  1. More than half the Subarus I've seen were manuals. I've heard emissions, the gearing of the manuals, not being able to make an automatic that can handle that kind of torque... so many reasons. I hope they can work it all out. The 2010 Outback (according to a brochure) has a towing capacity of 2,700lbs. But it does not specify which transmission. Seems to me like a CVT would be an excellent transmission for towing being that the gear ratios are infinite.... but there's alot more to a trans than ratios.
  2. Now why in the hell would Subaru have trouble getting the 2.0TD to pass emissions? Are they idiots? Volkswagon did it with an inline 4. Surely to The Powers That Be, the boxer design (which from my understanding is naturally cleaner running) would make it even easier to get it to pass emissions. This is BS.
  3. It's awesome to hear the coupe's running beautifully! That's such a gorgeous car. You're so lucky to have one in such nice shape. Really excited about seeing it after the restore. Maybe someday I'll be lucky enough to see it in person. I saw a coupe at the JY yesterday and that's why I'm so excited about yours running. Never realized how awesome they were until I finally saw one up close and personal.
  4. Be sure you look up how to properly break in a freshly rebuilt engine. A properly broke in EJ22 should last well past half a million miles.
  5. I really don't know anything about the cooling systems in the newer cars, but it seems to me they're so reliable nowadays that it's almost unecessary to have a temp gauge. As long as the hoses, thermostat, coolant flushes, and water pump are done at proper intervals there should NEVER be any issues with cooling. Early EJs (EJ22s, EJ18s) could have gotten by without temp gauges. It is, however, a necessity on an EJ25 or an EA82.
  6. I have 4 junkyard struts off an early model Legacy on my Impreza and they work just fine. Got them off a low mileage car.
  7. Awww shucks... you're nicer than I am. I think you may have said one cuss word the entire time we talked haha. Man that pisses me off about the CV... the last time I checked the boot looked intact but the metal band seemed loose and I thought it was just seeping out. Explains why the odor of grease got so bad all of a sudden... lol. "Hey Jordan, are you aware of your CV joint?" "Yeah it's not the boot it's just the.... #*&%@!"
  8. More like 3, lol. Yes I'm pretty happy with it. So far it's handling being a DD pretty well, but it's only been in commission for a couple of weeks. Hoping the overheat didn't do any real damage, hoping those timing belts hold out too.
  9. The ticking is caused by either the oil pump seals needing replaced or the cam tower o-rings needing replaced. The oil pressure sending unit is probably to blame for the oil pressure fluctuations. That's a very common cause for low readings.
  10. Finally got pics up. Advance Auto thermostat for now and new radiator. Have a Subaru thermostat on standby. Right now it's my dad's ride to work and back (80 mile round trip). Throwing a code 34 CEL and gets 24mpg. That will be fixed someday... maybe. Or I'll say the hell with it and go EJ22 or EA81. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/Subarus/Picture006.jpg http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/Subarus/Picture004.jpg http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/Subarus/Picture013.jpg http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/Subarus/Picture012.jpg http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/Subarus/Picture009.jpg Has some surface rust but that's about it. Engine bay is nice and clean but is leaking oil from driver side headgasket. Leaks about a quart every week. Can't wait to ditch the EA82. Runs good, just a trash engine in my opinion. So far I've: Replaced passenger side axle, installed CD player, replaced radiator, replaced thermostat, changed oil and coolant. What it needs: DIFFERENT engine, shocks, right front ball-joint, a good cleaning.
  11. Does anyone know if an Outback nudge bar would fit a '93 Impreza? Or if there is a nudge bar that fits this model? And if so where could I find it besides the dealership?
  12. EA81 rad will fix your problems. That ***************ty single core is junk even if it's not clogged.
  13. Don't know yet, haven't even gotten it home. When I get the Impreza coupe out of the yard, I'll bring it home. Giving the coupe to my nephew who's about to go to college in Virginia. As soon as these headgaskets let go (probably won't be too long from what I've read about EA82 headgaskets) I may swap everything in the sedan (EJ22, rear discs, rear subframe with swaybar) to the wagon. I think I would be a little more motivated to get the EJ22 running if it was in a d/r touring wagon.
