  1. During winter when I usually let it warm up a few minutes before I drive, I get right at 30 on straight gas. During the summer I MIGHT hit 36 if I drive it easy. I got 41 in my '89 GL once, it was quite a bit better on gas than the Impreza. This car has definitely seen it's share of high RPM action. It seems to love it. How many miles on that transmission? And is it a straight swap? Have any clue if the gearing is the same as the Imprezas? Someone in NC has one and that's quite a bit closer to me but it really depends on the mileage.
  2. 1993 Impreza 2wd 5spd EJ18. 235,000 miles original engine and transnmission. A few ?'s... I replaced my thermostat O-ring today and applied some sealant to stop a leak that was at the housing (my fault for not doing it right the first time). Pulled it up on some ramps, drained the coolant and replaced the ring, filled it with coolant as much as I could and then started it and let it run at full temp for about 15 minutes or so keeping an eye on the temp gauge. Added coolant, some bubbles came out, added coolant, some bubbles... ya know, the usual cooling system bleeding. Finally it seemingly stopped and I put the cap on and added coolant to the overflow. Now my cooling fans stay on alot more than they used to. They stayed on pretty much all day today despite it being fairly cool. Did I bump something? Could it overheat without showing up on the gauge? I kept an eagle-eye on the temp gauge and it didn't budge, nor has it ever. 2nd Queston: While standing outside of the car I heard a loud, high pitched screeching noise. Seemed to be coming from the bellhousing. I pressed on the clutch pedal and it stopped for a few seconds and then came back again. So I just TOUCHED the pedal and it stopped for a few seconds. Revving the engine also stopped the noise. But at idle when the engine is warm it can be heard from the outside, but not from in the cabin. The throwout bearing only makes noise when the clutch is released, correct? I will be posting this in the WTB section as well as here. Does anybody have a low mileage 2wd 5spd Impreza transmission for sale? The last time I drained the diff grease it looked like somebody threw a confetti party inside my transmission.
  3. It just so happens I found a section of harness in my dad's trunk right before he went to California and it has that diode. Lucky me!

  4. I think the framed doors is a good idea, although all my GLs were actually very quiet. I was very suprised at how noisy my Impreza was when I first drove it. I don't know what I want more, a diesel Impreza or a diesel Forester. I can only imagine the fuel mileage the Impreza would be capable of with a diesel . They seem to be breaking new ground now that they're paired up with Toyota. Don't remember them trying new things like this when they were partially owned by GM... other than Chevrolet badged Subarus in other countries.
  5. Wow youv'e got an awesome lineup of Soobies going! I can't wait to see LB in action in all his EA81 perfection. So, when are you gonna lift the Lego?
  6. Hey. I posted a question with a pic in the new gen and you said it was a Volt Controlling Diode. Is that something I could get just anywhere, or would I need to get it from either Subaru or the junkyard? And where would it be located in the car? there's plenty of Legacies at the junkyard so if I can't get it just anywhere it's no problem.

  7. I sent an e-mail to SOA and they sent one back saying they're working on getting it ready to pass the U.S.'s strict emissions. Depending on how they do overseas, I may buy a Forester. Can't think of anything better than a diesel boxer.
  8. Sorry for the late response. Where would this be found in the car? Behind the dash or under the hood? And if you could give me an exact location that would be helpful so I wouldn't have to spend hours cutting the harness out. I ask because the one pictured isn't my harness and my harness doesn't have that diode, I must have cut it out like an rump roast.
  9. I bought some NGK Iridiums and some racing plug wires and still didn't notice any difference in gas mileage in my EJ18 impreza. Actually think it idles a bit rougher now... I'll stick with the simple and cheap stuff next time. Advantage of the iridium ones though, they're supposed to last a LONG time.
  10. I think he's pissed because he bumped into his car (notice he goes balistic when he notices red paint on that guy's RX).
  11. If she's thinking about a RAV4, she might as well get the Subaru as it's AWD system is more capable. (From what I remember in versing my friend's AWD RAV4 in my 4EAT GL, I owned him in hill climbs and he even had new tires)
  12. Wish I could understand what's going on, lol.
  13. Where do you guys put the ECU? I've thought about just leaving mine sitting in some kind of container where the spare goes.
  14. That's quite the monster you have there. Can't wait to see it in action with a divorced T-case and some protection for that exhaust. I've always thought white EA82 wagons were the BEST looking Subarus lifted.
  15. Good looking car actually, darn good deal you got on that one. I love the look of Neos wagon, that's my favorite color on that bodystyle. You gotta get some extra lights too Connie;)
  16. Great choice in rig!! There's some pretty mean lifted Legacy's in Australia, there's some vids on youtube and google videos of some very capable Legos. EJ22 FTW!!
  17. It's on my EJ22 wiring harness. Just always wondered what it was. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/EJ22%20conversion/DSC_0021.jpg
  18. It wouldn't be too hard to slap a 2.2 in your Outback. Sure less power, but like everybody has said... no piston slap issues, headgasket "issues", no blown bottom ends... There's a Subaru shop near me that has a ton of blown 2.5s sitting around. Every car that comes through his shop with a blown 2.5 gets an EJ22 swapped in it's place.
  19. The best I've gotten this winter was 34 highway, 32 mixed but during the summer I hit 38 highway but I wasn't really trying to get great mileage... so I could probably hit 40.
  20. Was at the park yesterday in my '93 FWD 5spd Impreza and decided to explore the lake bottom a little bit. Tried to stay up near the woods where there was still gravel... but it was no use. Slid to the left some and after turning the wheel right and realizing I wasn't getting anywhere, I put it in reverse and tried to gain enough speed to pull a 180. Well, I only pulled a 90 lol... and so I tried to go forward and turn the rest of the way around but slid straight toward the lake. So I gave up. Called my dad and him and his friend with a 4x4 Toyota Tundra pulled me out with a 20ft tow strap and 50ft of rope. The sad thing is it didn't even look stuck. It was just sitting there on top of the mud... tires looked completely free. I don't have pics of that, but I have some "muddy" pics. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/Subarus/DSC_0015-1.jpg I know it's not much, but I guess that's all a FWD Impreza can do lol. P.S. The black dog is Macy, she's a border collie/cocker spaniel mix. She always gives my car a good smell-over when I get home.
  21. I think people who want to dump their SUVs for something more fuel efficient and rugged are going for Subarus. I have noticed a huge increase in the Subaru population around here. Not only new however... it's becoming more and more common to see EA82s and even EA81s.
  22. I say get under there with a rubber mallet and try to find the noise yourself. Then you'll know for sure it's the exhaust.
