  1. I think the hubcaps make it look more like it came from hell, haha
  2. no 4WD production vehicle that I can think of can do this without rolling over several times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOH8IczLo30
  3. yeah, do the water pump. if it's leaking you can only really tell until you do the timing belts. I was completely car-illiterate when i pulled my engine outta my '87 gl... headgaskets, water pump, oil pump, rear main, front main, intake manifold gaskets, oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets... crank shaft seals. oh yeah, belts and hoses too. it really wasn't that hard... a little time consuming being that it was my first time though. but in the case you decide to do the water pump, don't use too much sealant (I forgot what kind of sealant they said was the good kind). just a thin coat on either side of the gasket is all you need. and as for the front main, just pull the belts off, probably wanna take the rad out too to get it outta the way, and remove the main crank pulley. I THINK it's 22mm? could be wrong... use an impact OR a wrench with cheater or breaker bar and rest it against the passenger side frame rail or fender (use some kinda protection there) and crank the engine just a tad. it'll break it right loose!! voila there's your seal. good luck. -Jordan
  4. 1987 soobie wag d/r 4wd 5 spd. carbed and completely stock. with a towstrap, pulled a 1964 stepside chevy pickup straight 6 3 spd up about 1/8 mile uphill. here's a pic so you can sorda get an idea of how steep it is. it's not INSANELY steep... but it was steep enough. 4 lo in 1st did it just fine. there's the car that did it. the only reason I think most 4wd vehicles wouldn't do it is simply because owners of those vehicles are pansys and don't wanna risk breaking anything.
  5. a Toyota is a fine choice. especially a Tacoma, they build em like they should. and actually meet their reputation. neighbor's have a 2001, and it's a helluva work truck. takes a spanking and asks for a beating.
  6. or if that doesn't fix your problem, could be ball-joints.
  7. holy moly. that thing's massive. how far are you driving? it seems like that thing would be a pain to drive long distances... it's massive
  8. OMG. yep, I don't care what everybody else says. GUYS, WE'RE GOIN TO FLORIDA!!!!
  9. if it was mythical, or even great, it would have at least enough power to smoke 2nd and probably 3rd.
  10. haha funny this thread came up. saw the very first soob my dad ever owned ('83 2 dr 2wd 4spd hatch) that he sold to a chevy fanatic, but that car turned him into a soob fanatic. when my dad sold it, the passenger side carpet would get wet in the rain and the darn thing had no undercarriage basically... now has all new sheet-metal, new paint job, and 380,000 miles on the original engine. STILL a daily driver. i talked to him about selling it, but he's gonna drive it till it dies. which will be never judging by the work on all that rust. sorry for the long post, lol 89 gl sedan- 202,000 87 dl wagon- 174,000
  11. yeah, they suck. i had to heli-coil 4 out of the 6 holes when i resealed my motor. i've gotten quite good at heli-coiling. my last car was from Vermont. yep you guessed it, EVERYTHING broke. lol check around at several shops and see what they use for rust penetrant. i found this stuff called "nutcracker" at a local stealership... this stuff's 10 times better than pb-blaster. just stop by a stealership and ask a mech if they use something better than pb-blaster to break down rust... if they got it they'll tell you.
  12. okay, just got the new catalytic converter in today. BUT... it's the section of pipe that has the resonator on it, AFTER the y-pipe catalytic converter. which sorda sucks. but i need to find a y-pipe without a cat. i will post that in the wanted section, just wanted to let everybody know what's up... and that this will hopefully fix it. -jordo
  13. the passenger grabs the oh $#!+ handle and says "OH $#!+!!!"
  14. i dunno... if you live in an area with idiotic drivers, then you could buy an old beater soob and park the "nice" one just for occasional driving. or maybe not even a beater soob... i noticed when I drive my mom's '96 camry or my sis's '97 civic... it makes driving the soob feel SOOOO much better. but if i can afford the insurance, i'm gonna buy a beater and keep the rust free wag in the garage.
  15. that thing's not gonna be able to do anything when it encounters a hill. it should do alright in mud though. get the sledge out, trimming those fenders isn't gonna do anything.
  16. East TN here. don't know much about newer generation cars though. I stick with the old crap.
  17. later is better for me too... need an axle for my sedan, and once i get the cat in my wag i dunno what else it'll need. hopefully nothing. oh wait, tires and a d/r. EDIT: gilnh20 is a new SE member. raleigh, n.c.
  18. sorry about that... stupid computer is freakin out and so am I, lol. yeah, I know what it is now. I remember a neighbor of mine who had a WRX had been on the tail of the dragon... said it was alot of fun. anybody know of any large areas of mud or someplace with lots of deep puddles? there's a mantainance trail in Knoxville with alot of deep puddles... (about 8"-12" deep, but I think they keep it closed off now, and part of it is just too extreme for non-lifted rigs) I think we'd all have a little more fun if some dirt was involved
  19. Welcome to the board. how long have you known about this board? you'll get alot of tips for fixing your car. plenty of experienced subaru mechs here. i think kingsport is a little far for the floridians to drive... but then again it's not like it's really any closer than n.c. kingsport's not far from morristown, only about 60 miles or so. about this tail of the dragon... how difficult of a trail is it?
  20. okay... what days does everybody get off?? i get monday and tuesday nights off... but i think i could manage to get a weekend off if I talked to the boss. who wants to set a date? i'll be getting the cat for my car in about a week so... it should be driveable soon. but it desperately needs tires. but everybody should start thinking of a weekend they could set aside and wouldn't be too inconvenient to anybody at the workplace.
