make a watercooler for my tig welder out of a subaru radiator? all i think i need to do is run the water line through a pump, and have it cycle back through the radiator, into a resivior, and then get pumped back through.. perhaps have a fan blowing on the radiator....ideas?

Gary, they rubbed the mudflap screw head a tiny bit when the car was heavily weighted down.. i took all but one of the flaps off and they seem to fit fine. There is a nice shiney spot in the front, back-inside fender well from the tires at full lock i believe. I'm pretty sure they'd fit a stock OBS... but i never tried before i lifted it. So yeah.. they'll fit if you want them to, those tires came off of an 03' forester (i believe it's what they ran stock). The only problems you might run into are the mudflaps, and MAYBE the inside fender.. but that's only if you go full lock and gas it, daily

There are absolutly no guarentees that you can make then fit, by just bolting stuff on...

Who said Outback & Forester Struts are the same part number? They need to be slapped! (at least according to the KYB listing i have) you could try to modify the bottom half of the strut where the camber bolts go in, i you put some more plate in there.. and then re-drilled some holes further down, that could push the hub a little further away from the perch... Just guessing.. but that might have a slightly less chance of boiling the oil than doing the perches.
