  1. yah.. stick wouldn't even pop out with car not running... had someone take a 2 min look - checked the fluid- his first guess was that i may be out/ have a leak - would make sense. - gonna check master cylinder. Went back out to start the car this morning (7 degrees out) and car started, stick would move but would not catch - even into reverse. Just grinding. Same with first. We're gonna push it into my parent's garage tonight... I'm just praying I don't get get stuck here with my mum here alone! heh
  2. Greetings from barren Wyoming. Why these things happen when I'm not near a shop is beyond me. Life is nuts right now and I could use a little help / few ideas So I'm stuck in Wyoming for a week. After 300 miles of blowing snow and ice, I pull off i-80 and get to the end of the ramp and I can't get the stick to come out of 5th gear. Clutch in/ Clutch out/ car running/ turned off. I had this happen a couple times last month but turning it off and letting pressure off the clutch for a bit seemed to work. I've not owned a standard car with this many miles on it (not sure when the clutch was replaced) - 240,000 now. Would this be a symptom of a worn clutch? Maybe the springs are getting a bit weak? I don't notice the trouble shifting into other gears quite as often - though (could be coincidence) when on a cold morning, it is a bit tricky to get it to shift into 1st and 2nd. I need ideas - if it's going to be expensive and drawn out, I'm at a place where I could borrow a family member's car. If it's something that a non-subaru mechanic could handle in a relatively reasonable amount of time, I could do that too (as I work at a non-subaru automotive place) I just need to know if I should/ can limp it 400 miles back?
  3. Help! Here's the story. 1993 Legacy. For a day, anytime between 1000-1500 RPM, the brake light and battery light would come on. Then, driving home, BANG! Windshield wipers go nuts, car dies. No over heating, no steam, no smoke, (no history of this either) Walk to NAPA, get replace blown fuse to roll windows up just in time for rainstorm. Tow car home. Think: What could it be? (did i mention this story isn't about me but I get roped in?) (Meanwhile, I'm thinking, "Welp, there's the story for my car... guess it's getting loaned out while roommate's car is dead) Asked around - voted alternator. Go to AutoZone, get old Alt tested... bad. ok..... cool... replace alternator, charge/ check battery... Try again: Key in, Turn key, "RrrrrRrrrrRrrr" "RrrrrRrrrrRrrrrRrrr" Dang Call Mechanic brother in next state over "Dude might be a fuel pump - but check all the fuses first" Go look for fuel pump fuse / relay Absolfnknlutley no idea where it is. Find Fuel Pump door, open it up, turn key to see if we can hear it turn on - nope. Pull Fuel pump out in well ventilated area. Before we buy another or whatever.... WHERE IS THE FRIGGIN FUSE/ RELAY or whatever?! Is there an easier way to test it? Is there something else this problem could have been? Help! I want my car back from my roommate. Thanks Amanda (aka bluesoob, (oddly, the roommate's legacy is blue)(but not blue anymore - a green outback- how rare! yah one with stickers and a yakima rack on the roof! Really? Never seen that one before.) (In Colorado currently)
  4. Hi Mike! I'm new to Denver too! Must be the place to be. I've been on the board for years. Surely there has to be a Subaru Geek Crew in the area (like the ones I found in the NW)?? Shawn??
  5. I'm not introducing myself - although I don't spend as much time as I once did with the Subaru crew. I'm now in Denver/Aurora CO - not sure how long I'll be here... I miss the Northwest with a passion. (I'm still hoping to make it to WCSS this summer!) Anyhow, I'm here. I've discovered lots of independent subie shops. I know, retroroo is in the area but a) I guess I should accept that a 97 Outback is retro anymore - but not in my mind The shop is actually a bit of a drive. I'm looking for something more in "my area of Denver" Cherry Creek/Aurora/Glendale I was looking for related threads and found people in the area that had bad shop experiences.. I'd like to find a good one... Help? Ideas? Thanks Amanda
  6. Ok.. the headlights on my 97 OB are obviously around 14 years old. They are the hazy crud that comes from the years.. I know they do some kind of buffing/ cleaning thing that is offered at the dealership.. I'm wondering if there are any home kits or should i not even bother with my time and just order new ones? -A
  7. Is the engine in a 98 Legacy actually a different engine than earlier 2.2s? so in my continuing search for the "perfect" (at least for the next 2-3 years) car, I've been hoping for the happy combination of engine, tranny, and wagon body. (under $4000) It's proven more tricky than originally figured... Found one. Decent shape too. But a little bird told me that in '98, the 2.2 engine got tweeked a bit to get better mileage to make up for the decreased mileage in the 2.5 Outback (Impreza, Forester, etc) Soooo 1) is it true? - Even into an interference engine with a belt? 2) when was it actually done (if so)? 3) am i better off with a 2.5 outback (after head gasket)? If it's going to only get me a couple mpg's better or be something harder to find parts for or be just as much of a pain... I'd rather just get an Outback.... (unless you convince me otherwise)
  8. I'm Amanda. Not sure what I'm bringing... I don't have a subie right now... (My best friend is getting married Saturday in N. Washington that Saturday - I may not be able to show my face long anyhow...) Whatever I show up in, it won't be fancy...
