Not sure about EA81 but on the EA82 there is a dog bone bar stabilizing the engine/trans to dampen moments of high torque changes (impulse) such as when starting from a stop or stopping after moving. It can be seen coming from under where the spare tire sits down to the trans. On my EA82 if that is not crazy tight, a thunk is heard. -
Low miles on a 29 year old vehicle doesn't mean much. All the rubber hoses and seals are 29 years old too. They haven't invented rubber yet that lasts 29 years, let alone in 1987. Call up a dealer service shop and ask for a quote on resealing the engine and replacing hoses and belts on a 1987 GL. The go back to the seller and take that quote off the asking price. Chances are they will OWE YOU a tidy sum.

Sometimes the lash adjusters get stuck in the sleeve because the sleeve develops a slight lip the keeps it from coming out. The machine shop had to deal with that before they would come out when I did my engine two years ago.- 9 replies

Loved the wristwatch on the steering wheel. Damned flawed digital clock. I knew my Loyale wasn't a sports car, rock star or car for getting laid. It was simply reliable, inexpensive and easy to maintain. Nice review.

My neighbor's cat patrols my driveway as well. I once saw it face down a raccoon. My car only got mice after being in the garage over the winter. The mice had chewed a hole in the rubber bumper on the bottom of the garage door. Might have to get a kitty again -
Oh how I hate mice! I had uno in storage over the winter and mice moved in. I put screen over the vents but apparently there are other ways in. I took off the vent covers and sucked out the nest with a vacuum then leaf blower. It was right over the air intake making me want to puke. A bleach wash, flush and dry neutralized it pretty well. I bought a bottle of peppermint extract and dumped the entire bottle in the vent intake. Now it smells like a breath mint. Why don't the mice go live in Chevies or a Prius?

I use Royal Purple 80w -90 in my 5 spd Fwd manual Trans in Uno. I think it gives smoother shifts.

New heads or crate engine EA82?

What was the reason for removing the heads to begin with? Was the motor running poorly? Are you doing the work yourself or is someone hired? Is money no oject? If the engine ran fine I would reuse the heads as nonsubaru machine shops not familiar with the Ea82 would declare the heads unusable. From their perspective of having to warrantee their head work, I agree. But that doesn't mean the heads won't last a long time. My heads have those cracks and the engine runs fine. A crate motor isn't just a swap and go. They typically have sat for long periods with no lubrication meaning dried out seal and belts. And there is no guarantee the heads are better. It is a question of time, cost and the quality of the finished product you desire. -
If you check major things like brake lines and all the parts BEFORE you leave for the long trip, you should be good to go. Replace critical parts if there is any question at all - brake shoes, hoses belts etc. Then after v that I would suggest carrying extra coolant and oil and check them religiously on the trip. If the car was unreliable as your daily, it will be worse on the long trip. If it was reliable as the daily then it should be reliable on the long trip provided you have the consumable parts within their wear period (belts, hoses etc). If the battery is over 5 years old, buy a new one.

Last time I did that I used an air impact wrench. Of course the engineneeds to be out.
