  1. I was playing around w/ topo usa the other day, trying to find a shorter way to one of my friend's houses, because i was driving my big ol' truck (8mpg! ) and it told me to go on these grey dashed lines.. well.. i figured if it told me to go on the grey dashed lines, they must be roads.. right? well i was wrong, and i sure am glad that thing had 4lo and diff lockers, because all were needed. This trip involved driving over a 8" diameter tree, fording a river, and small 'ponds' created by all the freaking rain we've gotten. I THINK a subaru could get through it, but more lift that i have may be required. Although i never did bottom out the ol' 77 Scottsdale . Subie94, if you want to get together and try to romp through these trails up here let me know.
  2. put it in neutral....? we've dragged my subi all over the place, up hills, down dirt roads, sideways out of a snow bank... never seemed to have any problems?
  3. I'm not saying it was offroading, i'm saying that from this experience, not on the road, i'm sure they would suck offroading. Sorry for the confusion :-p I think the tire on the trashed rim might be ok... the inside of the rim gave out, so there's a hole right through it! i don't really have any good pics of that.. maybe tomorrow
  4. It wasnt' a highway median.... it was a big company, in their driveway... and i went a good 50 yards.... nothing big! but still off the road
  5. I learned this the hard way today up in Vermont. I thought i could just drive down the median and turn around in the soaking wet grass/mud. With my snow tires.. no big deal... but ohhh man grass & mud was flying everywhere Luckily i managed to get a tiny bit of traction and pop back onto the road. Oops! Also! I obtained some Forester Rims today, 4 of them! only problem is that 1 is trashed (see picture...) All the other wheels are fine, and are have Cooper Lifeliner Classic II's on them.... yeah.. i'm looking to replace them with something beefy and gnarly for some off-road action Anyone have any luck w/ 16 inchers off the road?
  6. Cherokee rims would look hot on a subaru ... if they'd fit that is
  7. i just tap the top of the tie-rod w/ a hammer... pops right out... i guess you're not 'supposed' to do it that way.. but it worked for me! i think the hardest part of throwing on a new rotor is getting the brake plate off (the thing the caliper bolts to). i had to bring my car into the shop to have them break em out of there, drilled & tapped em when they broke. eh.
  8. I want some! to cover up the non-muddy spots on my car... oh wait... i won't be using much of it and remember... if you can't see the rust, it's not really there!
  9. drag your tool set under the car w/ you, and try each one... usually how i work
  10. drygas gets rid of water in gas, if you have bad gas, in the winter or something. Thus making it 'purer' and burns cleaner
  11. I've got some Dunlop Graspic DS-2's on my impreza, and man... they'll go ANYWHERE. i managed to get to the top of a ski hill back in NY, where my friends' couldn't get w/ their jeep w/ BFG A/T's =). They wear... OK.. they're actually quiter than my touring tires! I drove to West Virginia and back with them on, and all around New York... and just had them taken off yesterday. The fronts wore pretty bad, because i've needed an allignment for about 1/2 a year now.... but the rear are holding up strong! they look almost brand new!
  12. could also be your brakes, loosen them up a little and see if it still happens, or pop off the shoe (i'm assuming drum brakes) and see if all the mechinisms in there are still free to move (not all rusted up). My car's actually in the shop right now having the bearing replaced. It started as sort of a rolling noise, and.. well just kept one doing that. What kind of car is it? the impreza's stock bearings suck balls, they should be replaced w/ legacy tapered roller bearings.
  13. at around 10k RPM your pistions will start to shoot out of the block, and since they're horizantally opposed.. they'll most likely take out your front end, wheels, etc. So i believe that a 'humming' or 'buzzing' would be normal at that kind of speed =p But yeah, the heat shields on my headers likes to do that., also if you've ever high centered it check in the middle, sometimes the heat shields get bent up and touch the exhaust.
  14. Well think of it this way, it's most likely been torn for a long time, if you haven't been under that offten, both my boots are torn, and i just haven't gotten around to getting new ones. I would be great to have them changed, just incase, but your stearing system will still work, there isn't any major mechanical use for them. To replace them you have to disconnect the tir-rod from the knuckle, drop it down, then you can slide it off. I believe Haynes says to take off the end, and take the threads to prevent damaging the new boot when putting it on. If there's no noticable 'crunchyness' in the stearing you're most likely fine, unless you like to pay in the mud, once that gets in there.. well.. problems may arrise.
  15. i had an idea way back... remove the stare tire, throw it on the roof, and put a very large speaker there
  16. Good luck trying to find steels in a j/y in VT =P i've been looking for wheels ALL SUMMER in the junk yards... no dice. i'll look around, and if i find some i'll let you know. Snow tires are awesome, especially in June! (just got them swapped off). Montpielier is a fun place, weather is usually normal... if you ever head south on i89, you'll go by say exit 6-3... it'll be nastier than everywhere else in VT. even if it's 80 degrees out, no snow in montpielier, there will be snow and sleet and death waiting for you in that strech of highway! i don't know why! But yeah, your subaru will love VT. Also... you live in florida... when you get to VT you will be introduced to salted roads... and lots of fun rust!
  17. i don't know why it would happen, but by putting in a fuse and driving around you'll burn out your tranny solenoid, and that's no good. From what i've read it's for dyno testing or something, not for driving around... if somehow that fuse got shorted... you might be in trouble with that... hopefully you want to keep it in FWD for a while
  18. Rubbing Alchohol = Isopropal = Dry Gas just to let you know. just dont drink it, you'll die.
  19. yeah, watch the tire pressures, during the trip too, because they'll mess up your rear end if they're off, and you're driving that far. other than that it sounds like you should be all set. Where in VT are you moving? i live in the middle of NH, you should lift your subaru and we can play in the mud
