I went through multiple cities (including Denver, Cheyenne, Seattle, Spokane). It is flexible enough to avoid almost all FM stations. By the way, 89.9 or 89.7 are almost never used or are used by "low power" FM stations..... I encountered no problems at all on my 2200 mile trip. The 3 I recommended I have already tried (and they required no installation) and they also provide 2 hi power USB ports for charging devices. Literally, the perfect device and being less than $15...... an astounding inexpensive solution. Also, as mentioned, if going into your dash anyways, you can get a cheap 1 din AM/FM Stereo with USB, SD-Card, bluetooth, and 3.5" connector.

So, when I picked up my '84 GL, I noticed it had the stock AM/FM stereo. So, what to do.... FYI - You truly don't need to upgrade your unit if the stock stereo & speakers work fine. Let me explain......... Any 1 DIN NAV worth a damn costs over $500. All of that is a pain in the rear to install. I have a $15 solution that requires no installation, and uses the cell phone you already use (which is hopefully either a newer Android or I-phone). In my case, I have a LG Fiesta 2 - which uses the Verizon network (the phone cost me $60 last year) and this phone allows for bluetooth audio streaming... which is the key. So, you already have a smartphone, this only adds to its capabilities and costs you nothing additionally to use. Here is the solution. Get a cell phone holder for your car vent (or the $5.88 Walmart cell phone holder that sticks to the windshield). Then get one of the below Bluetooth/FM Transmitter/USB devices (it plugs into your car's power connection/cigarette lighter). You then take your Smartphone, plug it into the USB charging port - connect your phone via bluetooth to the device's bluetooth. It will then broadcast your bluetooth audio stream to whatever FM station you decide the device should be broadcasting at. I usually pick 89.9 (as it usually doesn't have anything being broadcast locally that prevents the usage of that frequency). I am then able to listen to Pandora or Spotify, listen/look at google maps, and receive/end calls. They are integrated with each other on the smart phone already, so if you get a call... Pandora and Google Maps go silent while you take your call. When the call ends, Pandora and Google Maps audio stream then returns automagically. I even played SlingTV (ssshhhhhhhhh) and my son watched the movie "Guardans of the Galaxy" in the middle of nowhere Idaho in Hi-Definition on the smartphone. And we listened to it in stereo on the stock AM/FM-stereo. This works so well, I am putting it in all of my vehicles. I used this setup in my 1984 Subaru GL Wagon last week (and my cell phone integrated nicely with the stock AM/FM radio)... and multiple people asked me about it during the drive cross country. As such, we no longer need to buy expensive NAV units or rip apart dashboards. Or if you have a bad stock stereo, just get a 1 din stereo that is flat, has USB and it will fit in the stereo's limited space (there is no need for DVD or CD's anymore as music can be played via streaming or you can use a SD Card to store music). Folks - we already buy cell phones, why not use them as our car's infotainment device as well? As a matter of fact, I don't use the uconnect NAV on my 2013 Chrysler 200 Limited (as I am tired of updating the maps for $170 yearly), I just use Google Maps on my cell (Google Maps is updated daily), & I tie into the 200's stereo directly into it's bluetooth connection. So, there are 3 for sale at Walmart (or also at Walmart.com) for less than $15.00. For your case, I'd go with the generic device I posted below (that is selling for $14.97) as it also allows you to start or end calls without touching your phone). I personally use the Monster device & also the cell phone holder in mine costs $5.88 at Walmart & sticks excellent against the windshield. I hope this makes sense to you. Man, you got the '84 4x4 I have been looking for.... and then some (Y&&^T^&IO) lets a car roll into yours? Have you fixed it up yet? Mine is an '84 GL with only Fwd & 5 spd. I'd post a pic, but I am out of space allegedly. So, any luck in getting yours fixed?

Nice. You are putting it in good nic. I've gotta say tho (regarding the other comments), driving the mountains - I only went to 3rd gear twice with my 84 GL (otherwise, it was 4th gear at the worst). I was surprised at the power (with 255,000 miles, I am pretty sure the engine has been gone through). I averaged 70 mph for much of the way (getting 29 - 33 mpg).