  9. its all good. i found the info. I just needed to clean my desk a bit. :-)
  10. It doesn't seem to be a common problem on a car with 55,000 miles. But I took it in for my dealer (convenient) oil change and they told me that I had a leaking strut on the front. They wanted something to the tune of 450$ to fix the two front ones. Thinking (WTF?) that someone's nephew was working there and wanted to save the day (or bring in some money for the business), I took it to a friend of mine that owns an alignment/tire shop. The tech there said told me that I didn't have a leaking strut, I had 2 leaking struts and one in the rear that was showing wear. Knowing this isn't technically covered under the 60k powertrain, I did a bit more research. Called around, asked other owners, etc.... (Mind you, this is my 8th subaru and never have I replaced struts until at least 120,000) The best idea that I've been presented was to bring this issue up to the service manager. a couple of people told me that somewhere, somehow they can work crap like this into subaru warrenty/repair expense. I know i drive the crap out of my car but I gurantee that 90% of my driving is freeway/back highway/non winter conditions. I've had a clunking noise (when turning into a driveway for example) in the front since I purchased the car. I took it to three different places to have someone check it out but they never found anything and told me that it was normal and perhaps just an off camber turning angle) My questions now: 1) anyone else had issues with struts on the newer outbacks / under 60k? 2) Has anyone had any luck getting help from their local service dealership for this? 3) would the "ka-thunk" noise be possibly related to the strut itself or installation? I would just like to have some other ideas before I rip the crap out of someone. :-) Please. Thank you. The harmless bluesoob turned black soob - amanda
  11. I know that Judy left the NW/West WA District Service area. Does anyone: 1) know her email address? (She gave it to me at WCSS 12 but I seem to have put it in a "safe spot") 2) know the new District Service Manager Rep for Whatcom/Skagit county? -A
  12. If you need any parts from fellow board members transported anywhere in between, I'll be leaving Bellingham the 12th (thurs) and coming back up the 14th (sat) If you need a ride to pick up your new GL project or gathering parts to finish up your show piece.... let me know... -Amanda
  13. it wasn't me but I've seen him around too... I just look like everyone else now.. :-( My coworkers laugh and point and tell me that I need a child seat in the back.. boohoo.

  18. So I have become attached to my Impreza OBS.. but the need for more clearance and space has become apparent. I'm in no big hurry. I am actually impressed with the gauges and feel of the new outback.. but waiting for the Forester Diesel is appealing too. Anyone with one of these that could throw me a bone?? prefereably, someone who has owned subarus before? (obviously it will only be our Euro friends who have seen or know someone who for the forester diesel) I'm not really what most people would call an impreza person but i don't want to look like a mom... i'm too young for that.. LOL! 1 2 3 GO! let out your suggestions! or just tell me to go get a Jeep....... -A
  19. Jeff were you planning on going down on Friday??? Please say you were... Please...... anyhow, I'm thinking it will take approx 5-6 hours with traffic to get there from M.V. Are you able to leave Friday early afternoon or???? Greg/Zefy???? Come on... I know you can cross the border,.... amanda
  20. Is anyone still planning on taking their bikes (non-motorized) (MTB) to WCSS10? I'm not sure where some good trails or single track may be. I wasn't even sure if there was time?
  21. where should we plan to meet and when? I may take a couple days off from work before the show. Soooo knowing where and when may be good... Heeeyyyy.... there is an empty lot next to the bike shop in burlington. lol or else we could meet near Best Buy just off the highway- across I-5 from Skagit Subaru???
