  1. May need to reset distributor timing, make sure that engine at tdc and the dissy fire order is where it should be. This caused my ea81 not to start always helps to check
  2. Thanks for the help guys I was able to replace it, cleaned out the vac line too and the shifting has improved quite well. Still slips a little but at least it's not struggling to find what gear it needs to be in, even though theres only 3 lol
  3. I may be talking of the Modulator it screws into the passenger side of the tranny right next to what I believe is the speedocable. At first I thought that the governor and modulator where the same thing. It's a little bell shaped diaphram, I was finally able to replace it after litreally having to pry part of it off. Should I still check the governor if my transmission continues to slip? @silverhelme @DaveT excuse my lack of knowledge in the part names, this is the first auto vehicle I've owned. Needless to say I miss the manual life
  4. So I've been trying to figure out why my subie has been shifting hard and slippin. Changed the fluid, tranny filter and pan gasket. Still slips so I thought I'd check out the governor. I got a new one since it was only $20. Upon trying to unscrew the old one figured out that the governor is not one piece. Rather it's two cast pieces put together. Even tried hammering them together so the outer shell wouldn't spin but now it just busted off leaving the inner flanged piece. Wish I could word it better but I'll add some pics. WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO TAKE THIS THING OFF?! Pain it's what makes my subaru a working subaru lol
  5. Not really needing to change the filter, just need the new gaskets but the kit came with it. Only 3 bucks on rock auto. Thanks I'll have to check that governor too, But The car seems to run fine when it has the right amount of atf in it. I'd much rather have a standard tranny, but i can't complain the car has really low miles. @silverhelme
  6. So I've been wondering why my GL has had trouble shifting. As soon as I added some atf fluid, I noticed it leaking from the tranny pan. Already ordered a filter kit with gaskets. So what I'm wondering is if the pan will need sealant with the new gaskets? I searched the service manual PDFs for any info on this but came up empty handed. Hopefully once this is repaired it will be a reliable classic. Thanks for looking!
  7. Incase y'all were wondering here's what she looks like
  8. Thanks guys for the tips. @ebarb @jono @DaveT @Dee2. Had a friend of mine who's good with older cars look at it. Seems that the distributor was firing in the wrong order. Moved it a few teeth and aligned with tdc and it turned right over!
  9. Had spark at the plugs and made damn sure the wires were right but I'll check that stuff too thanks Dee2
  10. So I recently traded my Honda xr250 for a low mile 83 GL. Owner said it ran before it sat for a few months. To cut to the chase. Checked ignition, checked fuel. car will crank but won't start. Even changed the fluids, and spark plugs. The carb just seems to spit fuel out of the carb vents. Previous owner put a Holley on it. Figured it may have been the carb so got a new Weber 32/36. Put it on and still spits with no start. Now I'm thinking I need to adjust valve clearences since the service manual says that it may throw compression tests off. Should I get ready to crack open the valve covers, or should I focus my attention elsewhere? Any help should narrow it down, I'm new to Subaru flat 4s, so go easy on me. Thanks all!
