Time for a different muffler
karinvail replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How much do the glasspack's cost? -
Those molded 4WD mudflaps that come on the mid-late 80's Soob's - will those fit on the front too? It looks like they would, but I don't want to buy some and find that they don't fit......

Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
karinvail replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Like I said, I wouldn't go putting one on my car.... BUT, wouldn't even a stock bumper do the same as you describe? -
Mine are painted black in the middle and aluminum silver on the outside. I like it WAAAAY better than the stock look. Gives it a much more modern look.

Good point! Yes, breaking the bumper would be far better than tweaking the unibody! -
EA82, 240k, bent valves, replace?

Ya, I remember It was a ''Git-R-Done'' situation though - probably should have thought ahead and done it, but I just wanted a running car! I know how it feels to have a belt break on the side of the freeway - and almost $300 to have the dealer replace them (that happened on my '85 Turbo sedan 15 years or so ago when it had JUST turned 60,000 miles too and we'd had it only 2-3 weeks!) -

well, woodworking is one of my hobbies, so I like it in some ways (but you won't see me putting one on my car, LOL)...... if it were me, I would have done a little more 'fine-tuning' on the shape of the log instead of hollowing it out, but then it would be more board-like than log-like. The holes in it will weaken it's structure. A solid log would be very sound, but a drilled out one will be much weaker...... -

I can't see the pic! Link goes to ''page unavailable'' -
Need Vacumn Hose diagram for Subaru 1985 GL Wagon

My car has the diagram on the inside of the hood on the passenger side.... have you checked there? -

Wow that is a great explanation of how to do the timing belts! I think I could tackle them even if I need to in the future! I notice the page talks about tensioning the belts - when does a person know that needs to be done? I have no clue when my belts were last done on this engine, but my luck it was 59,999 miles ago -
Well, the big @$$ muffler is going this week. Time for something a little quieter. I don't want quiet like 'stock quiet' though!, but this one sounds like I almost have no exhaust at all. I've already had stock sound on all my other Soob's. This one has to be different My husband had a cherry bomb muffler that we held up behind the current muffler and the sound is WAY quieter, but still louder and healthier sounding than stock. What kind of mufflers do y'all have in yours for a good sound? (mine has a custom y-pipe with no cats straight back to muffler of unknown brand/type, but it's big and loud for sure).

how gutless should it be?
karinvail replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK, now I'm scratching my head.... why would a 'dead clutch' cause a car to be gutless? Doesn't a dead clutch just slip and cause shifting difficulties? Personally, I say time for a complete tune-up if that hasn't already been covered. And maybe try running super in it. My car is a dog (EA82 w/Hitachi carb), but it's a complete useless dog without super in it! -
I posted on the marketplace about wanting a cargo cover and got a response from someone that had a grey one, but I would perfer a brown one - interested in selling your brown one? Someone else responded to me that they had a brown one, but when I messaged them that I was interested, they never got back to me the full price with shipping so I could send them a money order (they didn't have paypal). So, I'm still looking for a brown one I didn't save the username of the person with the grey one, but I bet if you post in the marketplace (and try to keep it on the first page), you will get a response.

Air in the cooling system can also do that - I've been ''burping'' mine because it had air in the heater core (I could hear it gurgling) - I think I almost have all the air out now, and I had to add almost a half gallon to the system (and I don't have a head gasket problem).

adding another electric fan is not going to give you more horsepower if that's what you are asking???
-
So, it has one stock electric fan and then the clutch fan? Or just the stock electric fan? Is that not sufficient?

check out this thread - http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33253

doesn't it already have an electric fan? Is it a turbo or have A/C?

I saw an '87 white RX that had a for sale sign in it in the WalMart parking lot less than a couple hours ago in Mt.Vernon - and it wasn't nearly as good of shape as yours - and they wanted $2500 for it! Yea, pot of gold I'd say if they are worth that much!

problems with an 87 gl wagon...
karinvail replied to zach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if the coolant level is low enough, the guage does not work properly because it's at the top of the engine near the thermostat. My guess is that it was low on coolant and the engine got cooked (sounds very similar to an incident I had just a couple months ago that led me to this website in my search for a new engine). I personally junked my engine and put in another engine from a crashed wagon, but it's only because I knew it already had a cracked block before the overheat. Have a look at the plastic covers on the front of the engine that cover the timing belts. Mine were melted *really* badly after the overheat. -
So, the Hitachi one's have screws then instead of clips? Mine has clips. Hmm - the cap I have now has the aluminum inserts I think - but the rotor has a brass end I think? I hope that doesn't make a difference...... OH, and NorthWet - nope, we put the original engine in the engine compartment of the donor wagon before we gave it away. BUT! We did take all the stuff off of it like dist., starter, alt., carb - important parts So, I have another dist in a box in the garage - guess I could compare them!
-
If I could pronounce NipponDenso, LOL! How do I determine which dist I have?
-
Title says it all. This car is the most cold-blooded car I've ever had. You physically cannot drive it until it is up to running temp. It will sputter and choke and die even if it's partially warmed up (showing on the guage). But, it will not run right until it's totally warmed up. It has a very new looking Hitachi rebuilt carb on it - wondering if maybe the choke isn't working properly???? Would that cause it to be so cold-blooded?
-
well, both the cap that is on my car and the wrong one they gave me were/are the clip on style (not screw on). The one in my car has a notch at one side, and the other side has a tab that goes into the dist. for alignment. The one they originally gave me had two notches and no tab and had some sort of vent on the top. The rotor on my car is much bigger than the one they sold me too. I will take the cap in next time - but I guess I'm lazy
-
When I went to the parts store to buy a new dist cap, I gave them the info for what engine the car came out of - but when I got home to install it, the cap was not the correct one and the rotor was completely different too. Upon inspection, the cap that was on it looked almost brand new, so I just decided to return the one I got. Well, the gal at the parts counter wanted to find me the right one, so she brought out the one for the hatchback - and it was the right cap. Are the distributor's different on a hatchback than on a wagon!????? That totally confused me as I assumed they were all basically the same engine and components from the EA82 carbed engines? I am assuming that my dist. must be from a hatchback????? I almost got in an argument with the gal because she asked me before she brought out the cap if my car had a hatchback. I said ''no, it's a wagon''. She said, ''yea, but does the back have a hatch?''. Grrr. Yes, technically, but it's NOT a ''hatchback'', grumble grumble.....