I am a little confused. Doesn't California let 25 yr old & older cars avoid being smogged (emissions)? By the way, yours is the turbo/automatic trans version of my '84 GL. You have a nice car there.

So, I've been posting elsewhere on the Ultimate Subaru forum, and thought I'd stop by here and say hello. Frankly, I am a Car fanatic (and was JDM before it became a term). I am also a Mopar fan (I administer the Chrysler Sebring/200 Convertible Club website/forum.... www.sebringclub.net ). I am also a Lincoln fan (& are a part of that community as well). Ever since my wife passed away in 2016, I have been collecting cars (to fill the void I guess - but it is a passion nonetheless). So, here is my (new to me) 1984 Subaru GL Wagon FWD w/ 5 spd & 255,000 miles. I just drove over 2,000 miles from Yakima, Washington to Illinois. It will not be used at all during the winter (due to the salt used here) and I got it here just in time before the first snow. I have a local body shop, who has seen the car & normally wouldn't touch any rust on any car (as they cannot warranty the work).... but in my case - they are making an exception. It helps that Ketone Colors' HQ is here in Huntley (so we can source/match the original paint). My goal is to have the rust re-mediated during the next summer (a great father/son project). My family (especially my brother, the Mustang aficionado) does not understand my yearning for a decent GL/"Leone". He had his own '81 DL 4x4 4 speed (which he called "the beast") back in 1997.... but he thinks they are now a waste of time. Ideally, I wish I had a 4x4, but beggers can't be choosers. If there is anyone out there in Subaru Land who would like to trade their 4x4 (1980 - 1991) for my Fwd, I would actually consider it. In the interim, it literally is begging to look like new again. And I'm the idiot who will do it.

I've got to say, I remember that deer bar (it was on my 1981 4x4 back in 1985). Mine also had the center light that flipped open and closed. Are you interested in letting one of them go (it'd look great on my 84). I am also noticing something else in this thread. I am seeing a LOT of broken picture links, and I think I know what happened (as it happened to my online "Chrysler Sebring Convertible Club" forum as well). It appears your forum migrated to "Tapatalk" not too long ago. We (at the CSCC) also migrated in January of last year. www.sebringclub.net We migrated our forum from our own hosted provider and forklifted the entire forum/site to the Tapatalk infrastructure. Luckily, we had a alternative "gallery" at our forum and the Tapatalk admins migrated all of the links (and copied the gallery pictures database into its own location on the Tapatalk server). So many of our images survived the migration intact. It is a shame that a lot of the pics in this thread are broken links, a damn shame. It also didn't help that tinypic.com and other picture hosting sites went bust or ended their free hosting (also breaking a lot of picture links). Anyhow, I just thought I'd mention that I feel for the admins of this site (the migration to Tapatalk was difficult for us also).

And yes, that is a 1978 Datsun 200sx with the 2.0L & 5 spd (I was JDM before the term became popular). And by the way, I am a Mopar guy (not just Japanese cars). By the way, In answer to someone above. I understand that the car is worth what someone is willing to pay, but that wasn't my question. I was asking what others thought this car might be worth (a genuine question since I have been out of the Subaru scene for 20 years).

The light in the glovebox is actually stock (and does work). Also, the GL actually has the updated upholstery (I would have preferred the stock lined insert upholstery, but I won't complain). It is very rare option in GL's (normally it was the GLF or GL10 getting this upholstery). Given that I have owned 8 Leone's, I've seen the gamut of Subaru Upholstery. The upholstery generations were 1980 to 1981, then changed in 1982 to 1984 (or to 1987 also for the GL Hatchback & the Brat). The 1985 Loyale redesign (of course) introduced new materials for each version (the Loyale DL, Loyale GL, & Loyale GL10 or the RX). I literally have had each version since 1985 (here is a picture of me with my first 2 Subaru's with the arrows pointing to them parked in the street - a '81 GL 4x4 4 spd & '83 GL 5 spd). This is what I have owned.
