  1. I think I know what you're talking about being in the dash... I had a '96 Outback that did that after about the 10th camping trip that involved miles and miles of rough gravel roads started making a similar noise. Never figured out what it was though...
  2. Yeah all first gen AWD 5spd 2.2 Legacys were 4.11 final drive. I had a '96 2.2 5spd Outback and it was 4.11.
  3. I'm assuming it's a 5spd d/r? That car, with an EA81 and SPFI is my absolute dream car. You should plan the SPFI swap down the road. I LOVE the EA82 body but don't care for the engine. That's my favorite color too, and it's pretty common.
  4. The only reason the headgaskets would ever go is if it gets overheated and warps them. If your cooling system is up to snuff (NEW water pump, new Subaru thermostat, new heater hoses, new radiator hoses, new whatever other coolant hoses I'm forgetting), then the original headgaskets would be fine. Definitely seal the valve covers and oil pump while it's out though. Rear main may be alright, but that's a fairly cheap seal. Might wanna do it anyway.
  5. Like he said ^ the intake in the car will bolt right onto the motor. I think you'll need to run extra wire to reach the disty too... and I honestly wouldn't even bother removing the heads. If it was an EA82 yeah, but that's really your own personal call.
  6. Did you use Subaru intake manifold gaskets? The same thing happened to an EA82 I had a few years ago, I figured it was just the cheapo intake manifold gaskets but I hate the EA82 so much I just retired the car.
  7. Sounds like a sway bar bushing. Will make a clunk when approaching a grade or bump AT AN ANGLE. Struts don't behave that way. Seen people complain about the same thing many times and struts are always blamed, but it's usually sway bar bushings.
  8. I've never driven one without the roll pin due to the axle being 180 degrees off, but I've used nails in place of the roll pins. I wanna go out on a limb and say as long as you're not beating on it alot it should be alright, but I can't say for sure.
  9. You should definitely go with the EA81. No timing belts, easy swap, far less likely to crack the heads than the EA82 if it overheats. It's a little smaller so there will be more room in the engine bay to move around, and it's more work to reseal an EA82 because there's the cam tower between the head and the valve cover. EA82s are alright, but it would have made alot more sense if Subaru just dropped SPFI EA81s in every ea82 body instead of the ea82.
  10. Just throwing this out there although this is pretty much resolved... I believe you can remove the rear section of the driveshaft and tow it on a dolly. I've done that with a '95 Legacy 5spd.
  11. Why in the hell is there an EA82T under the hood of that Brat.
  12. They make rainguards specifically for cars without window frames. There's JUST enough clearance so that the window doesn't hit them. They made them for Legacies, I don't see why they couldn't be made for Loyales/GLs too. Google search Subaru rain guard and you'll see some.
  13. Got it for $100 and it looks great. Upon further inspection it's been carefully spray-painted. Pulled the plugs, both driver side cylinders have standing water in them. Tilted it nearly upside down and got most of the dark brown water out. Tried to turn the motor all the way over and it'll go about 3/4 of the way around. You can hear the rings scraping rust until they just stop. You guys think there's any hope for this engine? Maybe a rebuild? I'm not sure if the standing water is because of a headgasket or the engine just being left out in the rain leaning on the driver side head without a carb, funneling water into those 2 cylinders. I'd really like to salvage it, otherwise it's almost a complete waste of money. I've never dug into an EA81... I guess this might be a good candidate for hands on practice.
  14. You're asking the wrong person. I loathe EA82s. I've had quite a few, but it's been so long since I've even seen under the hood of one I couldn't tell ya.

  15. Anybody know who these guys are? Those Fozzies would have been BRAND new.
  16. I know the 6spd and CVT get pretty darn close fuel mileage wise, I think the CVT gets 1mpg better around town (I don't feel like googleing it). But look at the advantages of towing with the CVT and also offroad use, you'll probably be going through clutches trying to tow with the 6spd. I've also heard stories of people getting mid to upper 30s really close to sea level on flat ground with the CVT (that could very well be possible with the 6spd as well). I do believe the 6spd could provide better mpgs in hilly terrain because you could downshift. Most people don't do that, but I nearly always downshift if it's a fuel injected car (saves fuel AND brakes).
  17. Jatco built the transmissions, same company that built the Dodge Caliber transmissions and those trannys are holding up very well. I've heard alot of stories of Outbacks towing popups on long roadtrips and doing extremely well. Only time will tell if they'll hold up. As for slow, just look at the 0-60 numbers and 1/4 mile times. They're average, might just be the effect of the engine droaning at a constant rpm.
  18. Who's butthurt? The reversal problem seems to be pretty darn rare... and there's always the possibility it's the drivers not having balls enough to use a little momentum with full throttle. Hardly a "nightmare". I test drove one back in 2010 and really loved the way the CVT worked. Car felt a bit soft for my liking, definitely preferred the 5spd Forester by far.
  19. Maybe you should watch some youtube reviews before talking smack about the CVTs. This is a good way to start bs rumors.
  20. Yeah that's one of the big things about the CVT people like. You can put it in manual and use the "gears" to help keep your speed down going downhill. Heard it helps with pulling trailers too to keep speed down.
  21. Definitely looks to be a Les Schwabb. Good luck finding a matching set... all you'll find are regular wagon wheels. Be sure if you buy more to have a full set you compare pics very carefully.
  22. That's a screwed up way to be taken out of the world... but this world is mostly pain and suffering anyway. He has moved on into the next stage of existence. Must have just been his time. It's always hard for those left behind to deal with the loss, my best advice is to find inspiration in things that just keep going no matter what. You're on a Subaru board, that's a darn good start.
  23. About 5 years ago I took a trip from here in E. TN to Golden Colorado, swung up to Missouri Valley, Iowa both there and back to see my dad (was working up there at the time). It was in an '87 GL 5spd 4wd. I lost feeling in my right thigh and it didn't come back for 2 weeks. Ever since then, if I sit for more than an hour I loose feeling in my right thigh. I would suggest better seats or at least a pillow for extra thigh support. Did you have any trouble with your seats on your first burning man trip?