  14. I would LOVE to go EJ, but I'm lazy and would rather drop it in, bolt it up, and crank.
  15. No the smoke is definitely burning oil. Bad news though... Drove beautifully on the trip home but I was driving it a few hours ago keeping an eye on the temp... Finally I relaxe and about 10 mins later I hear a crackling under the hood (predetination I think). I look at the temp gauge... JUST below the red. Pretty much touching it. So I immediately shut the car off and pull over. Still sitting in a parking lot. I'm thinking it's the thermostat, I'm going to go back tomrrow and remove it and see what happens. I need to put the damn steering wheel back where it's supposed to go, can't see the temp gauge with the wheel upside down (wonder if that's why it's upside down lol). So my question is. How long do my headgaskets have? Worse comes to worse, I'll ditch the EA82 and go EA81 (will eventually be lifted anywayz, and if I go EA81 it's getting a snorkel).
  16. I actually found the one from my '89 sedan and put it in today and burped the system, now I just need a ride there so I can bring it home. The interior is mediocre. Nothing really spectacular about it. But the engine bay on the other hand, that's clean as a whistle. Also realized while I was under there the driver side head gasket is leaking oil externally but saw none in the coolant. Should I be worried about that? Does smoke alot...
  17. Yeah they were really friendly. I don't think they were aware of the warming issue because it didn't do it for some time but then just got worse and worse leading me to believe there's just a bunch of gunk trapped in the rad or maybe even the heater core. I'm having a friend pull it to his house and we're going to do the radiator and flush the heater core. Should be good to go then. I was somewhat expecting it to start getting a little warm being that it didn't see much highway driving, but I didn't think it would be that bad. But hey, it's a d/r touring wagon. How could I complain? Calling Subaru for a thermostat today and going to look for a rad. Should be ready to go by the end of the week, it'll be a few days before I get a rad.
  18. Didn't quite get it home but I got it. Made the first 30 miles of the trip fine but started getting warm and the problem progressively got worse. Couldn't even cover a mile without it getting 3/4 of the way up the gauge. Never let it get to the red though. It's about 30 miles away from the house but I'm gonna get a friend to pull it within 15 miles and probably have it towed. I'm pretty sure it just needs a radiator. Gonna do the thermostat too anyway. Interior's in fair shape, drove nicely too. All in all I'm really glad I bought it.
  19. Going to have a look tomorrow to make offer. Not offering over $1000. Will post pics when weather's nice if I do pick it up.
  20. Having a fwd Subie with front ebrake is pretty useless on any steep gravel or dirt hill. Glad to hear you're ok. That's quite a quake... That Subie sure does take alot down there. Testimate to how well built these cars are.
  21. Damn that looks badass. Way better than it looked on my phone lol.
  22. Yeah they are kinda rare. I've only ever seen 4 around here. 2 here in town (which I haven't seen again), one in Knoxville, and the one I'm currently thinking about buying. If it's still there next weekend, I'm probably gonna offer $1000. If they don't take it I may push for $1100 but that's the ABSOLUTE highest I will go. If I do get it, I've got some 15" pugs, rear disc setup, and complete rear-end with swaybar on standby.
  23. Looked at a Subaru the other day. Here's the low-down. It's a 1989 5spd d/r TOURING wagon. Been wanting one of those for a while. The Good: 165,000 miles and ran well. Shifted nicely, clutch pedal seemed a little sticky but grabbed good. Red paint is in good shape. Interior really only needs cleaned a little. No Rust whatsoever on undercarriage visible. Engine bay VERY clean. The Bad: Needs master cylinder. Some clunking from the rear, don't know what it is. Surface rust on both rear quarters, wasn't bad though. Some rust on the front fenders. Only driver side window works, the others either don't move or get stuck. Contacts need cleaned? Cracked windshield, but not bad. Theyr'e asking $1595. DEFINITELY not willing to pay that much. Was bought off a guy who had it since 2000 and used it as his "farm car". So here's my question. What do you guys think it's worth? Don't see many touring wagons around here and I've always wanted one. Would be perfect for camping which I do often.
  24. I had rust even worse than that on an '87 gl wagon and got into a head-on collision with a Taurus, fairly low speed though. Pushed the engine and transmission back slightly... but it didn't break in half.
