  1. Did you remove the heater hoses? And be sure and fill the block via the upper radiator hose and not just the radiator cap.
  2. Have had two sets of brand new parts store axles click straight out of the box, so be aware that's possible. And also, if you're tapping the axle pin and it suddenly feels like it's not moving aka the hammer is actually bouncing off the pin when you hit it nice and square, then stop immediately or you could ruin the tapered bearings in the front diff. May not be recommended but I just use a long nail and bend it so it can't fall out and also ran an '84 2wd dl without any pins OR nails for almost two years without incident.
  3. I take it the Forester strut lift gains the most clearance? That looks pretty lifted. Being that mine is my daily and I cover a whole lot of miles for my job, I don't know that the axles would like that... maybe when it gets retired lol.
  4. 258,455 miles and counting. 4eat AWD, could use a little more clearance but suits my needs perfectly fine.
  5. I vote CV axle. Had a bad left front on a GL that would act exactly the same way. Engine didn't seem effected, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, but as soon as I let off it would cease but I would have to drive slower until I got up the hill. Also had a Legacy with a sticking rear caliper and I had a similar problem but it was more speed related. The faster I'd go the more violent the vibrating would get. Of course I also noticed the car seemed more sluggish so that may not be your issue but next time you come to a stop after a bit of a drive just touch each wheel around the lug nuts/hub and see if any of them are considerably hotter than the others.
  6. Could be the rear brakes sticking. I had a sticking caliper on a Legacy and it resulted in violent shuddering and noticeable sluggishness. Also was much warmer on one side than the other so you could look at that as a possibility. I'm guessing you have rear drums, not sure how often rear drums stick. Have you done any brake work on the rear?
  7. Your emergency brake is probably stuck. Had the exact same problem with a scraping noise and after driving a while, violent shakes. If it's not the rear brake caliper(s) and it's not the bearing, it's the e-brake.
  8. I noticed an instant increase in fuel economy when I put a k&n filter in my 90 Legacy. Around 1.5mpg increase. I drive 150 miles a day so it didn't take long to notice.
  9. 1994 legacy wagon 4eat awd, highway with lots of hills I get 28 as long as I keep it under 70mph. Got 30.5 on a freak tank once though.
  10. Had an old K&N air filter from an '89 EA82 sedan I had years ago, decided to see if it would fit in my Legacy. IT DOES!!!! AWESOME!!!!
  11. Mine is an automatic, but I honestly thought ALL autos were 4.11 or 4.44 final drive and only the manual transmission cars came with the 3.90. My rear diff has a 3.90 tag on it. Was I just wrong or is my car weird?
  12. Hmmm... my hardtop with a Weber and NO choke would start in -10F weather but had an oversized battery. Maybe it needs the extra juice to turn the engine fast enough to hit?
  13. You might want to make sure the cooling system (thermostat, radiator and hoses) is up to the task. OEM thermostats only.
  14. This car means a lot to me. I'm getting back in the Subaru game with the first AWD Subaru since I lost my Outback and I lived out my lifelong dream of driving a Subaru in several inches of snow in that car but it also allowed me to help my friends during such times, like going and getting them kerosene when their power went out. And what did I do today? We had an ice storm yesterday. I gave a friend a ride to his relatives house where they had power, brought my mom food and stopped to help somebody who just totaled his grandfathers old Chevy pickup. Seeing him wheep over that truck made me realize that cars are such a gift to us. We can travel at speed comfortably and, hopefully, safely. When the salt clears but before the pollen settles, let's dedicate a day to washing all the salt off of our chariots of freedom. A Subaru deserves nothing less.
  15. Sorry meant for that to be 28x,xxx. She's somewhere very near 290,000.
  16. That was somewhat of a possibility but just after it happened her motor got a burnt valve so we just swapped my motor in. Still on the road pushing 280,xxx miles. My sister really loves that car. It got her home from work despite the terrible conditions these past couple days and has always been reliable. That's more than can be said about anything else she's had.
