Exactly my experience.. the computer printout after alignment showed some minor misalignment in the rear, but they said they couldn't adjust it and that it wasn't serious. Car drives fine now... I can even take my hands off the wheel without fearing for my life.

I am a Rank Noob, but it sure sounds like a rebuild would be in order. Blown head gasket/cracked head? How's your temp gauge/oil pressure reading? Also, maybe check the compression again? 0 sounds awfully low even for an engine with big trouble.

Yes, there are alignment adjustments which can be made for your car's rear wheels. It sounds as if you have some positive camber (I think?) which means that the top of your wheel is pointing out a little too much. You might even be able to see it looking at the car, if you've noticed a lot of uneven tire wear. Me, I just took the car to a shop (Firestone, as it happens) when it needed an alignment - they did all 4 wheels for 50 bucks. They have the equipment to ensure it's done right, and measure everything electronically, etc, plus databases of where the numbers should be reading. That's what I'd recommend. If any of the board hardcores know how to Do It Yourself we'd all enjoy hearing it I'm sure!

Okay, I will pull the taillight next time I'm there too (if it's still there). It was good, yeah. Spark, I find Subaru wagons for sale almost daily in the Eugene and Portland Craigslists... eugene.craigslist.org, portland.craigslist.org ... the EA82s usually run $500-1500, depending on equipment/condition.

You can get weatherstripping glue from an auto parts store, it's a special stuff.

Need Vacuum Hose Diagram
critical_max replied to Xerties's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welcome to the board. Suggestion: Use the photo gallery to post pictures if you can, of the mystery hoses. Somebody will be able to identify them and their proper location... I did a quick search for "vacuum hose diagram" on the board and didn't find anything... -
paint ideas for Hass's XT (Dave)
critical_max replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That would be a unique paint job! With the chrome wheels it would be a real head turner. I notice those are the Subaru yellow and blue colors. -
Turbo Motor into Loyale?
critical_max replied to romcat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I had a shop put in a JDM EA82T to replace the severely abused unit that was in my car when I bought it. Labor was about what you were quoted, plus 900 or so for the engine as I recall. You're getting a great deal if your mechanic is switching your car from N/A to turbo though! There is a lot of work involved as I understand it... . -
Update: The XT6 is MINE! ALL MINE!
critical_max replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A friend of mine had an SVX for a while. It's still in town - blue, lowered with white wheels and he sold it to a guy who works at Cafe Soriah, for you Eugene heads. There are at least 3 SVXs running around here. Good things about the SVX: 1) Leather, wood, true GT car stance/seating. You feel like you're sitting on the ground. In a Ferrari. 2) Wide sticky tires and heavy car, grips like a mofo. I've never felt the like! It's possible to take an SVX around ridiculously sharp turns at speed... 3) Enough power from the 3.3L boxer 6 to take advantage of ALL the grip Of course, it is pretty heavy with all those goodies... I bet the XT6 is much ligher eh? -
Try gluing the weatherstripping back in place? That will tell you if it's the problem.

A VW transmission? Are you building a buggy?

Turbo Motor into Loyale?
critical_max replied to romcat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The EA82T was standard equipment in a lot of GL-10s and Loyales, so your best bet is probably to find one that already has one! Everything from coupes to sedans to wagons. They have 113 HP as I recall, which is a nice boost indeed from the naturally aspirated EA82 (pardon the pun). Fuel mileage is similar or maybe a little worse, depending on your driving style of course -

congrats, that sounds like a very cool project car. post pictures when you can. the true AWD coupled with the flat 6 = proto-SVX !! And if you've been in an SVX you know why that's a good thing. -
Here's a picture of an 81 GLF coupe. It's definitely out of commission, but it's also definitely a GLF

Okay, so I went down to the local Pick'n'Pull and got me a bunch of those little plastic trim screws, as well as helping a buddy find some brake caliper bolts for his 86 Nissan 200SX (we finally found them in an 80s Stanza tall-wagon). On the way I saw lots of soobies... here are the photos. Plus an alien that I couldn't resist. A Brat with nice decals and intact grille (I have nice photos of the decals for that sticky thread later). A fairly uncommon GLF coupe: A wonderfully rust-colored EA81 GL sedan: A fairly clean EA82 GL sedan: An elusive EA82 GL coupe: An old EA81 hatch, looks like a DL? A sad-looking EA81 DL wagon: A strikingly nice color on this EA82 GL-10 4WD Turbo - I wanted this car to live so badly! It's hard to see but that's a deep metalflake blue. And last but not least of the Soobies, an ECVT Justy: Here is an oddball I couldn't resist photographing: an old Opel coupe. My dad drove one in the 70s and told me it was his favorite car ever. Course, he's never driven a Subaru : So, as you can see there are lots of Subarus in this yard, and the prices are reasonable as it turns out (we were charged $1 apiece for the bunch of screws and the bunch of bolts). If anyone needs Subaru parts in Eugene I'd recommend the Pick'n'Pull up Highway 99 as a place to check. They also have a lot of newer gen Legacies.

Alleywagon is TOAST!!

My condolences. I vote for the 86 GL wagon. The old carb'd wagons rock. -
Thanks for the paint advice, Caboobaroo! My back bumper is so faded it looks like marbling. Sweet82: The GL isn't mine, it was just there on the street where I was parked. hehe. there are *lots* of old Subarus in Eugene. And yeah, if it was mine... I'd be tempted to put the same plates on both cars though it's strictly illegal, not to be done, yadda yadda Trogdor: I can only imagine what insane abuse this car received at the hands of its previous owners, given that it had cracked heads and a single row radiator when I got it (apparently somebody made a terrible choice when replacing the OEM radiator). Twin row now. I bet they caught a lot of air, yeah. I know I've (ab)used the suspension since I've got it... not on jumps, but an access road I couldn't resist the other day turned into a hillside when one rut of the road rose up a couple of feet ... I just kept on going, my buddy asked me if the car was gonna roll and he was only half joking *must remember to go slow off pavement*

Yeah, I have yet to acquire a real bodywork kit, so there are a lot of little dings to fix (and maybe pulling dents in fenders). Getting the metal plate under the bumper replaced was harder than I thought it'd be, because the fenders and unibody (near radiator), which it bolts onto in a dozen places, are all a tiny bit off, apparently due to the front impact that messed up the bumper. Ditto for pulling and replacing the bumper - the bolts REALLY didn't want to come out, it took a couple hours to pull.

Subaru brat charging problem
critical_max replied to AKIRA's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I concur, I had to retighten connections at the back of my alternator a month after installing it because the output bolt's nut came loose. Double and triple-check that stuff. Make sure your battery cables/posts are clean. Is there any corrosion or such on anything? Test all the wires with a low ohms setting with your multimeter, end to end to make sure resistance is low. Also, how are your grounds? Another thing for the multimeter. Make sure you have good ground from block > unibody. This is the sort of thing I checked when working this problem out, anyway. Good luck! -
Okay, here are the promised before-and-after shots of the bodywork I had to do to the RX... with the amount of bodywork it needs, I can't believe I even bought the dang car, but it certainly wasn't for the "pretty" factor. Before (headlights unadjustable at this point due to bumper pressure): After (replaced bumper, metal body piece below bumper, managed to get at least 2/3 of the bolts in place with the new parts!) The car behind is a GL of the same color - the RX rides a lot taller! Next step is to make both bumpers match - flat black spray paint should do the trick.

just grounded the alternator wire, help.

Awesome! glad I could help shed some light on this one. Were you able to match the color of the blown link when replacing it?
