  1. I hope I don't lead you astray from what the mechanics on this site may say but I am like..... whats the issue here? yha, the books say don't mix but honestly these EA-82'S seem very forgiving, tolerances abound and probably will be fine. First time I had 2 or 3 rattle to the garage floor...ooops.... Your not in over your head. If I can do what you are doing anyone can... just keep asking questions and pics are great... your in the learning curve right now... first one is always a battle and better after that. I take it your doing Head Gaskets? (don't forget about that stupid little "O" ring between the head and the Cam-Tower when putting back together.)
  2. No problems here today..... just posting to make noise I guess. My, near rust free 1982 Wagon has been sitting in back for years.... not sure how far I will get with budget the way it is but just cleaning seems to be a big boost. Got 5 sp kit from Bratsrus1 today and slowly working on EJ harness... for now... clean and get that stupid 4 speed out.... 2 cans of Wasp spray and alot of spider spray means critter free!
  3. Didn't want to pass up the opportunity to salute those Members in the Arizona area while visiting your state. Thinking of those that I saw at the WCSS (West Coast Subaru Shows) that are held yearly in WA. & OR. and they drove all that way from here!!!!! (Dave is from N.M. I believe... hey Dave) I flew from Washington State to Phoenix last Friday to take my 15 year old daughter to the One Direction (think boy band) concert at arena down town Phoenix last Sunday. This is something she was dieing to do (life or death to a 15 yr. old girl) so I got tickets on the 11th row and off we flew!!! We are staying in Mesa, AZ with family for a few more days and have to say what a cool place this is... Hot in Temp. as we left 65 deg. weather right into the 100+ temps...whew... but with relation here they have been taking my daughter and I to all the local touristy things to do. Also we drove down to Tucson and checked out tourist spots there ie., Titton missile museum, millitary air museum, Monestary etc, also went to lakes N. of Phoenix, didn't realize there were so many lakes! My daughter has seen allot of mix from rich to poverty, cacti to being on a jet for a trip.... her big thrill of course was seeing the boys on stage... (teenagers) I looked in Craigslist for older roo's, hardly any except a 84 Hatch but the posting was deleted before I got around to calling on it so never got a chance to go see it. So just wanted to say "Hi", sorry no opportunities to meet up but I have been wearing my WCSS shirt and keeping an eye out for the older roo's. While driving around I noticed roads that dissapered into the desert and had I been in my older roo I would have snooped but noticed how rugged the hills are and at 107 deg. this area can be dangerous for the ill prepared. The sunsets are so impressive! Always keeping an eye out for your older roo's to give a wave to you! (I swear I saw a Road runner go by while being chased by a Coyote that was wearing rocket shoes printed with ACME on the side!) Regards, Indrid Cold
  4. yearly gathering of Subaru's and people, this year it will be at Port Townsend, WA. If you don't go to it your Brat may find it's way there regardless... they just sense where to go.... You live close, usually bring tent or get hotel room etc..2 nights, show car, mud pit?, food, people, friends and lots of group hugs :-p , The event finds a new spot each year, last year over by Stevens, WA, this year way west for a bit of surf and turf. Nice Brat you have there. Take it to the show, enter it ...
  5. If that is a Manual tranny... sounds like a keeper. You didn't post what he wants $ wise.... Not starting.... an 84 is about 3 or 4 things: coil, distributor ignitor (module), um... cracked wire? fuel pump? Plugged filter.... They are simple to work on once you learn them... if you have patience and a cozy place to work on them.. I have two 84's, love them...... .............what to look for... rust..... if no rust I wouldn't blink at buying it resonably priced and a not running rig is money savings. That's how I like to buy them.. or get them limping... brings the price down. When you have a roo that isn't running you have too look at it as an opportunity to learn... I call it bonding... the more they break down, the more you learn then it seems they go a long, long time with out any problems. Remember they are about 30 year old cars... it will need attention... second with nipper below.. hate to see you toss it into the road... it should be put into the living room and adorned in a shrine!.. just kidding of course..
  6. Welcome,..... pics ??.... "of the Aluminum Falcon".... West Coast Subaru Show-14 is in August (Port Townsend, WA) if you want to show it off....
  7. I chuck a drill bit into the cordless and drill into it.... caution not to slip and put into your hand...
  8. Based on the information given, which is sketchy at best... but posted by "..88GL" I took a stab that he was talking about his 88 GL. I could be wrong but dove in anyway... if it didn't apply to his described issues.. I am sure he is a smart guy would figure that out. I had a similar issue where engine wouldn't hold idle and caused shaking as it tried to adjust for idle on my "Single point fuel injection" 1.8, 88 GL. A well seasoned hand on here gave me this exact advice (pull up on hose, shoot silicone spray into Air Idle valve, put hose back on.)... which I did.. and cured the problem. Just trying to pass along what worked for me. If there are issues to this then it is above me and possibly a solution more fitting to the cure could be displayed by those that have voiced a cautionary concern to the aforementioned suggestion. Being I was given said advice by a respected member on this board, used suggestion and proven to work (I actually continued to do this as a pre-winter maintenance step) I meant no ill will in passing this along. All I am doing is forwarding what worked well for me and by all appearances to be tame on potential causal damaging effects to other engine components. If there are detrimental effects to this... I am unaware of them but it does not mean their could be. It would be nice to hear if "ABawm88Gl" has fixed his rough running? Shaking? bouncing engine?????
