Loud bang on left turn up a drive ramp
MR_Loyale replied to MR_Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Those were replaced last year. I have another identical Loyale Sedan (1992) that does have worn out rear shocks and I cannot get it to make the bang sound no matter how hard I drive it up the ramp. -
How To Keep Engine Cooler? Any Ideas?

Do you ever hear gurgling when you are stopped at a light or driving? Sounds like your tummy rumbling but it is actually air bubbles in the cooling system. -

I have had my car brand new since 1994 and at 42K mile the cheap crap plastic radiator sprung a leak (surpise, the Subaru warranty only covers it up to 40K miles). I replaced it myself, asking the radiator shop for one with metal endcaps. At 180K miles on the ODO I still have that same metal end radiator. Never had an overheat. -
Dealer Service Dept ERA Technician Dispatching Software cheat sheet?
MR_Loyale replied to Crazyeights's topic in Shop Talk
Hi Jeff, I never heard of that software but I think this is their website: http://www.reyrey.com/support/training/Reynet_training.asp Might want to try contacting them about such a command cheat sheet. Also might want to ask if there is a help screen in the software you can send to the printer. There is a general support number you can call: 800.767.0080 -

I would recommend against thinning out the antifreeze. Not only does the coolant (ethylene glycol) in the cooling system cool the engine but that coolant also lubricates the water pump. I would go with the recommended ratio of coolant to distilled water. Might want to consider that you could have a head gasket leak. -
Unnecessarily replaced the passenger front balljoint yesterday. I was trying to fix a bang on a sharp right turn on an incline. Turns out it was in the rear and I suspect a spring. But I did find a handy tool for separating the ball joint from the control arm: Harbor Freight Item 99849:

Loud bang on left turn up a drive ramp

I thought that too, but this is definitely coming from the rear passenger wheel area. Had a neighbor listen too. If I go real slow it doesn't do that. Now of course some smart alec will tell me just to go real slow. Maybe the rear springs are worn. -

Are you going to make it to WCSS this year? -
So yesterday I spent the day doing a ball joint on Uno's passenger side. Turns out it didn't need replacing. Now I got a Chinese crap ball joint where a perfectly good Subaru part had been. On the plus side, I learned to do ball joints and decided that the Harbor Freight ball joint separator (item # 99849) is the only way to go. On the minus side though, I still get the bang when turning left to go up a driveway ramp. However it is intermediately fixed when one has an observer, kind of like the observer effect in physics. I thought it was a ball joint causing this but obviously after having replaced the ball joint I still get the bang. It doesn't bang when the tire makes contact at the transition point but rather more like when the rear is swinging around. I thought maybe it was the rear scraping, but there are no marks on the car or the concrete. I have been driving up the same spot for years with no scraping and the rear shocks are newly installed from last year. I am beginning to suspect something with the strut spring winding and releasing tension. These are the original struts from 1992 (1993 MY built in 1992). Thoughts?

Rebuilt EA82, low oil pressure and ticking.

I think a new oil pump was about $200 last year when I did my engine. -

When I did my engine I just bought an entirely new oil pump. No problems. -
Who has had a rear go bad!?
MR_Loyale replied to firstsubi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Has any work been done recently to the rear? What is the vehicle? (yr model etc). Can you describe the sound or better yet post a video with sound? Need more data. A wheel getting hot can be from the friction of brakes that are dragging. I had surge brakes on my boat trailer and once near vantage wa, they locked but my truck kept going. Finally a car passed and flashed its lights and as I glanced out the side view mirrors flames were shooting from the wheels. The rotors got red hot and flame danced on them. You can jack up the rear, one side at a time and spin the wheel by hand. If you hear grinding noises it may be a bearing. If the wheel doesn't spin freely, look to the brakes. Pull back and forth in the jacked up wheel vertically and horizontally. Is it tight or is there wobble? The fact is with cars this old, the only economical way you can own them is by doing the work yourself. Otherwise you are just a major repair away from paying more than the value of the car for a repair. Oh and yes you can have a problem in the rear. I had a bearing start to make noise last year. I replaced both sides instead of waiting for the other to make noise. Some of the best money I ever spent. -
The very first car I ever had was a used 1971 Plymouth Duster with a 318 my dad bought for me for $200 saying how we would rebuild the engine. I was not interested in auto mechanics at that time as electronics and software were my geeky pursuits. I just wanted a car to drive. So after the engine was apart, my dad decided he would hone the cylinders using those three stone setups on the end of a drill. All seemed fine until we took it to a machine shop to get the rest of the work done. The guy measured the cylinder walls and said it was done wrong and would have to be done oversize. It was the largest you could go before hitting the water jacket and the last time it could be rebuilt. Sine then, I have never had the need to do honing but if I ever did it would be strictly done by a shop. Now there are those that know what they are doing when it comes to honing at home and more power to them. It is just not a job I would trust myself to be able to do right.

I think it is to see at what angle the trike will flip backwards from the counter force of the torque driving the wheels. At steeper angles, the gravity vector that opposes the torque lessens until at some angle the torque overcomes the gravity component opposing and the trike flips backwards. That or I am just full of crap. lol

Dumb Question? Loyale vs. GL (Wagons)?
MR_Loyale replied to DT250a's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What is with all the hate on the automatic shoulder straps? I love mine. I'm weird. Let me also rump roast that with the grenading airbags in the "modern" vehicles, I am GLAD I do not have airbags. -
I am currently looking at roof racks. Can you please tell me some of the less expensive ones you would recommend? I have a Loyale Sedan, well two actually. But I am only shopping for a rack for one of them at the moment. I have zero experience with them. If there is a way to screw up installing it, I am sure to find it lol.

I got Ash, the red sedan out after a winter slumber. Having last been out in December i was expecting some hesitations or some issues. NONE. Started right up and ran great. I drove Ash up to Mt Rainier, here are some pictures: We stopped at the first snow fed waterfall. Ash peeking out from behind the rock safety wall waiting for my return. The mountain was definitely out today. Made it up to Jackson Visitor center Ash performed wonderfully. Took to the hills with no hesitation at all. The brakes have a slight warp and his transmission main shaft bearing is worn a bit which causes the stick vibration. But overall I was very impressed.
