Hitachi Carburetor alternatives
Steptoe replied to tylertrend's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I looked at maxpeedingrods one - might be good source for Hitachi idle cut solenoids alone Thanks for sharing -
Solar powered sensor lights for dark time at least. Have you a high spot to mount some? Another beaut move it on buddy system I came up on once on the surrounds of a takeaway in a quiet industrial area _ sensor light came on and at same time a ringing bell. Each time light went out, so too did bell. I thought twice ( very quickly) about knocki g that place over How about an electric fence jigger rigged up with an earth strap. Should prevent people taking a leak on your pride and joy

Hitachi Carburetor alternatives

It is the lack of reliable touch sensors that is going to let you down here. Tandy / Radio Shack did one in the 80s that I installed in one car and still worked 30 years later. What let it down was the adjustable motion sensor that was not a mercury tilt switch as rumoured. Motion detection was a lateral pendulum between contacts a bit like relay contacts. I could have it nicely adjusted for bumps, yet in the cool of the early morning, whether it was bimetal or not pendulum, the temp made it contact setting off the alarm for three long minutes, or the time for me to work out I was not dreaming the alarm was going off, get up, fumble for keys, fly outside to deactivate - no remote fobs then! Water proof pin switches for boot and bonnet Arm and disarm was by IGN on, off and accessory position so no remotes, auto armed was best thing about it - superior to today's remote fob arm disarm

Do it ! Especially as you have a rebuilt EA82 I have done this three times now, each with theEA82 5MT No mods to dizzy tangs at least if std height I love how mine just keeps revving and pulling - quietly due to ohc and hydraulic lifters. Mind you, I have not done a single port one. Mine have been all twin ports either na or turbo All the std hates of EA82 are gone when you run the EA81 radiator ! You really need to drop one in to see where you need to belt the rails the tiniest. I filed done the flutes on the rocker cover for clearance

I would think so. I have an early fwd, carby EA82 distributor that I pinched the two pin module from inside, to fit to my EA81 dizzy. This early EA82 dizzy was just two wires, one to each side of the coil. The module was common to Subaru and Honda and others? I wonder if US got this simple dizzy

ea82 lifter tick & bubbles in oil
Steptoe replied to wysubey's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Did just that and found five Seafoam products available in Australia yet the engine treatment the most likely match product to this thread, only the blurb says it is an a fuel additive rather than an engine oil additive - which is where my brain stumbled So, thinking it is a trick to add fuel cleaner to engine oil, just not too much, and it possibly evaporates out of the oil before too long. I like to look after my engines a bit more than previous owners, but still too thrifty to copy some dealers while they service cars still under warranty - they add an engine oil flush just prior to oil change - and of course add 15 to 20 bucks to the invoice, Just to take a leaf out of modern vehicle service practices might lead to extending life of our old girls -
How is compression and any blowby?

How early Impreza seats > EA81 ?
Steptoe replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for going to efforts here , I stumbled upon a good reason to go for a free scrap metal disposal trailer run and these went in it - but only after a pair of Suzuki Swift 2007? seats went in with minimal effort. These are not satisfactory though, so it will be time to visit the idea of refurbishing the originals -

That is good news. Maybe take note of odo reading now, and when/if noise comes back. Is Seafoam just one product or many? -
ea 81 Getting Power from an ea 81
Steptoe replied to FaceChoklad's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Where do you want this power? Low speed, high speed, seat of pants, EA81T Twin Hitachi carbs on manifold Just a tune can help Those that EJ seem to also go EA82 five speed conversion Hang around the aircraft engine sites if any left. Somewhere out there are special heads SUB4 New Zealand, roller rockers, cast alloy rocker covers. SUB4 used to run a Brumby with their engine components in it. 16/56 camshaft profile was best I did, until I went twin carbs, then EA82 Y pipe EA82 5 MT Then the best thing I did was put an EA82 in- 4 replies

Fwd carby EA82 had a basic common two pin module will only work if yours is carby. Also have a bit more advance or faster advance than 4WD if I believe the internet $40 modules

Adjustable castor bar EA81 still available?
Steptoe replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok. Thanks carf -
I permanently jumped mine down near handbrake bolts to floor, as have most others doing this conversion. If search function works you'd find similar responses

