  1. Very nice lift and look. I think they look natural with a lift and dirt on their paws. nice... can't wait till I can do one of mine.
  2. ??? don't know if it is a solid number 300K but, yea, that is alot of miles for any engine, so lets say you pick it up for $100 (good tires? +$), $50 to relicense and misc., then a motor goes, find a replacement ea-82 for $200, your still o.k.. as you have a $300 running roo. Or it may be fine and go to 400K miles... who know's? It has been said here before, at that age and millage they should be paying US to take them off their hands... an 86 is like 22 years old, in dog years.... that's a bunch more... :-p , so cheap as cheap can be is the game plan or what ever you can afford. Promise him it will be going to a good home and all you have is $100. I got a nice 84 Hatch in my drive way that way, some issues but we call it our bonding time as I fix them. (G.D. $200 is a good target)
  3. Lets say the engine doesn't stop ticking after the sea-foam... then a main bearing goes out... or what ever... you shouldn't have to be paying for a "may-be it isn't a problem" when for $500 you can have a good running roo, less miles and only have to put a front axle in or something... so.. no.. it's not a good idea to start at $500.. didn't say how the tires were? bad tires, price comes down... a good deal for you would be $100 tops... however, the owner may be a bit proud and go for $200 I have seen some very good running subaru's sold for $200 or less... but it depends on what's available, how your cash flow is and how bad you want it and how handy you are to work on the cars... also I have seen some rusted roo's sell for alot simply not many around... in your area I can't imagine they are hard to come by? play him alittle... throw out a $100. at him and see what happens... so what if you offend him... there will be another in a month or so just like it.. my 2 cents...
  4. Very nice.... alot of dedication to doing it right the first time was put into your rig and it shows. Someday I hope to be able to do the same... love the lifted wagons.
  5. You spoke volumes of what I like about these cars, the possible: diagnostic and possible "along the shoulder repair" when one has parts on hand, may not always happen but try that with a newer car...:-p Of course with your experience Jerry... I would expect nothing less! Now if you had to create a rudeamentry lathe and fabricate a part from a scrap of road side metal... that would be a challenge!
  6. Been there, done that kind of thing. It happens, what is interesting when you lay in bed and 3:30 am your eye's pop open and you go... aaaaha! It's called the, "New man's hand." you will try to put in a bolt, or mechanical piece and fight and fight and you pass it too the new guy and he walks up and goes.. thunk... right in. Seen it many times. oh.. nice wagon, very clean and good job on the engine. Maybe some day I will get a chance to rebuild one.
  7. A co-workers roo died on him. His carbed 87 wagon that he bought for cheap transportation is blowing coolant out of the tail pipe. He changed both head gaskets, still leaking so suspect cracked head issues.... I have a head from a 1988 EA-82 SPFI engine, will my spare head work on a carberated EA-82. engine. Also; no coolant in oil, no bubbles in radiator.. I suspect crack in head. +1 for all the info below, I will print up and get it too him so he can come up with a plan. Thanks again.
  8. Oh no..... you broke it!!!!! That is going to turn some heads!
  9. Say no more.... I really love free.. even if it is broken. Diamond in the rough... well... maybe not a diamond but you know what I mean:-p
  10. What decision betters the family? Also noted your 46, with a 4 year old! Good on Ya mate!
  11. Yea.. we need pics! and with the snow.. we got alot here in the Dry-Cities too... just got my Hatch running and having a ball... Been years since I have been to Lew/Clrk. Enjoy the snow and your project!
  12. Yes, agree not a crack and probably along the lines of corrosion. The engine walls itself may have thined and possibly could be other issues... but ... the original heater core is still in the Hatch and all other connections look.. somewhat uneffected. Not enough reason's here too scrap a strong running EA-81. Thanks for the input and help. A quick , to Jerry, "Bratsrus1" in Yakima for tossing a head my way so I can get my roo back on the road. I now have only 7months till WCSS#10.
  13. Just a bump too move this too the front page... kind of had me stumped as I looked everything over and over too find the leak... any way... I posted the pic at the front to update.
  14. Thats what I am thinking.. cracked head.... no idea what else it could be.. nor why... The piston heads are black,so no steam in the cylenders so not coming in with fuel... so I guess I pull it and get it tested.... which makes my first Subaru headgasket change out just a practice run:clap:
  15. OH SNAP.... , EA-81 Hatch, 1.8 Changed the head gasket and coolant still dumping out of Exhaust manifold. grrr... I looked everything over reall good... figured it was just a leaky head gasket after I adjusted the valve clearance and found Head nut#1 loose so I put it too proper torque and figured it just started leaking a week later. The bad thing is the Hatch has never ran better... :-\ FOUND THE LEAK!!!! It was between the cast-iron head/flange adapter and my head. It wasn't untill I removed the adapter for the replacement head that I found it...
  16. welcome... rust and all! Treat rust with Rust-mort, maybe some primer and 7 cans of Krylon spray paint for a new color and it will look like ne...... well.. better.. Welcome and yea.. great place! FYI: WCSS #10 in August, Astoria, Oregon, look in the "meet and great" area...
  17. Yes it could go the distance. Look on Craigs list for a cheap tow dolly, license, tag it etc.. and then you can sell it after you get back ... or keep it. As long as the Subaru is lighter then the truck so the tail isn't waging the dog kind of thing. You should have sufficient mechanical skills too save your bacon and not depend on calling others too rescue you. What ever you plan on time...add a couple extra days in there for the gremlins should they attach themselves. On long trips I keep AAA-Delux, 100 miles tow range... used it twice thus far and nice to have to get too the next town kind of thing.
  18. Subaruparts.com, they are in Tacoma WA ... but not sure what is on the East coast (If I want Subaru Parts) . With my 84 Hatch I had the same problem so I just have them look up Brat parts.. same for my year of Hatch.... may work for your Hatch/Brat kind of thing.
  19. Hey, Should the head bolt studs need to be pulled to clean the head gasket surface area to replace the head gasket? Any re-torqueing required if I use new original Subaru gasket? or re-torque required if I use Fel-pro head gasket? Thanks...
  20. Well... I guess I get to bond with the Subaru .... so will take the head off this week and see what I find. Thanks guys... all good... even when it isn't great it's great to be in the game rather then sitting on the sidelines.
  21. Remove loose rust, scale and treat with, "Rust-mort" seal with paint or I used Pro-15 along the under side seam welds where it got crinked from poor jack placement... got that ino from other members and so far has done great... stop that rust.. I am a believer.
  22. It is leaking, down from inside the exhuast manifold, down the exhaust pipe so it was leaking out at the pic. location. I lowered exhaust, put 15 psi... nothing.. bolted exhaust back up and heated engine. Put 15 psi on the radiator, lowered exhaust and it was running green from inside the exhaust head, dripping out the now open exhuast pipe... also; no bubbles in radiator.. so..... am I looking at a probable bad head gasket? Freeze plug etc..? I know I am going to poke the hornets nest with this next comment but what if I were too blank off the heater core, run some "Barrs Engine sealant" and then hook heater core back up.... neighbor made the suggestion but probably not the best solution? I kind of would like to do a head gasket as never done one on the roo's.. so just kind of thinking what would be best.. but yea.... it's cold out there.. WHAAAA...
  23. o.k.... I get the point so possibly I did overlook the obvious... I will pressureize the coolant system this weekend and get in close and see what I can find... possibly the bubbling I saw was tiny exhaust leak bubbles as the coolant was seeping around.. so will take another look... man.. it's cold out... will post answer when I find out what it is.... Thanks guys...
