More on oil pressure woes.

Yup. Drove around for about 2hrs last night. It gets down the road alright for an old barn find. -
Cranks and wont start

So I've been having this issue as well. Try hammering on the distributor while some ones cranking. LOL. it seems to work for my Brat. Has a new ignitor and I still have this issue. Maybe I'll replace the distributor. -

Ending oil pressure is 12psi hot idle and 22 psi 2k rpm. Confirmed internal engine wear is the cause of low pressure. Just drive it till it quits -

Yeah, I couldn't find one for sell. Though the operating temp oil pressure was at minimum acceptable spec. I decided to inspect it anyways. Glad I did cause it looked terrible. I'm sure the internal engine clearance is worn as well and oil pressure is never gonna be high. But that pump was about to crap out and seize up. I'd hold on to that pump if I were you. They seem rare now. I'll post new pressure readings tonight. -

Sooo..... pump disassembled it looks like crap. Pump shaft is damaged and housing it done. Had a rough looking engine that came with the Brat. Removed it and it looks great. Even though the engine looks terrible. The pump is top notch. Will report new pressure readings when installed. -

Thanks Bud. It was leaking too. Sounds like a reseal and run it. It did look nasty in the oil pan. So I'm just gonna run it till it doesn't any more. -
So I've decided to rebuild an oil pump on my son's 86'Brat. Oil pressure is 45psi dead cold idle/ and 70psi on cold 2k rpm. Hot idle at 800rpm is 12psi and 20 psi at hot 2k rpm. I would just replace the pump or internals if I could find one. Anyone have any suggestions on parts location. Google has kinda failed me. On a side note the cheap oil pressure sender is correct and the gauge is showing about right. Just kinda low oil pressure. Oh yeah, I pulled the oil pan to replace the gasket and found nasty metal sludge in there. Dang!

Meh, cleaned the contacts and reassembled. Still does the same thing. Not one of the more pressing issues with the vehicle as its charging 14v during operation. And the list of issues is long. I'll come back to it and report a repair when I find it. It's most likely just diode issues. But, not bad enough to fail the diode test on my tester. Moving on to rear brake hardware and fuel level sensor

My son's barn find 86 Brat. Has multiple issues we've been working through. Currently were working on the charging system. The alternator is charging at 14v at idle but the charge warning light burn dim. EGR, brake, charge, and stop lamp. These light go out at near 2k RPM. I'm pulling the alternator out now to check the brushes. Any ideas fellas?

My son's 1st car purchase. Drove 2hrs to pick it up and paid way too much. It's worth it to see him stoked about it. Looks ok on the out side. But, it's a barn find and needs al kind of work. He's learning a lot. -

Sorry, signal wire is - neg on the coil. Its yellow on these. Because it's not points there is no adjusting. Just looking for a change. Oh, and my $27 Amazon ignition module didn't work right out of the box. Imagine that. Just do a quick test on yours. It's real easy. -

Usually you would use a dwell meter to set points. But you can use it to check the electronic ignition. You're not setting anything. Just looking for a signal to the coil. In customer pay situations I couldn't just sell them both coil and igniter. We had to determine the cause. Quick test proves the failure. It's easier and faster to test for dwell than ohm out a coil. As the coils were internal to the distributor. -

Sure thing, today I confirmed a bad ignition control unit with my multi meter. Checking for dwell at the neg - contact of the coil. Multi meter is set for 4 cyl dwell. While the engine would start due to no ignition spark the dwell reading was 0.0 meaning there was no signal to the coil to fire. Meter is connected from yellow wire(red positive) and engine ground (black meter led) with ignition off it'll read about 60°. Not that important. When ignition on it'll drop to zero(power on, no signal) during good start it'll jump up(doesn't matter how far, just means you have signal) with failure the it'll remain at 0.0.(no signal). Found an ignition control unit on Amazon for 27 beans. Woooo! -

Tuen it over and check for dwell at the ignition control. It was really common on Honda's. We delt with that a lot in the 90's. They were called ignitors or ICM's(ignition control modules). This is a little different as when ignitors quit they were straight dead. Coils would commonly cause intermittent issues when hot due to insulation breakdown. You could pull it apart and see the casing. Still learning the EA81's. It been fun and the boy is learning a lot. -

Thanks Step a toe, already ran into another issue. Intermittent spark. Some time won't start. Tested coil at near 2 ohms primary and 9Kohms secondary with no spark. Them it just starts working again. I'm bringing my meter home to test the distributor today. -

Engine back in confirmed flywheel only fits only one way and is same as another original I have. While the engine was out i found all valves adjusted too tight. Most likely The reason it ran like spoob at TDC. Reinstalled engine set distributor by tdc sensor in distributor. Runs normal. Had a couple issues with exhaust studs stripping out among others. Bout to adjust the new Weber. Thanks for all the help fellas -
