  2. When you put the cam towers back on, go ahead and spend a little extra $$$ and buy anearobic sealant. It dissolves into the oil so there's no danger of any small chunks getting caught in any oil passages.

  5. Okay, it's time to celebrate. Got the timing adjusted, burned the last bit of coolant out of the exhaust... looked for any leaks after bleeding the coolant system, drove it a while, washed it, and it looks AND drives like NEW!!!!! THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT'S OFF TOO!!! It runs cool and quiet. :cool: THE SOOB LIVES AGAIN!!! Thank you all for all the support and your patience. I know I can be a pain sometimes, thanks for bearing with me.
  6. yeah, the injector wires got all messed up so i just peeled some rubber off them and wrapped the wires around the prods, crammed the rubber thing on top and all that's being held down by the aluminum cover. so it started!! I don't know how long it's been since the engine ran, probably a couple years... but it sounds like a freakin diesel. My oil pressure was lower than expected... my other 200,000 mile pump was making 80 psi on cold startup, whereas this 100,000 mile pump is barely making 50 psi on cold startup. It's the same sending unit. i'm not really worried about that... just all the valve-train noise. I'm guessing the hydraulic lifters just need pumped up. This may be a bit drastic... but i'm gonna get everything together and drive it about 20 miles or so. If the noise doesn't stop it's for sale. anybody interested in an EA82 wagon? it's posted in the for sale forum.

I just wrapped the wires around the "prods" and just tested to see if I'm getting fuel... plugged the green connectors in and turned the key on... sounded like something was spraying but no sign of gas... no smell, can't see any. I just thought I'd ask if it's still not getting fuel before I put it back together to find out it still won't start. just air in the lines?
  8. How do I reattach the 2 wires that go to the top of the injector? I'm trying to solder but it's not holding worth a crap. is there some kind of attachement I can buy that goes to the end of the 2 wires? or will I just need to find another injector?
  9. does it leak oil at the oil pump? maybe it's aireating.

  11. '89 FWD 5spd EA82 Sedan. I guess I had my fuel lines crossed. Everybody that I've talked to said that the line coming from the filter should go into the pressure regulator. Freakin ametuers One last question. I took the cover for the injector off to see if anything was happening at my injector. The gasket there is destroyed, so where could I find it? I checked all the local parts stores and all the websites I could think of. Could I just make my own? If I can buy one I'd rather do that but if that's not possible then I could just make one. Thanks a million guys and gals.
  12. I'm pretty sure the fuel pump is working because if I unhook the line BEFORE the fuel pressure regulator and crank it, it spews out a thick consistent stream of fuel. So I haven't seen it necessary to check the fuel pump... maybe the pump is too weak and isn't getting the fuel past the pressure regulator? The fuel line that goes from the filter is supposed to go to the pressure regulator, correct? No, it doesn't have automatic seatbelts. The only wire I unhooked from the coil was the one going to the disty.
  13. it fires with starter fluid... so i pulled the pressure regulator off and cranked it... i should get fuel going everywhere right? nothing's happening. i only took it off the throttle body, i didn't unhook the small hose.
  14. with the injector in there's a noticeable click... so we took the injector out and there was no visible fuel entering the throttle body while cranking. what can be clogged? the line from the filter to the TB is unclogged.
  15. that smell from the exhaust apparently didn't mean it was getting fuel because it's not getting any. not even to the injector. it's getting past the filter, but what about the pressure regulator? is there anywhere else the flow could be restricted?
  16. yeah, i've been zapped a few times. no biggie really, lol. yes, my belts look correct and my rotor screw is still there... rotor is brand new, disty cap new but not BRAND new. i pulled the spark plugs out with the wire, spark.
  17. wow, what the ************ is wrong with this thing. I'm seriously not getting what is wrong here. Spark+fuel=nothing.
  18. as far as I can tell, everything's done correctly now. I'm getting spark, I'm getting fuel... the timing belts, to the BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, are done the way that they are supposed to be done. I pulled the plugs and replaced them with a pair I had laying around (autolites, but they're a little newer than the ones in the car). I'm getting fuel, I'm getting spark. nothing is happening. I'm beginning to think either I'm getting NO compression, or the problem is right under my nose.

I need to know how to set the timing. reading the USRM tells me that the driver side cam has to be pointing up and the passenger side pointing down, and then turn the crank 360 deg to find the 0 deg BTDC mark to install the distributor. a mechanic who has been working on subarus for over 20 years tells me that the driver side has to be pointing down with the passenger side pointing up and the flywheel lined up on the 3 marks to install the distributor. set as he told me, i'm not getting spark. Set as this board tells me, I get spark but the car still does not try to turn over at all. I'm getting fuel, i'm getting spark. The car should by ALL means run, yet it doesn't. I'm getting a code 35 but that shouldn't keep the car from running. The coil is putting out power, and depending on how i do the timing, the disty is putting out power. but it seems when it's putting out spark, the timing must be so badly off that the car doesn't even try to sputter. new spark plugs, new disty cap, new rotor button, new spark plug wires, new air filter, new fuel filter. Fuel+spark=does not run. <--- something here isn't right. I can't figure out what it is. Checked all grounds, they all check out fine. All fuses are good. Fusible links are good. Battery is putting out plenty of power, code 35 will not prevent it from running, and neither would the MAF sensor. If it was the MAF sensor, it would at least try to sputter or do something. WTF is wrong with this thing. It has a fresh reseal, so I'm thinking I did the timing wrong but no matter how the timing is done, it does not run AT ALL.
  20. Checked injector, the power to it is fine. Checked power from distributor to spark plug wires and had nothing. Also replaced the Solenoid with a newer one and had no change. Even tried changing out the entire wiring harness for the intake and still nothing. same code... 3 long 5 short. thinking it's disty... the fusible links are ok. I guess it's time to start honing in on that air flow meter. oh yeah, AND the disty.

  22. I triple checked the wiring harness and all the grounds, pulled all the connections apart and thoroughly cleaned them with brake cleaner. what do i need to check and see if it's even getting any sort of electricity action?
  23. I replace the filter for the hell of it... and checked to see if fuel was getting past the fuel filter by taking off the fuel line right at the injector. fuel is getting there... but not past the injector. so i guess my injector's severely clogged.
  24. Subarus are just special, with or without 4wd. I know how you feel Connie... my car is very special too. even if it's a plain jane 2wd 5spd sedan.
  25. okay, i plugged the green connectors in and i could hear a clicking from the dash, and the fuel pump cycling. i unplugged the green connectors and got my friend to crank the engine while i looked down into the throttle body while cranking, there's no fuel spraying in at all. so what could be the problem? could all of the fuel in the lines have leaked out while the engine was out? i let the car sit there with the fuel pump cycling to give it plenty of time to get fuel to the intake, but to no avail so i'm assuming that's not my problem. double checked the fuses and grounds... all checked out ok. Thanks a million guys. oh yeah, what do i need to check fusible links? i haven't been able to check those.
