BRAT ECM - Possible Problem...?
oczuk32 replied to DonCordier's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Reviving this post cause my wagon is starting with the same issue. Has anyone come up with a solution or the cause? Currently, I unplug the and plug the wire harness to get the ECU to work. Then when it sits for a while like the next day. The wagon won't start until unplugged and plug the harness to the ECU. -
So my 84 wagon turbo is foaming up the radiator and running hotter. I'm 80 percent that its head gaskets compression leaking into the cooling system. What is the best head gasket that has been used with good results? I've seen MLs (MULTI LAYER STEEL) head gaskets for newer subaru's but not for the old gens. Or should I just go with the Felpro permatorque head gasket?

Rock Auto. You have to pop out the rivots on the old lifters and modify the mounting bracket just a bit. -
EA81 Won't Idle When Warm

Check you temperature switch. Unplug it and if motor stays on then you would have a bad sensor. I had that issue with my 84 wagon -
That would be great. Are you making your secondary electric fan run at a cooler temperature?

My ea81 turbo wagon fan clutch is starting to fail. I try online and it seems like it never exist. I only find the electric fan. Also on my service manual it will not show the mechanical clutch fan. Anybody know of a compatible fan clutch or should I upgrade to a electric fan.

I will get bad knock when its set at 15*. So set it at 11*+/-3 @800 rpm. Runs good but getting less mpg..

Since Im still in the oil seal department does the front differential cv joint connection have directional oil seals? And if they do, what would be the part number.

Got them. Thanks guys.

I went to two dealerships and they were clueless. Found some on eBay, lets see if they work by modifying them a bit.

So I'm searching for a valve cover grommet for my 84 Subaru wagon online but keeps coming up with newer subarus vehicles. Are they interchangeable?

I see. Does your electric fan stay in for a long period or shuts off after couple minutes. My fan stays on for a while and with 80F ambient weather.. I will do flush on Saturday and see how it goes. Thanks -

So I made a temporary coolant reservoir and top off the radiator to the cap. Drove the wagon for a bit release the pressure to get the bubbles out of the hose. Still running hot. Even the electric fan is staying on for longer periods. When I open the cap to see whats going inside. I dont see any flow or resemblance of coolant flowing thru the radiator. Scratching my head now. It wasnt getting hot when it was running rich in fuel mixture about couple weeks ago. Hopefully those are hot presure air bubbles and not cusbustion leak bubbles. Needle above normal operating temperature. Usually the needle sits on the line or below it. -

Ok. Ive replace the cap about a month ago with a 13 lbs. But not sure if its a recovery style. I will inspect it tomorrow and see if I could make install some kind of coolant recovery bottle.