Sensors not, switches yes. These babies have one for reverse, one for neutral, one for fifth and one for low range and a fifth one too? if I got it correct. You can sort of then work them out when you look at the line of the three shift rails. Good that you got it. I hope your centre diff is better than the one I got from a Subaru member over here. Cost me $800 ten years ago

Dipstick broken off in tranny
Steptoe replied to Espey16's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found similar with a gearbox I pulled from an EA82. Resolved it as I had to pull it apart. -
For the ease of translation I am going to use my left seat from 93-2000 Impreza to ask questions Having done a few not so straightforward seats into EA81 before - I think I see these as another The inboard slider rail looks OK but the outer !! is there a step by step 101 on dealing with this task? How much of Impreza slider goes? How much EA81 stays? Additional materials? i am looking and thinking ...if only I could take the pressed metal arse bucket of the Impreza and make it fit my EA81 to do away with egg slicer like wire support springs any help appreciated

Try googling ignition coils, resistor or no resistor Coils also state use with igniter, not confusing things? 12v IGN hits resistor to drop it to about 8v for you to measure at coil + if you have points dizzy with IGN on and running if I got it correct If you have no points normally with these old things you have no resistor and coil gets 12 v at coil +

Current daily driver is EA82T sucking air via air filter box>>> >>>Impco 200 complex mixer >>> >>>>IHI factory turbo>>>> >>> throttle body>>>> >>>>Intake manifold>>>> Going against Impco's 1970s manuals and 2000s Impco Australia's advice to go blow through, did not work, could not drive it due to wierd intake pulses of a four pot turbo Yet northern hemisphere guys do blow through no worries ???

Kits ! Bud, we are lucky to still be able to get some parts for this era vehicle, let alone a kit I have done a few different EA81 dedicated not dual fuel systems. I prefer to do it the hard way to get a bullet proof reliability using Impco simple converters, complex mixer set ups The easier way I have never seen On an EA81is the Euro Style with complex converter, simple mixer systems. These use an intake air stream gas ring to tack on , or rather, mid air stream before carb. Work better with EFI designs not carb. Not enough bonnet clearance to easily spud on a mixer ring between carb and air box unless it is a lifted Sube My first was on twin carb. Picture twins without air box I made an intake out of 50*100 SHS about 10" long cut hole for each carb top lip and each filter hold down stud was held in place from up top side with custom nuts that were topped with flat washer. The long nuts sat recessed inside the SHS with O ring sealing between flat washer and SHS it was that tight under the bonnet used pliers to remove flat washer topped nuts each end of SHS capped intake air and gas mix entered 90° at the front between carbs and radiator complex Impco 125 mixer was mounted custom again on to an AC mount. took jack out. Mounted VN Commodore air box in place thus air box enabled back fire spring mounted flap and redesign of PCV system and catch can i used a steering rack boots for its flexibility to get filtered air of body mounted air box to engine mounted Impco mixer brazed up the dizzy advance control limits a bit - only on the first one. Most theory for LPG conversions is based in V8 and the 60's and 70s Or maybe not doing this for #2 is what killed it at 120,000 km ?? Tank mounted in front, top side of rear tray. The bigger the better I reckon. One litre of LPG weighs about 70% of most wet petrols. Also only has about 80% the energy in pre ULP theory 100 litre water capacity tank holds 80 of LPG i ran out at 720 km - ONCE coz needle stuck just above E just checked you out - you will handle it easy My third EA81 I went to stupid expense to import an EA82 spfi intake manifold for its throttle body, made an adaptor to fit Impco 125 carb/ mixer directly for a much tidier look than my EA81 carb intake adapted to Mitsu EFI throttle adapted to 125 using clamps and silicone tube if I wAs to do another EA81 I would defy all Impco size charts, CFM calcs and up the system to L converter and 200 or 225 mixer and hope it goes as hard as my EA82M did when I tinkered with it .My mongrel was carb block and turbo mpfi twin intake port heads all EA82 stuff. Had a wicked intake growl EA82 spfi inlets seem to be about 6 mm greater inside diameter which may not be good for torque on EA81 until you add EA82 Y pipe exhaust
