Excess? Vibration through gearstick
Subaru_dude replied to Fox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In my EA82, it vibrates enough to cause the linkage to rattle... probably not a good thing. but mine is bad enough to make alot of noise... does yours make noise? -
I've only put 15,000 on my sedan so far, but other than a pretty crazy ride to Atlanta and back (overheating, engine sounding like fireworks cuz the timing was at 28 deg) it's been very reliable. Even the 5 or 6 massive overheats the day i took the trip to Georgia didn't kill the headgaskets. 210,000 miles. Regardless, it got headgaskets. But I love the thing to death and it loves me so... all is well in my subie world.

Thank goodness it wasn't siezed up... probably because that corner of the car was caked up in grease because eveytime that axle started clicking I would just crawl under there with a handful of grease and slap it in the axle cup and call it good.
-
Yeah, that's why I didn't try that to begin with... I didn't know how much pounding it could take. Well, new ball joints in order for me.
-
I got stuck on an unmantained road in Missouri Valley Iowa once... you shoulda seen the look on the farmer's face when he saw TN tags. "You're from TN and your stuck in the middle of a field in Iowa? In a station wagon? Son... what are you doing out here?" hahaha... man, what a road trip that was.
-
I've already taken everything apart and need to remove the ball joint but it's being quite contrary. I can't put the nut back on cuz it's too flugged up. I've removed that little bolt that clamps it's housing (or whatever that thing is) shut. I've pried and pried, but it's not moving. I think I was supposed to leave the bearing housing in the car to do it... but it's too late now. I've been trying to grab it with channel locks to pull it out but that doesn't work either. What should I do? I need the car for tomorrow so it's kinda urgent. Thanks guys.

Murphy's Down Again...

I got a $500 T-wag too. I'm waiting for something to happen... haha. T-wags are AWESOME!!!! :burnout: -
Yeah that thing looks great. I think an 88' lifted wagon would be SWEET. Nothing catches more attention than a station wagon with a foot of clearance sitting on muddies. I'm waiting for the perfect d/r EA82 wagon to lift. You should definitely go for it. There's no maybe to it, someday you'll be part of the old-gen again.

Nope, that's supposed to be straight. You musta REALLY been having a ball to bend it that bad.

pegged the tac when the throttle cable got stuck on the linkage while I was standing outside of it revving. blew a coolant line to the carb. the line needed replaced anyway.

Head gasket nightmare
Subaru_dude replied to Andy FitzGibbon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, it could be intake manifold gaskets. Try spraying brake cleaner around the intake manifold gaskets and see if the engine changes idle speed. If it does then obviously they need to be replaced. And I know more than just a couple mechanics that just can't get their head wraped around a boxer 4. They just don't get it. -
obviously I know that's not what the noise is... but when I'm accelerating, I hear *clackity clackity clack* under my hood. Only happens when it's warmed up. A mechanic at work rode with me and heard it and took a look at my oil pressure. Then he said... "sounds like your timing is too advance." And then he told me it wasn't all that great for the engine. So now I'm wondering why I can't get the timing right on 20 deg. It's either 25 or 15. Or somewhere around there. Apparently there's a tooth on the disty I'm missing. So is it better to just run it at 15 or 25? it runs like crap at 15, runs ok at 25. but whatever's best for the engine, that's what I'll run it at.

Yeah, you're out there where Subies last forever. Good luck with her, she should be around for a while. I'm sure you know that by now though, you've put that thing through it's paces already. -
I would like to thank y'all..

Oooohhh.... well, great nieces and nephews it is then!! Hopefully I can figure out why my sedan is running like crap (funny, it starts acting up the day I get another car) and it'll be around just as long. -

Why did I have to buy that damn Turbo wagon. I will sell all 3 of my cars just to put that thing in my garage. -
BOUGHT!! new owner of TURBO WAG!!
Subaru_dude replied to Subaru_dude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think I'm gonna keep everything on it stock... for now anywayzz. I changed the oil today after driving it around... checked the transmission fluid level... a bit low so I added a quart and a half. Shifts smoother. This thing runs really smoothly. Gave her the beans... quite a surprise I think a coolant flush and some new oil cooler lines/antifreeze lines, basic tune-up and some fresh gas should be good for now. And as you guys may have noticed, minimal rust. -

Yeah, except you got the little black plastic piece on the front of your wheel well. And sorry about my ignorance on racks, lol. The passenger side has some damage as well, but a wash would do this thing more good than anything right now. -

Here ya go guys. Man she sure is a beauty: Here's the rest of them. If I knew how to make these pics smaller, I would. Sorry 56K. http://s136.photobucket.com/albums/q200/SMASHmySOOByDONTya/ -

I dunno about you guys, but I'm already totally stoked about owning a Turbo. :burnout: Someday, this car will be a real beast at the drag. And yeah, it does only snow 3 times a year (usually not even enough to sled), but the ski racks look awesome anyway. -

I hate to make you guys wait, but I promise I'll have them up tomorrow. What should I name her? She has some aftermarket ski-raks. Looks good. Let's hope this thing grows on the rents before they go ape over all these Soobs... lol. -
I would like to thank y'all..

That story should be contributed to Subiesport magazine. Good job with making Sue happy. Keep her that way, and she'll be around long enough to see your grandkids hopefully. -

I couldn't resist so I went ahead and called the guy, and picked it up and drove it home. Ran nice and cool. The oil pressure reads 0, nothing out of the ordinary. The engine seems quite noisy actually. Was more obvious with the windows up. I'll be doing some studying this week so when the weekend comes around, I can get my hands a little dirty.