  9. .......shoot in spray into idle valve........... "Idle Air control Valve" the I.A.C.
  10. bounce.. do you mean idle is going up and down? Try spraying "silicone spray" into idler valve located on the front of the Throttle body (Carberator). Pull up on the 7/8" hose in front of the throttle body that runs up to air filter and shoot in spray into idle valve... If that is the issue.. this should help... If this has nothing to do with your issue... I fain failure to unfocused details and lack of critical, need to know information.
  11. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_SPM2283533703P?prdNo=13#desc I see the issue.... broken bolt. Try looking at bolt extractors.. read up and see what will work for you. May have to pull engine to get drill/extractor on the bolt????
  12. kill the spark from the coil to distributor, if you crank over after injecting a flammable solution... I had it jet out, hit the dangling plug wire arcing to the block and instant fire! hahahaha...
  13. DL. with the push button.... I believe. Exactly like the wagon I had. These cars are perfect for beginner drivers as they won't get into trouble with Power! Dependable to and from school, work etc.. and you get to learn to tinker... Nice.
  14. Hey Shadman. Here is what your looking for: Use Felpro head gaskets. go +5 ft. lbs. over on last torque value with these gaskets and you don't have to do a re-tourque as specified in Subaru book. Coat the cork valve cover gaskets with the Grey RTV, let dry and then install. I coat and hang from hooks till dry. ***Enjoy bonding with the roo. . . . .
  15. The EA-82's can be a pain in the rump roast till you figure them out. Then not too.... bad? (Things I have learned from site and bonding time with roo, hope this helps) Normally: When engine heads are removed from the car that has been overheated they should be checked by an automotive machinist. They will assure the heads are flat. Normally: Cars should not be run with out fluids in the engine. Nor fluids dumped into a hot, empty engine. Adding into pre-filled radiator as warming up fine. Normally: Starting an engine after a head gaskets will produce a cloud of smoke out the tail pipe for about 15 minutes. When dis-assembling engine I put gloves over the exhaust pipe below engine to prevent fluids from dumping down when heads are pulled and prevent nuts or bolts from dropping in. I have found small casting holes in the heads. Prior to taking apart and engine full of water I put 10 psi of air pressure on the radiator, take the exhaust pipes off and look for leaks from exhaust ports on each head. Using a squirtie bottle with dish soap and water spray around intake manifolds gaskets, small by-pass hose under carberator (under intake) , check heads gaskets etc.. and look for fluid leaks. I use Felpro head gaskets and Subaru Intake gaskets. my .o2
  16. Welcome to the board. Great pics, She just needs some loving and what a great travel story with that.
  17. That's what I thought... but I figured I would ask. I will have him read the codes, correct issues etc..
  18. EA-82 in 1992 wagon. Helping a guy try to clear his codes. he is telling me when the oil pressure goes up (cold start) when it reaches near max the "check engine" light will come on, the oil warms up, gauge lowers and the light goes off... did a little bit of a search on this, nothing solid ... figured someone might know. Ideas?
  19. I had my 84 done professionally. They used hot glue/adhesive although I am not educated enough to say what will or will not work. New front glass are kind of spendy. I have done one (hot glue method) and had professionals do one. The car I did was rear ended/totalled, (had sold it) windshield didn't fly out so I felt good about that. The next one I had a company do it. I enjoyed walking across the street and eating a hamburger while they do it, no leaks.. no issues and the front window is part of the integrity of the car no worries. .02
  20. great idea... just did some head gasket (no issues) and did the hold the breath and pray nothing goes.. clunk. I will try that next time and loose the stress factor. off subject but same, on my 2000 Ford focus where the electrical connectors get brittle on the fuel injectors (under the Intake manifold) I ziptie those electrical connectors to the fuel rails as the clips can fail. I even zip around the spark plug wires on the electronic ignition as they have those cheapy clippy things that suppose to hold them on... zip ties, cheap, effective..
  21. Welcome, Mmmmmm freeeeeeee.... (got two that way, less engines) 100,000 just getting broke in... May need to adjust rocker arms if sounds like a bit of ticking under valve covers...
  22. I actually learned alot about helmets. I you are wearing a hood all day the one to buy is the FiberSteel mfg. Pipeliners hood with the narrow auto darkening, adjustable lense. Usually sold seperatly. the pipe welders say weight is a serious factor if you live in them as they do day after day. For shop work, the heavier units with the big picture window fine as you can tack items up. The welding then is done with a standard hood, lens and weld away. so will go out and see what I can find tomorrow.
  23. Astoria was great, what a great town... long way for the WA-Eastsiders but close compared to AZ etc.. Don't care where, always a good time.
  24. EA-82, been sitting for awhile with bad head gasket (s), not mine and not a mechanic. noted the heads which sat with coolant in them has a bit of an etched surface where it pooled in bottom of head... The guy I am doing this for (old mechanic) said to polish with fine grit and put it back together... so I did. Heads machined. New Felpro gaskets and his car so his call. what is the past experience with this... anyone? Possibly I could have used a cylinder hone on it? This is more of a country rig... so his concern factor is low about any effect I guess but I wanted your input as I always learn from doing and curious what others would do, done with this issue.
