ER27 durability + performance build
Steptoe replied to tjet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The ER27 is essentially an EA82 plus two more pots, bigger volume oil and water pumps. I have not paid attention to the intake manifold - whether it is spider style or earlier flat manifold - suspect flat On my EA82T I have deleted one coolant hose from centre of 1 & 3 side that went to throttle body and it's brother over near starter motor on manifold again. So deleted the coolant warming circuit of throttle body which some say is needed to prevent icing up of throttle in cold conditions. Minus 9° C is not cold enough to cause me problems EA82 also has a 5.5 mmID hose from top front centre of block to thermostat housing. Some need brass fittings replace the mild steel tubes rusting out. I feel this hose is needed to bleed air from top of block to reduce/ prevent air pockets turning to steam pockets -

Nike ? Fuji ? I thought that was a boomerang ! -
The RX shock values are in the FSM

Typo alert....all looks like an EA82 not EA81 You also need water pump belt pulley ....

ER27 durability + performance build
Steptoe replied to tjet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wreckers have used these discreetly on used engines they supply in case of any warranty claims. Engine rebuilders also. Got a stash of these somewhere. The centre of the washer is like solder, if not solder. At certain temps it melts and falls out leaving tell tale sign the engine has been cooked. I failed to measure temp as it melted when I warmed one up on the furnace So where was the leakdown leaking? Could you hear it in intake, exhaust or crankcase? -
You need to make a wire bridge for trans selector connector close to gear stick. It is a surprisingly fat cable you need make a loop with two male spades each end from memory , did mine 2007

My EA82 auto to manual conversion went well The gearbox xmem is same auto to manual but think later auto had extra Tran tunnel brace

91 Loyale Clutch 4WD ?? =(
Steptoe replied to gizmonix's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A good rule of thumb is replace clutch cable same time as clutch. They can wear where we can't see. -
91 Loyale Clutch 4WD ?? =(
Steptoe replied to gizmonix's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How was wear on tyres before and after? Rubber or mud build up inside the wheel tubs from abusive driving? The keys of other same era sometimes fit and work in these old locks, so they may not have left any clue. An extra visible steering wheel lock is my added deterrent to joy riders -
EA81 Weber Conversion Writeup
Steptoe replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just my 2c worth for almost any Weber conversion using their air filter design Due to the size of the filter assembly being way smaller than factory and the PCV fitting being small as... I would include a catch can to connect up both left and right rocker cover breather hoses with their generous 19 mm ID ,and run a same size ID hose as the smaller PCV connector at air filter assembly. Run a filter for air into crankcase on a T'd hose- 9 replies

Something I am yet so see in the flesh. Vacuum solenoids would be a pretty close term Can I suggest you put up a want ad with that sort of wording in title? There are only so many ways a vacuum solenoids will work Some air just switching vacuum when powered up, possibly when power goes off. Two port pipe connections Some have a little hat on a third port so one side sees atmosphere when on or off You may want to look closer at what you have. Mark them to identify. If they share same wire colours and plug they may likely be the same if you have two working opposite each other. Test them electrical by adding 12v to them, see if they click or blow a fuse you added to the power up just then. Many cars this era used vacuum solenoids for all sorts of vacuum control. Most are 12 v but if ecu controlled may be 5 v ??? Many of us have found solenoids elsewhere to do the job....may need wiring correct plug

For centre diff lock on awd model or locking in rear wheels on manual part time fwd?
-
I have not looked at the detail of the kits, thought you might do that, processing others input Comment on load on wiring could've sorted by wiring in new relays and wires to get power from battery direct to new relays, reducing original lighting circuit and switches to just switching new relays. There are kits as in a new wiring loom available mainly for LED installs that need positive switching. This would fix problems I had with the inners beinghighbeam only, negative switching

R I P Lil Red - got rear ended Tuesday
Steptoe replied to Crazyeights's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Front and rear cameras are starting to sound appealing. You got hit Tuesday and it is now Sunday. Did you take five days to wake up and walk away? Maybe you hit your head harder than you thought. Was it a factory seat that broke up or a modified option? And glad you are OK. Slightly broken hearted though I bet -
Do you know why they came loose? New to you? Your work? Wrong bolts? These babies have a sort of three leaf clover look to their mating face and don't have a real tight torque.

EA81 Pistons/Connecting Rods
Steptoe replied to Mr.Pratt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Was it Ivansimports member here claiming EJ20 pistons fit EA engines at a better power-up? Though when queried, he had not actually done it himself. Someone revealed EJ piston crowns sitting in an EA82 they pulled heads off I think the EA con rod little end bushes need replacing with a bush that allows for EJ size gudgeon pin -

EA81 Pistons/Connecting Rods
Steptoe replied to Mr.Pratt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey mate, just did a parcel quote via interparcel dot com Australia to Fairbanks AK zip ending in 01 out of about five optional codes Cheapest about A$35 Next one, carrier is your UPS A$49 I should look at expected shipping time eh? I used one kilo which could be two rods if I used styrofoam and tape. Or one and cardboard boxing and some fat allowance Think I sized dimensions as 200*100*50 mm Must have two more rods down in the shed if I can see -

I got ten bucks from the scrap merchant for whole EA81 the last time... -
This starts the question ...will an EA82 EFI fuel tank fit to EA81 body in order to get tank internal baffling? Or possible to find a turbo brat fuel tank? If it is baffled for EFI turbo would make life easier If the DR 5 sp is out of a carb donor the axle stubs should be 23 spline so allows you to use standard 4 WD EA81 shafts. MPFI manual boxes have 25 splines if you have this, ask more questions The EA82 box conversion is easy to do, Easy to walk you through it. I have done three. Never finished an EJ conversion

Thus is his true twin port, twin carb EA81 that chewed up something to do with dizzy drive. I don't think it has been on the road yet...
