  1. I was thinking the timing was off because I timed it with a bad MAF, but I re timed it and adjusted the idle and its still running a little rough. Timing shakes around 20* btdc and the idle will bounce between 1k and almost dead. Im trying to get it to idle around the 700 mark.
  2. Figured it out. 5+ years of owning this car and it not idling while it's cold, you guys would want to punch me in the head. MAF was bad. I had a code, and I cleaned it and the housing, no dice. Bought a reman from rockauto and now it idles cold. Idles finds rough though.
  3. I cant figure out how to resize pictures from my phone.
  4. The bore scope is my next plan of attack, I have a buddy that has one. I don't know if a new dip stick would push the old one down in the tube further or not, I don't know where to get a new one, and there's nothing in the junk yards here.
  5. I have a picture of the dipstick, but I cant upload it. I don't know how far down it is, I shoved in my magnet as far as I could without bending it and got nothing. I got it in at least as far as the top of the dipstick to where it's broken off.
  6. Sorry I haven't written sooner. No pics of the dip stick, but it's broken off right below the 2 rivets.
  7. Hey guys. This morning I tried to check my transmission oil and noticed the dipstick is broken off inside the tube somewhere. I tried to pull the tube out of the tranny, but it just tried deforming. Any ideas I should try to get it out, and where to get a new one?
  8. Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced or anything? I haven't pulled it off yet. My plan is to get to it tonight after work.
  9. Seems to be running a little better now, still wont idle when it's cold.
  10. Yeah, I don't know where I got 14 from. I'll get that done when I get off work and I'll report.
  11. I just pulled the distributor again tonight, making sure #1 was at 0* tdc and placed it back in the cam tower in the middle of its adjustment. I plugged the green connectors in and timed it to 14* btdc. After unplugging the green connectors, there is no change in how it runs.
  12. Could it be a faulty distributor that causes it to die when I try to plug the green connectors together?
  13. Here is the thread my struggle has been documented in lol. Specifically page 2 where I tried to time it.
  14. I pulled the distributor before the gasket blew and noticed the previous owner or the owner before them had pulled it too. There was a mark where the rotor should be when at tdc on #1, same thing with the gear on the bottom of the distributor. That was when I found out the car would die when I tried to hook up the green connectors. I got it as close as I could to where it would run at the time. It runs well around 3k rpms, but it's just drinking the gas.
  15. Thanks for all the replies you guys. I've had problems with this car since I've had it. I have another thread I can link to in a few minutes that tells about the troubles I've had. Since I replaced multiple sensors and what not, the #3 head gasket went out and was leaking coolant into the cylinder. I had a set of heads cleaned up and given a valve job, installed good used lifters, and got the 2 special o rings from the dealer for the cam tower. Car is running now but it seems to be firing too late. The cylinders getting filled with too much fuel or whatever. And I'm only getting about 22mpg. Before the head gasket went out I tried to check the timing and it would die when the connectors were hooked up also. I just don't know what to do now so i can time it accurately.
  16. Hey everyone. I need to do the timing on my 89 spfi wagon, but when I plug the green test mode connectors together the engine dies. What do you think would cause this?
  17. I don't think so, I dont have a computer. I meant to write sooner, but I got it figured out. I just had to mark the tabs that I think limit how high the window actually goes up and loosen those and everything worked fine. Hardest part of the job was getting what was left of the old window out of the tracks because of the broken glass above the rollers.
  18. Hey guys. While I was at work this weekend someone smashed the driver side, back seat window out of my 89 wagon. I know where 1 is at a junk yard but I've never swapped a window before. Anything I need to know before I go get it today?
  19. Yup, check the black box on the coolant reservoir for a blown fusible link.
  20. That's what I ended up putting in. I wasn't sure if there was a copper gasket in there.
